There is a bracket that mounts to the roof peak(or whatever you wish) that a solid metal black pipe then slides into and is held in place by two screws. The copper finial then slides onto that pole. The spire looks to be mostly copper with a brass tube section at the base. The copper feels heavy and not thin or cheaply made. This auction is for the one spire. Antique Soldered Tin Folk Art Cupola Finial Architectural Roof Garden Ornament
This auction is for an antique soldered Galvanized TIN CUPOLA with a great oxidized patina. This Cupola is in excellent structural condition. It is fabricated by an unusual kind of corrugated zinc coated tin(steel) sheet metal similar to the texture of corduroy. The rust oxidation is mostly on the exterior surface and the metal is still solid with its original thickness(not rusted through or badly corroded) It appears that this piece was never painted and the original galvanized zinc cladding has been eroded by the elements. The result is a great antique rust patina which tells the true age of this piece. The dimensions are 22" tall and 15" square( at widest part) The original galvanized zinc remains mostly intact on the interior. There is some roofing tar residue on one side. Brass Lightning rod Flaming Ball Finial. Large. It is roughly 13 x 8 x 8" and weighs 7 lbs 3.8oz. The diameter of the pipe fitting is 1.5" and it has 3 holes to run a screw threw( one of the holes has a broken screw in it i would think you could drill/tap it out) I found this at a local auction and was told that it was Lightning rod toper that came from New Orleans. Antique Lightning Rod Cast Iron Roof Cresting Finial Gothic Victorian 1880's
Fantastic piece of circa 1880's roof cresting/ lightning arrester. Beautiful Gothic stylized botanicals in heavy cast iron. Old black paint with light surface rust. The iron is in great condition with no eroded/ rusted-through parts. The last 8" on the right in the first photo is the start of another section and is held together by screws/nuts through the original mounting plates. Mounted on an old. Weathered board for display. Cresting is tough to come by, as most was taken off the roofs many years ago do to mechanical and roof issues. The finial at the end is superb.
