The family said their grandfather used this piece to display and show the rod to help sell them. They did not know the age of the sales sample piece. ANTIQUE MILK WHITE SEMITRANSPARENT GLASS LIGHTENING ROD BALL
I think that the material is glass. But I can't be 100% sure. There are a couple of rust stains on the outside. No cracks or fractures. Some dark specks here and there. The ball has been cleaned. There are some scratches and small gouges. The top and bottom holes have chipped out some. See pictures. This piece came from my parent's old Wisconsin barn which was built in the early 1900s. Here we have a large antique spiral copper Lightening Rod w/ amethyst white glass ball. It is white with a purple hue) The finial is made of bronze or brass. This lightening rod measures approximately 69" tall all together. It is in overall very good condition. Wear consistent with age. The glass ball has wear on the lip on both sides. The balls each measure about 5" from collar to collar. The opening is 1" in diameter. One has one collar that is broken. Both are used and show wear. Up for sale an antique zinc horse weathervane lightening rod with glass ball. This is old-I am not an expert but I believe it is turn of the century era. The horse is zinc.The lightening rod is copper and other parts of the pole appear to be cast iron. This is mounted on a wood frame and stands 56 inches tall, and has 3 legs that support it on the wooden base(or for mounting) The horse measures 9 by 7 1/2 inches,the glass ball is 5 inches round,the vertical part with the arrow is 21 inches across,the wooden base it sits on is 20 1/2 inches by 7 1/4 inches and 1 1/2 inches high. The horse has been braised and there is some touch up paint on it,the glass ball has been cleaned on the outside but not the inside, there are rubber bands around the inner rims of the glass ball which was as found. Where they belong on the top of a house! Dates to around the late 1800's, it was the pure sculptural and decorative aspect that I liked when I spotted it. Worn to a beautiful old French grey in colour this would look fantastic fixed onto some type of pediment and used as a purely decorative interior piece. It looks like lightening has struck it before going by the tiny hole to one side, there is also a small fracture to the opposite side and there are waves and ripples throughout- all expected having been pinned to the top of house in all weathers for some 150 years. Included in this auction are two Kretzer lightening rod insulators and one Kretzer rod or cable base. One wooden replacement insulator and 10 rod or cable brass connector parts and two original Zinc caps. We dont know much more about them than that and one of the insulators has a broken bottom but is still usable. The other one has a very minor chip. The rest are in good shape.
