Up for sale: Beautiful newel post. Measures 55 inches high and 9 inches at widest point. It is 6 inches at the narrowest point. The finial is 6 inches high. A lot of work went into building this one. Salvaged from large house built at the turn of century. Quite sound. Does have some wear from a century of use. P art of it looks to have been panted many deca des ago. One of the nicer newels we have found. Quite majestic. And quite heavy. Shipping quote is for Federal Express. We can also ship for about $49 through Greyhound if you have a terminal nearby. From our experience it takes about a week to get to your terminal. They call you and give you 2 or 3 days to come and pick up. They charge a small fee for storage after that. Up for auction are four architectural& gardening building or fencing finials recently found at auction in the suburban Philadelphia. PA area. They are all found in good used condition. One side is opened, as seen in photo#4. The other side is closed, as seen in photo#3. I think they would make great towel racks, or any other repurposing projects you have in mind. They have remnants of the original paint as well and measures approximately 7 3/4" x 1 1/2" x 3" in size. Quite primitive and very decorative as late 19th early 20th Century cast iron pieces. cast iron Finial from the Connecticut State Capitol building. A very rare piece of history- removed from the Connecticut state capitol in the late 1970's early 1980's during a major renovation of the 1879 gothic victorian grand building constructed in Bushnell Park(formerly Trinity college property) Prior to the construction of this building- Connecticut had two state capitals: one in New Haven. One in Hartford- after centuries of the state government alternating it's location yearly- a legislative act was passed locating the seat of state government in Hartford(of course the citizens of Hartford sweetened the pot with a $500,000 gift towards the construction of a new building! A site was chosen and paid for by the state- 6 years of construction overruns. And finally in 1879 a brand new $3.2 million dollar building was opened- ... morethe building was one of the top ten architectural wonders of it's period. A century of wear and tear caught up with the building in the 1970's and luckily the leaders of the time thought better than to tear it down- instead they spent close to $20 million to refurbish the building. This cresting- original to the building was made by Taylor& Fenn in East Windsor. CT- and recast in the early 1980's(by the same company! for the replacement iron was put back on the roof! provenance can be provided in a book commissioned by the Old State House association! Scads of great stuff all organized on shelves and tables. Sunlight filtering through the third story loft, cars covered with cloth, the place is like a movie set. John's Scottish Da was a machinist. And he was a really good one. Way back before it was all done by puter. He ... moreworked as a foreman at a big factory, and in his spare time he made nice little things to use around the house. There are lots of bits and pieces of his work in the workshop drawers. He made these little galleons to use as blind pull toggles. Pretty cool huh? We managed to weasel some of them out of the workshop. The price listed is per unit. And we have a few available.
