This is a wonderful vintage weathervane of a sulky with rider. Trotting horse. It is all copper and brass with great original patina. This F o lk Art weather vane dates to the 19th century. Copper forms are soldered together and the figures are hollow. This is a very large piece. The measurements are 31"W x 16.5"H. One wheel is missing a spoke and two spokes are loose on one end. I can see no other areas that need repair. This has been in a private collection for over 20 years. I do not know the original area that it came from. We had it appraised 10 years ago And the value was $10.000. I also have a magazine clipping where it shows this weather vane brought $10,450 at a Munda and Associates sale in Freeport Illinois December 15 of 2002. See photograph. 19th Century American Copper Running Horse & Sulky Weathervane & Directionals
19th Century American Full Body Copper and Metal Running Horse and Sulky Weathervane ca. 1880-90 with Directionals. The rider and horse have great form. The weathervane has great patina- nice verdigris color. SIZE: Horse and Sulky are 30 inches long x 14 inches high x 6 1/2 inches wide. Directional is 40 inches high x 23 inches wide. CONDITION: The weathervane has natural wear from age and exposure. The horse has a hole in its knee for placement on the directional. A few of the spoke wheels are slightly bent on the sulky. On one side. Two wheel spokes are separated from the round wheel. There are some dents and dings overall. Directional- the top ball has dents, and the bottom smaller ball has a couple small dents. The pole is slightly bent near the directionals. Great piece of old Folk Art. This item will be shipped in two boxes.

Looking around ebay I'd say it's likely not an antique but it is very well built and hand-crafted from formed copper soldered together with brass tubing for the structural support elements. It has been stored indoors so it's starting to get a nice patina but has not yet developed full verdigris. All soldered joints are solid. You'll notice that one of the wheels is bent in slightly and the front leg of the horse is slightly tweaked. Both could be easily bent back to shape if you so desire. This antique work of art. Horse& sulky with rider, copper with patina/and brass/cast iron,zinc? weather vane. I was told it was made in the 1800's it was on an old barn that was built in the 1800's so it most likely was the original weather vane put there when it was built. I love this beautiful piece of Americana folk art. The horses ears are missing,it needs some minor fixes,some parts need welded,there is a crack in the base& the end piece of the base is missing but it still is usable, in all its in great shape for its age and the fact that it was in use until recently. The most important parts still exist. It measures 33" long 14" high to the top of the riders head.It is a true vintage work of art! Natural wear and imperfections just add more character! It is in good antique condition.however the horse is missing the ears and I did take a photo of it for you to see. There are a few little dings and dents which has to the age of the weathervane.again there are photos of these. The weathervane measures approximately 14" tall at the highest point which is the wheel base to the top of driver. The length being measures by the pole on the bottom is 30.5" long and it has a width of 8" across the wheel base.these are approximate measurements. Vintage Horse Sulky Copper Weathervane with Brass Directionals
This weather vane came from a farm in Illinois. I'm not sure how old it is. It has brass directionals included. There is a slight separation at the horse's tail and a break at one of the wheels(see pictures) The horse has a lot of details that most weather vanes like this don't have. The ears are original and are usually broken off from wear(see picture) The weather vane measures 31 x 16 inches. The directionals measure 18 x 18 inches. Vintage Antique COPPER HORSE & SULKY w/RIDER WEATHER VANE Weathervane
Antique or vintage weathervane that I believe is an earlier version of this type. The soldered seams are on the crude side with lots of tarnish and patina. I'll keep my age estimate pretty wide to be safe and say early 20th century to the depression. There is some oxidation also. The driver seams to have the most. From the front pipe to the back of the wheel is about 32" Several non distracting type dents that are normal for this age but the wheels are pretty bent. They do bend easy to fix. Off hand I see 4 spots where this piece needs to be spot soldered, it's only attached at the vertical bar. The bottom of one wheel to the pipe, the end of one spoke(I did that bending the wheels) and the 2 rear feet get soldered to the pipe. You can see where both feet where attached. Weathervane of Sulky Driver/Running Horse c. 1870 Blue Patina, Copper/Zinc
This is a wonderful antique copper and zinc weathervane that was probably designed from one of Cushing's renditions of a Sulky. Driver, and Horse in Courier and Ives as far back as c.1870. The horse is very similar to the then popular Japanese Racehorse, Blackhawk. This weathervane went to the Antiques Roadshow in June of 2010 in Billings, MT. It was authenticated by the Keno brothers and Michael as being at least as old as 1870, made up of copper and zinc, and is in very good to excellent condition. The weathervane is mounted at one point on a 31" long copper tube under the horse(as pictured) With an opening underneath with which to mount directionals, etc. The height of the vane is 17.5 inches at it's highest point and approx. 10 inches at its widest point. The patina is more oxidized on one side, giving it the bluish color ... moreof that of oxidized copper. The other side is more a darkened brownish color. The very fine reins are still intact. There are dents on one side, where possibly the vane was used for target practice. Please note that under the right ear of the horse, one can see a fold and the copper showing through the patina. This does not detract from this great piece. There are no identifying marks present or a signature. As was often the case for weathervanes. Antique Sulky Copper and Zinc Racing Cart/ Horse and Jockey- Weathervane
This came out of an old estate here in Boulder a few weeks ago. I don't see many of these items here. But every now and then they come up. This weathervane is copper, app. 32" long and 16" tall and the directionals are long gone. I've shown this to a few dealers, one says 1930's, the other said 1900. I'm not sure, I do know it is good, and honest. I took a lot a photos, not blurry ones that make you think something is not honest about it. It's a good piece. Well packed.

After doing some research I believe the horse depicted in the sculpture is Ethan-Allen. A famous racer from the 1850' 60's. The only part missing is the front arrow, but I have never seen one. For sale is an Antique Weather Vane from early 20th Century or Late 19th Century 1900s/ 1800s. It is a Ethan Allen Sulky Horse with Racing Buggy and Rider/ Jockey and comes with Directions North. South, East and West and has Mounting Bracket/ Base which is harder to find. Materials range from Copper, Brass and Cast Iron. This piece has great Patina and would top off any building or maybe even your garden. Just the top piece has sold for $950 on here. I would say it is in great shape for age the worst being it is a little loose on base where it connects to stand and needs to be reinforced. Use pics for item and condition. This is a vintage Horse and Sulky with Rider Copper Weathervane. The rear leg of the horse has come loose from the bottom cross post but is very repairable. The driver left reign needs to resoldered and one spoke on the left wheel has been cracked. all repairable. The driver sit slightly to the left of center when viewed from the front. it is in good condition with no major issues. All can be seen in the pictures provided It measures 33" x 15" I purchased this at an estate sale where the owner past away after living in her house nearly 30 years. This is a wonderful vintage weathervane of a sulky with harness rider and trotting horse. It is copper metals with rider's head made of bronze and/or brass. It has a great original patina. This folk art weathervane dates to the 1880s. No makers marks. Made from copper forms and soldered ... moretogether the figures are hollow. This is one piece and has no directionals. The horse's face is copper molded. Ears are tight and forward pointing. This piece has a wonderful natural patina. The verdigris is from years of weathering. The piece has been restored as follows: each sulky wheel was mended using a short copper tubing and a spot of solder; as well. One spoke in each wheel was restored using copper.
