As practiced by architects, artists, and designers for a hundred years, presents itself as a system of order and grid, and not merely as adornment. Long before the recently occurring renaissance of the ornament, the Studio of Claudia and Thomas Weil developed 1,000 contemporary ornaments in 14 groups including numerous variations with intriguing names like"the extended octopus, angle-square-triangle, Chessband, Shark's landing, and"Africa, half past two. PERIOD INVENTORIES, CONTENTS, DECORATIONS of GREAT 18th CENTURY ENGLISH HOUSES
Noble Households. Eighteenth-Century Inventories of Great English Houses. A Tribute to John Cornforth” Edited by Tessa Murdoch. Published in Cambridge by John Adamson in 2006. description continues below the picture- DISCUSSION: Inventories of nine great country houses and four London town houses were chosen for this book by the late John Cornforth. The historian. They document the taste and lifestyle of leading grandees and the households that supported them, and record in astonishing detail and with great immediacy the goods and chattels accumulated, inherited, or acquired for everyday use or enjoyment. Compiled swiftly on the spot, room by room, with meticulous care, they were written by professional appraisers, in consultation with family members or their stewards. The language is startlingly modern. One house was equipped with a‘washing ... moremachine’ another refers to the latrine as‘the boghouse’ Kitchen utensils with French names reflect the presence of a French chef and the adoption of French cooking methods. For today’s fascination with the history of food and life below stairs, the contents of the kitchen and scullery assume as much interest as the grand rooms of entertainment. The equipment required to service the household, for cleaning, medical treatment, brewing, baking and distilling reflects the community of stewards, housekeepers and cooks that worked there. Above stairs these inventories record the collecting habits of leading eighteenth-century patrons and provide an opportunity to compare the arrangements of the interiors of the great town and country houses of the same noble families in different generations. A general introduction and short essays on each group of inventories set the households in their historical context. Illustrated with contemporary engravings of the houses and with portraits of the owners of the time, the inventories will appeal to country-house visitors, historians of interiors, patronage and collecting as well as to scholars, curators, collectors, creative desig

Into this world came the ready build ... morehome industry. Offering folks affordable housing they could purchase “ready cut” so that assembly as something they could see as a possibility to do themselves or with the help of their friends and family and neighbors. What could be more wonderful after a time of disaster and uncertainty than to have your own new fresh home to start a future in? From Stickley to Aladdin Homes. Everyone tried hard to out do the other fella in terms of quality, value, interesting designs, innovations in assembly and logistics, and marketing. This 1918 catalog from Aladin Homes is filled with a diversity of home plans and photographs sufficient to give even the most uninspired amongst us. Either prospective homebuilder or architect, a surplus of ideas and possibilities to use, either directly or in new designs. One of the interesting things we have found looking at these catalogs. Home plans and pictures, is that the presence of the combination of a plan and picture in a book with such diversity of plans gives a kind of a comparison of features and faults that is very illustrative of the individual design components and their values or risks. OLD ENGLISH GARDENS IN ANTIQUE PAINTINGS & PRINTS Elizabethan Georgian Victorian
The Artist& the Garden” By Roy Strong. Published by the Yale University Press for the Paul Mellon Centre for Studies in British Art in 2000. description continues below the picture- DISCUSSION: This extraordinarily beautiful book gathers together and examines for the first time a delightful collection of English gardens rendered by artists from 1540 to the early nineteenth century. Many of which are unknown. Sir Roy Strong, widely recognized for his expertise in both art history and garden history, surveys garden pictures ranging from Elizabethan miniatures to eighteenth-century alfresco conversation pieces, from suites of paintings of a single garden to amateur watercolors. He inquires into the origin of the English garden picture genre, its development prior to the invention of photography, its greatest exponents, its reliability as ... morehistorical evidence of actual gardens, and its place within the larger European tradition of picturing the garden. The English, Strong observes, were slow in picturing the reality of their gardens. Until well into the Stuart age, the garden in art served as a symbol, and only gradually did this give way to the impulse to record the facts of contemporary garden-making. In the backgrounds of portraits of Jacobean and Caroline garden owners, the garden is no longer an emblem; it becomes instead a document demonstrating the owners’ pride in their gardens made in the new Renaissance manner. By the Georgian age the garden has moved from the back to the foreground of pictures, and whole families place themselves amid the glory of their self-fashioned landscapes. Both house and garden at this point assume a separate identity, each calling for an individual record. And by the nineteenth century, the author shows, the garden detaches itself from owner and house to be recorded for its own sake, as a single image at first, and later in a series. With some 350 fully annotated illustrations, this lovely book offers a unique record of three hundred years of English gardens and what they
