This ice box has over 20 hand carved pieces on the two front doors, nice detailed lion head carvings and two large paw feet. All of these carvings were hand made by highly skill woodworkers in the 1890's. The columns on the sides are really nice oak rope carvings that are below each lion head and extends down to the top of each paw foot. Underneath the top ledge are unusual oak trim with heart style carvings on all three sides. The bevelled mirror is in great shape, no chips, scratches or hazeThis ice box is solid oak and has never been painted before. A lot of the ice boxes that you see listed were painted before and when finished, they have a washed out appearance from the paint still present in the grain of the wood. This ice box has a beautiful smooth finish and a rich color to it. You will not be disappointed one bit with this item. They were originally owned by the very rich and are now highly sought after by collectors. This particular ice box was bought from a collector that actually purchased it from me 25 or 30 years ago. This ice box has been refinished long ago but is otherwise all original. It has a beveled glass mirror, raised panels, columns and beautiful claw feet. The original slatted back still reads. And quartersawn oak(see photos) measures 47 in. tall x 31 in. wide x 20 in. deep, has original standard caster ... moremounting holes in bottom of legs(we inserted white resin casters but these are wearing out) Unit is extremely well built with tight seams on all sides; finish appears to be original but has a few faint scattered scratches which could use some professional touch up; most wear is near bottom. Along edges of back and feet. Original manufacturer metal plate embossed with name“CHAUTUAQUA” still attached to center front with brads; top door hardware and hinges on lower storage door appear to be original. Although the latch handle appears different(we have seen a wide variety of hardware on similar units) Top opens backward on twin hinges with stops to reveal a metal removable ice block tray. Which still slides out and seats smoothly along mounting tracks in its upper box unit; interior is lined with insulated lead still in good condition. Ice unit measures 25.5 in. across x 16 in. wide along outer perimeter. Antique Oak Ice Box, Beautiful and Unusual, Made in Wisconsin
This is a great old oak ice box that was made sometime around the turn of the century by Sanitary Refrigerator Co. In Fond du Lac, Wisconsin. I have had it in my living room for more than twenty years, and it really looks very nice. This is oak wood, built up in traditional practices, and there is no modern"wood" paneling made of chip board or anything like that. This is an antique, although originally a working ice box in thedays before mechanical refrigeration. The block of ice went into the top bin through the side loading door. I'd guess this was made between 1895 and 1910, perhaps. The wood is what I often see referred to as"honey oak" in color, a very warm medium oak color. What is great about this ice box is that, not only does it have all of the original nickeled hardware,it has a side-loading door for the ... moreblock of ice- this is not a top-loader. That means that this makes a very attractive piece of furniture which can be put in a living room, den, or kitchen and a lamp and other decorative items can be put on top. This ice box also has the original manufacturer's label.A metal plate. I have not touched the galvanized interior. The interior is as I found it; there is a piece of plywood laid into the bottom compartment(not attached) and there is some shelf paper applied inside. The galvanizing all looks to be in good condition. I have owned this for more than thirty years and paid a very hefty price for it when I bought it given the very unusual character.
