This is a wonderful vintage weathervane of a sulky with rider. Trotting horse. It is all copper and brass with great original patina. This F o lk Art weather vane dates to the 19th century. Copper forms are soldered together and the figures are hollow. This is a very large piece. The measurements are 31"W x 16.5"H. One wheel is missing a spoke and two spokes are loose on one end. I can see no other areas that need repair. This has been in a private collection for over 20 years. I do not know the original area that it came from. We had it appraised 10 years ago And the value was $10.000. Antique Vintage Old Large Copper & Brass Weathervane Running Horse Weathervane
This is a beautiful old weathervane. The horse. Directional arrows, and decorative balls appear to be copper. The 3 demensional items are hollow. The horizontal bar under the horse appears to be some other material possibly brass. The verticle rod(black) seems to be steel or iron. I do not know the age, I aquired it at auction in the 80's and thought to add it to a cupola on the barn. This many years later it's still in the garage. This is a very large item and will come disassembled. I'm not sure that I have it assembled correctly but it seems to work. Overall assembled demensions are appx. 45" tall and 31" wide. The Horse is almost 28" wide nose to tail and appx. 13 1/2" tall. There are two decorative balls. The form is that of a pair of work horses pulling a plow and guided by a man/farmer. The reins are made of early twined wires. The plow. Horses, and farmer are riveted on an arrow. The vane is in a fabulous old black paint, with traces of a silver paint over it in some areas. There is no rod, so this would be displayed as a wall mount, unless you want to attach a rod to it in order to use it on a building. There are eight bullet holes in the horses, and one in the farmer, so this was obviously used for target practice when it was on the barn. The condition is very good, with just minimal paint loss. Large Antique Copper Horse Weathervane Running Race Cast Metal Zinc Weather Vane
This is a really nice antique copper running horse weathervane with a solid cast metal( lead/zinc)head. Fine Patina is evidence of years in the weather. No idea of age. This beautiful piece was taken from a barn roof in PA. Found at a local estate. The man having the sale said as a boy his family bought a farm and this horse weather vane was on the barn. He said they lived there for 20 years and when they moved his father took it with them. The horse does not appear to have been cleaned or polished and shows the work of nature. I did wipe it down. The horse's head is made of zinc/lead I'm told and the body is hand formed from heavy copper and hot lead soldered together into this fine looking horse. The piece is 17" from top of the ear to the top of the pipe, The pipe is 33" long and weighs over 8 pounds. Nice detail in proper ... morehorse anatomy with muscles and veins showing. Head, eyes and mouth are so realistic. This piece is as good as I have seen and in marvelous condition with no cracks, dents or other distractions. IT LOOKS GREAT mounted on a wall. The piece has wonderful, artistic lines- it's 28" long from the tip of the arrow to the end; the height is 12" from the tip of the horse's ears to the bottom of the arrow; and the horse itself is 13" long, but would be 2" or so longer if his front leg were still attached to the metal mounting. It will need to be reattached to the pole. I do not know what the head is made from but it looks like brass(just not positive) and I do not know how old it is but it looks very old. For the age and use it's in Very Good Condition; it has a variegated verdigris and rust patination which to me looks phenomenal. The head is rusty but solid, and there appear to be several filled holes here and there. Under the head the seam is split somewhat but that could be repaired. Of course there are dents, dings, and so forth, but nothing I would rate as being negative. I have up for sale a very nice vintage original circa late 1800s to early 1900s American Folk Art Sheet Metal Cut Out Silhouette HORSE WEATHERVANE. It is Fresh off the Farm. Picked out of an old granary. It measures approx 31" long, approx 26" tall and is made of two cut out and riveted together pieces of sheet metal. The vane is fully guaranteed as being authentic. Dating from somewhere approx. 1900 give or take. It was purchased off of an old family farm here in Wisconsin, I've been trying to by it for over 20 years. Really Nicely Done. Unknown maker probably done by a local tinsmith back in the day. I think that its a fantastic looking item. Perfect for a wall décor or to have a stand made with a rod for proper display. For sale I have the most Spectacular Horse Weather Vane I have ever seen! This piece was manufactured by Cushing& White. Waltham, Mass. in or around 1863. This is the famous trotting horse Dexter. This fabulous piece stands a whopping 9 feet tall on it's mounting bracket and the horse is 41"long. The horse, the ball, and the spearhead at the top of the Weather Vane still maintain about 90% of the original gold guild paint. Because of the size and weight of the horse, the head is made out of cast iron to balance it while on the roof. This exquisitely detailed small horse weather vane has all the attributes of the larger size. Only in smaller, tabletop size. Very heavy. I suspect it is copper as a magnetic strip does not stick to the horse, just the support stick and directionals. The horse– or essence of a horse headed south“ the only direction that matters this time of year! measures approximately 14.5” tall from table by approximately 11” from nose to tip of right hoof. I think the tail may have always been“bobbed” But I can’t say for sure. Letters and front hoof tip are missing, but still a very strong classic presentation. The people had moved here from a farm that had been in their family for generations in Maine. This came from the families barn. There are 2 bullet holes in the horse. Antique Appaloosa Horse-Arrow Weathervane-Cast Aluminum 26.5" Tall-1-Bullet Hole
Antique Appaloosa Horse Weathervane Up for consideration is a tall. Over 26" old, all aluminum, weathervane, featuring an Appaloosa horse on a the arrow directional. The arrow tail is complete with one bullet hole through the lower half of the feather portion of the arrow. The metal is all pretty straight, but not perfectly straight. All of the vane has been recently painted, with the exception of the arrow. The base has a screw like bottom. The arrow is 21 1/4"long, the horse being 6 1/8" tall and 7 1/2" long, and the directionals are 13 3/8" long, with the letters being 2 9/16- 2 5/8" in height. It weighs about 1 lb. and 4 oz. DESCRIPTION: Here is an old weathervane that started life on a roof somewhere but is now ready to be mounted to enjoy indoors as a piece of art. AGE: This is an old item which I am guessing was made anywhere from the 1820's to the 1920's? But there is really no way to say for certain. But I can say that this is a genuine weathervane that was used, and not an aged replica made to fool. DIMENSIONS: The weathervane is 23.25” long X 12.5” tall. ... moreMATERIALS: This vane is made of sheet metal and then braced with heavy iron riveted supports to keep it rigid. ORIGINALITY: This item is untouched and just as I got it. I believe that the old black paint is a second coat of black. And it is likely that the mounting shaft was re-attached or fixed at some point long ago. CONDITION: As you can see in the photos. The weathervane has wear, tear, dents, scratches, bullet holes, and paint loss. The mounting post is corroded as seen in the close-up photos. ABOUT THE BASE: I used a section of an old rope bed rail to hold the weathervane during photography. I basically jammed the post into the hole. Because it is in the photos. It has a beautiful aged patina with much of the original gold wash finish intact. It is molded tin construction and measures 14 ½” long and 10 ½” tall. The seam is in excellent condition with no separations. There are no bullet holes. It is a true survivor! I have shown as much in pictures as possible. Here we have a beautiful antique copper horse weather vane from days gone by. Still in beautiful shape with only a few slight dings. I have no tried to clean this at all.I will leave that to the new owner to clean as they best see fit. Came off an old barn to the new England area. Measures 30 1/2 inches long and 16 inches high.