DUTCH COLONIAL HOUSES & INTERIORS IN AMERICA- HUDSON RIVER VALLEY, NEW JERSEY &c
Dutch Colonial Homes in America” By Roderic H. Blackburn. Published in New York by Rizzoli in 2002. description continues below the picture- DISCUSSION: This lavishly-illustrated volume provides an unprecedented look at twenty-eight houses(plus eleven barns and other structures) built in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries by Dutch colonists in the north-eastern United States. Primarily in upstate New York and along the Hudson River Valley, on Long Island and Staten Island, and in New Jersey. An authoritative work- written by eminent experts in the field- Dutch Colonial Homes in America explores the homes in their broader social context by focusing on the historical and religious forces of the times. This book is the first to investigate the meaning of the home and its aesthetics for the Dutch in America, and also the first to look at ... morethese homes as a form of art and craft and, importantly, the influence this form and these people had on the shape of the American house to come. The 200 spectacular new color photographs here are beautifully styled in a manner that recalls the paintings of Vermeer and evoke what might have been the ambiance of these homes hundreds of years ago” DESCRIPTION: Hardcover. 9”x11.5” 240 pages, color illustrations, dust jacket. American Cottage Homes Victorian Architecture house floor plans catalogue onCD
Item Description This Ebay listing is for the sale of a CD ROM publication of a Victorian era catalogue of cottage home plans. originally published in 1878. CD Title: American Cottage Homes. 1878. You can read the detailed content pages further down this page. Sample images from this CD This house plans catalogue was originally published in 1878 by Palliser. 99 pages 40 Plates/ Plans for Homes and Cottages of exceptional nature. These range from very modest cottages to multi-story estate homes to urban multi-townhouse structures. All of classic functional design showing plans and elevations and sketch for each structure so we can visualize the design well and understand how the design conveys function and style both- clearly. What one can not help but feel in viewing these homes. With only modest reflection, is that these are homes most of ... moreus would be delighted to own and live it. They are designed to be comfortable. Efficient, highly functional homes. Style and beauty are often best defined by appreciation of what we as human beings need for comfort and fit. And these structures do wonderful jobs of accommodating for real human needs. Rather than pandering to the often very artificial ideas that much of modern architecture all too often has as a basis. Whether you are a historian. Architect, faculty member, or simply want some plans and designs that are functional and beautiful to build. This is a great tome. The brief preface wastes little of our time and we start immediately into seeing plans and designs in this book. This tome ends. As did many of the books of the time with many pages of advertising for products of the era- so great ephemera and a time capsule of advertising and products for these past times. A good but slightly curious contract and building specifications sample is included at the back of the book as well. Excerpt: Plate 1. Represents the title-pages of this work. Which it has been deemed best to make a useful plate, by showing the perspective views of designs 1, 2, 3, and 23, these desi

American Decorative Wall Painting 1700-1850” By Nina Fletcher Little. Published in New York by E.P. Dutton in 1989. Enlarged edition. description continues below the picture- DISCUSSION: This remains the standard reference work on the subject. And represented quite an exhaustive effort on the author's part. As Marshall Davidson points out in the Foreword to the first edition, most of us have gathered, after reading too much Hawthorne, that our Puritan ancestors lived in a brown and gray world; as Mrs. Little shows, this was absolutely not the case. The text is copiously footnoted, and there is a long bibliography of related materials. An important study of American architecture, decoration, and folk art. ANTIQUE AMERICAN STONE HOUSES of PENNSYLVANIA BUCKS COUNTY & BRANDYWINE VALLEY
Stone Houses. Traditional Homes of Pennsylvania’s Bucks County and Brandywine Valley” By Margaret Bye Richie. John D. Milner& Gregory D. Huber. Published in New York by Rizzoli in 2005. description continues below the picture- DISCUSSION: Stone Houses: Traditional Homes of Pennsylvania’s Bucks County and Brandywine Valley is a unique presentation of beloved building traditions in one of the most charming and historically significant regions in the nation. Houses. Barns, and outbuildings dating from the colonial and Federal periods, built with local stone predominantly in an English Cotswold vernacular style, represent a form that has become popular across the nation. Geoffrey Gross’s stunning photographs document a remarkable collection of early buildings, including the John Chad House(circa 1720) Peter Wentz Farmstead(circa 1758) and ... moreBuckingham Friends