Fantastic piece of circa 1880's roof cresting/ lightning arrester. Beautiful Gothic stylized botanicals in heavy cast iron. Old black paint with light surface rust. The iron is in great condition with no eroded/ rusted-through parts. The last 8" on the right in the first photo is the start of another section and is held together by screws/nuts through the original mounting plates. Mounted on an old. Weathered board for display. Cresting is tough to come by, as most was taken off the roofs many years ago do to mechanical and roof issues. The finial at the end is superb. Dec.1.91. 1(which from my research would be the Victorian era near the turn of the century c1891) These estate sale finds are extremely hard to come by and from what I have gathered rather rare and collectible. ANTIQUE VICTORIAN ORNAMENTAL ARCHITECTURAL CAST IRON ROOF CRESTING WIDOWS WALK
Please scroll down under this description for 27 additional views. 19th century ornamental cast iron roof cresting sections salvaged from a Victorian house. This is the lacy details that Italianate and other Victorian houses had running along the peaks of the roof and around towers and turrets. There are 10 pieces in all. Three small fragments and seven pieces that are more substantial. The height at the highest points is 12" The legs at the bottom have a forked foot which is how they were attached along the roof. No piece is longer than about 12" but you will see in the photos that we were able to piece them together like a puzzle to create longer sections. They have an encrusted surface with rust but what we have seems sturdy enough for re-use as something other than their original intent. A line of them would look great along ... morethe top of a headboard made from an antique door. They can be applied with masonry screws to the top of a brick wall. They can be dramatically arranged on a mantel or hung on a wall. Pair Antique cast Iron Roof Cresting Finials Architectural Elements Victorian
Each of these nicely cast baroque-inspired elements measures 15 ½” tall x 9 ¾” wide and have 1 ¾” round bases that have threaded holes. The backs have cast mounts for tying them into a brace for stability and they retain old black finish. I would guess them to be late 1800s roof elements.
