Structure/Composition: Made of a non-ferrous metal with chrome plating. A magnet does NOT stick to the base or to the tines. Four tines are brass with chrome plating. All four(4) screw into the base. Has a screw for affixing to the top of a pole. Wear-and-Tear: In well-used condition. The chro me has a patina of city grime. But the scratches are very little. The age is late 1800's to early 1900's; ... morethe building it was removed from was built around the turn of the last century. The lock screw on the base is a flat-head slotted screw. Not Phillips. Yes. It is damaged(i.e. it is used, not new) but the damage is just wear-and-tear from being on a roof for decades. The chrome is nicked in places. A magnet does not stick to the four tips. But it does to the screw in the rod's base. The metal on the tips is scared from being screwed in and you can see a gold-colored metal(brass? underneath. There are many micro-scratches on the base and tips. Too many to be pointed out individually. Here is an old weather vane and or lightning rod arrow topper. It measures 11 1/2 inches long from end to end then the end on its base that would set down into a weathervane or lightning rods shaft measures 1 1/2 inches long by 1/2 of an inch across its center. 3 Copper Twist Lightning Rod Weathervane Pennsylvania Barn Acorn 5 Spike Topper
Fresh from the roof of an early Pennsylvania barn. That has collapsed under the weight of this winter's snow, are the three lightning rods with weathervane. They are made of copper, brass, and iron, with porcelain insulators(one insulator is missing, one is broken) The lightning rods stand approx. 6' tall, and the weathervane arrow is 32" long(animal piece is missing) The twisted center pieces look to be copper-covered iron(some copper is peeling/damaged, see photos) topped with what I believe are solid brass acorn pieces, and the five spikes look to be copper(one has a few bent spikes from the collapse) The glass/ceramic balls are missing, but the ring-caps are still present(lots of balls available here on eBay) The three-legged iron mounting brackets are fair for their age; rusty and pitted, all mounting feet and insulator ... morebrackets are present. One clip/clamp at the base of center rod, where cable would connect, is broken(middle of last photo) These three rods have gone through many rough years atop that barn.fortunately they still exist and can be restored or displayed as is. It came off of a barn that was built in the late 1800's. It is on a a piece of a twisted rod. It originally had two glass balls on it when I purchased it as shown in the last picture but the balls are no longer available. I have up for auction this awesome guaranteed old lightning rod that was from an old farm estate. I actually found three of them total which I have all of them on ebay right now. I can combine shipping if you are interested. This pieces is made of copper. The cable clamp even states Thompson on it. The rod itself is a very cool ornate decorative design to it. It has great old patina to the metal! The piece is easy to mount if wanting to use again. The spike just itself measures 14 1/2" tall and then the base/flat copper attachment is attached to it.