Meeting House(1768) as well as more recent designs, in part inspired by such traditional homes, by architects R. Brognard Okie, G. Edwin Brumbaugh, and John D. Milner. Part of the original Pennsylvania Colony founded in March of 1681 by William Penn, the region encompassing Bucks County and the Brandywine Valley is important not only for its history as an early English settlement in the New World, but also for its role as a crucial site in the struggle for American independence. The evidence for this is obvious in the story of its houses. Some notable examples include the Thompson-Neely House at Washington Crossing, in which, it is said, Washington’s officers were billeted during the famous night of his crossing of the Delaware, and Pennsbury Manor, the reconstructed home of William Penn. With its authoritative text and exquisite full-color photography, Stone Houses is a beautiful record of a historically rich regional building tradition” DESCRIPTION: Hardcover. 8.5”x11” 224 pages, color illustrations, dust jacket. CONDITION NOTES: Minor wear. But otherwise clean and nice, with a tight binding. OVERSEAS BUYERS PLEASE NOTE: Our Internation

21 ANTIQUE ISSUES LADIES FLORAL CABINET & PICTORIAL HOME COMPANION 1872-1873
21 ANTIQUE ISSUES LADIES FLORAL CABINET& PICTORIAL HOME COMPANION 1872-1873, 21 ANTIQUE ISSUES- THE LADIES FLORAL CABINET AND PICTORIAL HOME COMPANION- 1872-1873- HAND BOUND This Antique Hand Bound Album with 21 Antique Back Issues of THE LADIES FLORAL CABINET and PICTORIAL HOME COMPANION- A Monthly Illustrated Newsprint Magazine by Henry T. Williams of New York- that date from January 1872 thru December 1873 with only 3 months missing- July from both years& April from 1873- was apparently bound by hand a very long time ago& not in any specific order. They are all mixed up with some of the oldest ones at the back. They are 16 1/2 by 12 inches& printed on Newsprint paper with decorative illustrated borders on every page, each issue has 8 pages printed front& back including the covers so there are approx. 168 pages all together, ... morethey are numbered consecutively, but again the issues are not bound in any particular order, and they are filled with wonderful articles, fabulous illustrations& graphics, of course amazine Antique Advertisements throughout. The illustrated stiff paper cover with the taped spine is worn around the edges with a big torn piece across the bottom corner tip& the tape loose& torn at the heel& along the front- it looks like it was water damaged long ago, both inside covers are lined in the printed paper& the gutter is cracked all the way inside the front cover& a bit at the top inside the back, the 1st few pages are discolored from age& exposure& rippled along the gutter with a bit of faint foxing around the edges, but as you go further into the volume the pages are pretty much clean& tight. There are a few pages more at the back where the center vertical fold line is torn& some of the pages were taped at this point along the outer edge to help prevent this, but even with all of this, this is a fabulous and rare find indeed with fabulous illustrations& ads throughout. I have many other unique Vintage& Collectible items listed on

DUTCH 16th & 17th CENTURY GARDENS AS SHOWN IN PAINTINGS & PRINTS -Frick Museum
Gardens of Earthly Delight. Sixteenth and Seventeenth Century Netherlandish Gardens” By Kahren Jones Helerstedt. Published in Pittsburgh by the Frick Art Museum in 1986. description continues below the picture- DISCUSSION: Gardens have always been intriguing artistic subjects. Mainly because of their mythological and Biblical symbolism. The Dutch had no formal gardens of their own until the late 17th century, and early Netherlandish artists used Italian models, and imagination, to portray them. Thus, unlike the realistic interiors of the same period, most of the garden settings are pure fantasy. The exhibition of paintings, drawings, prints, and rare books for which this is the catalog was not exactly a blockbuster; budget restrictions limited borrowing to the East Coast, and many of the artists are obscure. Nevertheless, the show had substance, ... morefocusing more on iconography than artistic merit, and Hellerstedt discusses aspects of Netherlandish art not previously examined in depth. CARVED STONE GARGOYLE SCULPTURE on MEDIEVAL BUILDINGS -GREAT PICTURES
Holy Terrors. Gargoyles on Medieval Buildings” By Janetta Rebold Benton. Published in New York by Abbeville Press in 1997. description continues below the picture- DISCUSSION: The true gargoyle is a waterspout. An architectural necessity that medieval artisans transformed into functional fantasies. In clear, lively language, the introduction to Holy Terrors explains everything that is known about the history, construction, and purposes of these often rude and rowdy characters. The three chapters that follow are devoted to the gargoyles themselves, in human, animal, and grotesque form. Delving into their sometimes funny, sometimes mysterious meanings, Dr. Benton's entertaining text puts these irresistible creatures into the context of medieval life, and she provides a guide to gargoyle sites, so that readers can visit their favorites. ... moreThis is, amazingly, the first book for adults to provide a full overview of medieval gargoyles, and it is bound to increase the already numerous legions of gargoyle admirers” DESCRIPTION: Hardcover. 8.5”x8.5” 140 pages, color illustrations, dust jacket. Peter the Great's Russian Amber Room, Lost or Found???
