I have up for sale a very nice vintage original circa late 1800s to early 1900s American Folk Art Sheet Metal Cut Out Silhouette HORSE WEATHERVANE. It is Fresh off the Farm. Picked out of an old granary. It measures approx 31" long, approx 26" tall and is made of two cut out and riveted together pieces of sheet metal. The vane is fully guaranteed as being authentic. Dating from somewhere approx. 1900 give or take. It was purchased off of an old family farm here in Wisconsin, I've been trying to by it for over 20 years. Really Nicely Done. Unknown maker probably done by a local tinsmith back in the day. I think that its a fantastic looking item. Perfect for a wall décor or to have a stand made with a rod for proper display. It is in Very Nice Original As Found Condition. Comes with the old bird poop and everything. All I ... moredid was dust it off. It was painted a grayish color and is caked with dirt. Bird poop, and who knows what else. It is riveted together and has an attachment section on the back so that it could sit on a metal rod for spinning. I will also be selling a HORSE WEATHERVANE. Primitive Vintage Cast Metal Prancing Horse Weathervane Shabby Black Finish I had an opportunity to go down state Illinois recently for the homecoming of my Alma Mater and shopped the wonderful sales. Barn sales and antique shops along the way. I have a huge variety of oldees for you this week- from 19th century primitives to 1950s kitsch- there’s something for everyone! Here's a wonderful older vintage cast metal weathervane in the image of a pancing horse! It's made from a metal that a magnet does not stick to- spelter. I'm guessing, as it appears to be silver in color. The pieces has a hammered metal look on the arrow. You can see lots of peeks of the metal as the old black finish is shabby, chippy and worn- especially on the horse, where you can see more metal than paint. This is the top to a weathervane- it would have attached ... moreonto a pole at one point in time, with a directional underneath- I do not have those, so what you see is what you get. That being said, as it is, it could made for some very cool wall art if mounted on a wall- the possibilities are limited to your imagination. Measuring 33" long, it is 15 3/4" tall from the bottom of the(pole insert) to the top of the horse's ears. The hole at the base where it would mount is 7/8" measuring on the inside walls, with an interior(pole) hole of about 3/8. It weighs 3 3/4 lbs. and is in excellent solid and sturdy condition. Aside from the wear to the finish, no issues at all. It's reallyreallyreally barn fresh dirty and cob-webby and needs a good cleaning- I have not cleaned in any way. Another fabulous farm find! This weather-vane is in good condition. The arrow measures 30" long. The horse measures 14 1/2" long from hoof to hoof. My magnet is not attracted to anything on this weather vane. I tend to think that it was made of aluminum but maybe copper.It sounds like weights have been added to the arrow to balance things out.

I've shown a picture of my great grandfather on his farm in 1922 in the photo description of this piece. While the photo doesn't show the weathervane in this particular shot, I am fairly certain that this piece lived the first part of it's life at this location, most likely went to my great uncle's home in the same area, and then made it's way down to Long Island, NY to my grandfather's home. It's a great old piece- I'm not sure what type of metal the casting is. ... moreBut it appears to be silver in color. There is no rust or dents, but the paint is flaking on the horse and the directional. It's just a perfect piece for any outbuilding and with a little elbow grease and creativity it could be a beautiful decorative item for display indoors. The horse measures 9" from the tip of its ear to the front hoof. 8" from the top of the rump to the back hoof, and 10 1/4" from nose to tail. The arrow measures 23 1/2" in length. The rod piece of the directional is 22" tall and 16" from letter to letter. These measurements are approximate. Some assembly is required- the directional separates into three pieces. And we separated the pieces to make it easier to ship. The pieces simply screw together(screws are on the"N- E" and the"S- W" the"letters" slide over the rod and are tightened) This item is used and I always try to describe and photograph the items I present for sale as accurately as possible. Scarce Antique Lightning Rod Weathervane With Indexed or Prancing Horse.
Early 20th c. pretty scarce larger form of this indexed or prancing horse on a lightning rod arrow. It is zinc with old gold flaking paint. It's not crushed or shot up and I don't see any seam separations either. Very good condition. Maybe the slightest dent in one spot? Worn gold paint with a couple of tiny paint drips on it. For your consideration is a VINTAGE PRANCING OR TROTTING HORSE WEATHERVANE WITH ARROW MOUNTING BASE and maker's mark. The weathervane measures 17.5" at its widest point which is the length of the arrow and 21.5" from top to bottom. The HORSE is 9.5" long and 7" tall. The weathervane has a little paint missing and general wear commensurate with age and usage. A great piece of Americana Folk Art. Please see the pictures as they are part of the description.