The Amber Room. The Fate of the World’s Greatest Lost Treasure" By Catherine Scott Clark& Adrian Levy. Published by Walker& Company in 2004. DISCUSSION: The team that reported on the horrors of the Burmese jade trade in The Stone of Heaven here investigates what may be the greatest single art theft in modern history: the looting of the Amber Room from St. Petersburg by the Nazis in 1941. The glittering amber panels. Enough to cover a palace room, were a gift of Frederick I of Prussia to Peter the Great in 1701. The stolen panels were displayed in Königsberg Castle in 1944, but disappeared after the city fell to the Red Army. Describing the history, theft, and headline-grabbing search for the Amber Room, the authors suggest it may long since have been destroyed. In their search to find the truth they uncover more lies. Furniture and Ormolu, Gold and Silver, and Sevres Porcelain in the Mid-Eighteenth Century” By Svend Eriksen. Published in London by Faber& Faber in 1970. description continues below the picture- DISCUSSION: An important work on early French Neoclassic furniture. Porcelain, silver, and other arts, based on a vast selection of photographs and much documentary evidence unearthed from the incomplete records that remain from 18th century France(in Paris, for instance, many early records were lost in the riots of 1871, following defeat in the Franco-Prussian War) The author notes- This book springs from the fact that, in the course of some years' search in museums and private collections, I have come across a variety of objects which would ... moreseem to stand stylistically somewhere between Rococo and the Neo-Classical phases-between Louis Quinze and Louis Seize- and I have tried to assemble information that might increase our understanding of the artistic developments of that stage. To put it another way, the book is intended as an aid to the piecing together of a vast jigsaw puzzle which fell on the floor some two hundred years ago.unfortunately many of the pieces seem to have disappeared completely.yet no game is worth playing if it is too easy, and one can derive much pleasure from just piecing bits of it together" DESCRIPTION: Hardcover. 9"x11" 432 pages plus 9 color and 499 black& white illustrations. Book: 1770 DIDEROT PLATES & TEXT - MAKING GLASS MIRRORS
Miroitier Metteur au Teint" Miroitier" Published in Paris: ca 1770. description continues below the picture- DISCUSSION: The“Encyclopedie. Ou dictionnaire raisonne des sciences, des arts et des métiers” Encyclopedia, or a systematic dictionary of the sciences, arts, and crafts" was one of the greatest achievements of scholarship and literature in the late 18th century world. Published in France under the editorship of Denis Diderot between 1751 and 1772, with additions until 1780, Diderot once explained that"All things must be examined, debated, investigated without exception and without regard for anyone's feelings. Of course this was not a universally popular sentiment in late 18th century France, and the book was officially banned by the King in 1759. Officially banned or not, work continued quite openly, and ... morein the end the‘Encyclopedie’ presented a marvelous overview of human knowledge at the time. Among the most valuable articles were those discussing, explaining and illustrating the crafts and trades, complete with views of workshop interiors, tools and manufacturing methods. Many scholars also give the‘Encyclopedie’ credit for helping to introduce and popularize philosophies of egalitarianism which would help lead to the French Revolution, but that’s a topic for anther day. This is an exceptionally interesting Diderot'Encyclopedie' section. Illustrating the art of mirror makers. The plates include several workshop interiors, one illustrating the metallic backing being poured on and buffed, the other showing the plates being sized, polished and stacked. There are also several plates illustrating the various tools of the mirror-makers craft. DESCRIPTION: Disbound. 10"x16" 2 pages of text plus 8 engraved plates. JOHN POLLARD SEDDON, VICTORIAN ARCHITECT & DESIGNER DRAWINGS in the V&A MUSEUM
John Pollard Seddon. Catalogues of Architectural Drawings in the Victoria and Albert Museum” By Michael Darby. Published in London by the Victoria& Albert Museum in 1983. description continues below the picture- DISCUSSION: Seddon was an inventive Victorian architect who worked in the Gothic Revival style and was involved with the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. This catalogue contains some of the almost 2000 designs which were presented to the V&A by Seddon's daughter in 1896. Ranging from bungalows to cathedrals. John Pollard Seddon[1827-1906] was an English architect. His father was a cabinetmaker and his brother Thomas Seddon(1821- 1856) a landscape painter. J. P. Seddon was a pupil of Thomas Leverton Donaldson, though Donaldson was a classical architect and Seddon preferred the Gothic Revivalism of John Ruskin. Between 1852 and ... more1863 J.P. Seddon formed a partnership with John Prichard. Many of their major commissions were church restoration works, most famously for Llandaff Cathedral. In 1871 he submitted a design in a competition for Holloway Sanatorium. His works include the University College of Wales building in Aberystwyth, St Peter's Church, Ayot St Peter, Hertfordshire, St Catherine's, Hoarwithy, Herefordshire, and, with John Prichard, the Church of St John, Llandenny and limited extensions to Dingestow Court, Monmouthshire, including the stables. He was also a prolific designer of furniture, metalwork, stained glass, tiles and ceramics. DESCRIPTION: Hardcover. 8.5"x12" 120 pages, many black& white illustrations, dust jacket.
