Primitive Vintage Antique Weather Vane Rooster From the estate of a local antique collector. This is a nice Rooster Weather Vane. Nice decorative rooster, made from copper that has developed a nice aged green patina. He is standing on an arrow and there is a pole that extends downward to attach it to a pole. He is in good vintage condition, the feather on the arrow has separated from the shaft about 3/4 of the length, but it still remains attached. Just off a barn in central Iowa where it's stood for over 90 years. 55 1/2" Tall. Arrow with man in jalopy is 24 3/4" long with the car itself 10" long and 5" high. Car is aluminum. Arrow and 3 shafts to legs are cast iron and are weathered. No breaks. Lightning rod is copper which has verdigris with time. Only problem is the ring under the arrow has split. Does not affect it in any way. Could be replaced. This is"as found" condition with a great old surface from age and exposure. Very folk art in appearance. Large Antique Copper Horse Weathervane Running Race Cast Metal Zinc Weather Vane
This is a really nice antique copper running horse weathervane with a solid cast metal( lead/zinc)head. Fine Patina is evidence of years in the weather. No idea of age. This beautiful piece was taken from a barn roof in PA. Found at a local estate. The man having the sale said as a boy his family bought a farm and this horse weather vane was on the barn. He said they lived there for 20 years and when they moved his father took it with them. The horse does not appear to have been cleaned or polished and shows the work of nature. I did wipe it down. The horse's head is made of zinc/lead I'm told and the body is hand formed from heavy copper and hot lead soldered together into this fine looking horse. The piece is 17" from top of the ear to the top of the pipe, The pipe is 33" long and weighs over 8 pounds. Nice detail in proper ... morehorse anatomy with muscles and veins showing. Head, eyes and mouth are so realistic. This piece is as good as I have seen and in marvelous condition with no cracks, dents or other distractions. A great piece for the barn or house roof or used inside mounted as a classic primitive. Make sure you use the zoom feature to see the great detail. Up for consideration is this stunning 23" Kretzer lightning rod arrow. Made of brass this arrow has a great patina. There is no damage or repairs. The glass is an NOS Kretzer glass that was very difficult to obtain. This is the only modification to this arrow. Also included is the original Kretzer brass ferrule the arrow was mounted on, this also is in great untouched condition, screws work as they should. On my other auctions this week I have listed the pendant hanger and ajax topper that were on the same rod. I personally removed them from a roof and they are new to the market. This is a very charming Weather Vane which I purchased years ago in New Hampshire near Concord. It features a Butterfly seen n profile with his wings up. The Butterfly. The directionals and ball are all made out of cast iron and gilded over what looks to me like a grey green primer coat. Some of the gilding has worn away, but no rust has appeared on the iron elements. When I mounted this Butterfly I used a new steel rod and a collar to hold the ball in place. These I painted black. As he is now on his wooden stand. This Butterfly is 21 1/4 inches tall and 18 1/5 inches wide. The Butterfly himself is 12 1/2 inches long and 8 1/4 inches tall. The horizontal ... moreelement which acts as the arrow is 18 1/2 inches long and the directionals are 11 1/2 inches long. There is no damage to this Weather Vane. And, on the whole, this Butterfly is in pretty good shape. He still turns on his supporting rod and has a very cheerful aspect. WEATHER VANE: Antique Piglet. Gilded Copper& Iron, 28" Tall x 20.25" Wide If you set your monitor at FULL SCREEN from TOOLS you will be better able to view the photos. This is a very charming Weather Vane featuring a Piglet which I bought in New Hampshire years ago. West of Nashua, near Milford Circle. It also served originally as a lightning rod. I removed the bottom end of the vertical supporting rod which had the remnants of the cables attached and placed the wooden block to give the rod its original height. The tripod support and the arrow are iron. The Piglet. Balls and top spike are all gilded copper. The piglet and top spike seem to have a mustard colored undercoat, which many of these old vanes have. When the gilding begins to wear, this undercoat helps to make it less apparent from a distance. This Weather Vane measures ... more28 inches tall and 20 1/4 inches wide. The tripod support is 11 1/2 inches tall. The arrow, 20 1/4 inches long. The Piglet himself is 9 inches long from his snout to his curly tail and 5 1/4 inches tall. The balls are 3 3/4 inches and 2 1/2 inches in diameter respectively. The spike at the top rises 6 1/4 inches from the small ball. Much of the gilding is worn away and the vertical rod has a great coat of verdigris. On the whole this Weather Vane is in pretty good shape and the Piglet still turns freely on his rod. The photos give a very good idea of the shape and color of this charming Weather Vane. This is a great Weather Vane which I acquired on Charles Street in Boston. At the foot of Beacon Hill. These Grasshopper Weather Vanes are popular in Massachusetts because of the famous one atop Fanueil Hall. The main difference between this one and the one on Fanueil Hall is that this one does not have the spike going through his body. Which looks a little more comfortable to me. But this one does have the green glass eyes. The gilded grasshopper on Fanueil hall was created by Deacon Shem Drowne in 1742. Gilded with gold leaf. The copper weather vane weighs eighty pounds and is four feet long] The weather vane is believed to be modeled after the grasshopper weather vane on ... morethe London Royal Exchange. This weathervane was definitely very ornate for its time. It is cast iron with an arrow at the tip and a rectangle for a stained glass insert at the other end. The glass is missing however it can be replaced. The metal tabs to hold the glass are present. Although I couldn't find a maker's mark. I believe this was made by K retzer. The weathervane is in good condition and ready to be restored. Good project for someone who is enjoys restoring vintage items. All I remember about this item is I purchased it off Ebay 10 years ago for 95.00. I remember it was pre 1900 and the person had photos of where it was from. It came off a victorian house in Pennsylvania. I dont have the photos anymore. I was going to use it for a mixed media art project but never got around to it. It is made of Iron and gilded and came from the top of a demolished chapel in Italy. This type of Weather Vane with a Cockerel was a frequent feature of continental churches and chapels. A papal edict in the 9th century was responsible for the proliferation of Cockerels. Or Weathercocks, as they were also called, on churches. This edict required every Church in Christendom to be mounted by a Cockerel. This symbol was to recall Peter's betrayal of Christ(Luke 22:34) I tell you, Peter, the cock shall not crow this day, before you will deny three times that you know me" Although only the symbol of the ... morecockerel was required by the edict, the motif, it seems, was quickly wedded with the weathervane. By the 13th century the word for weathercock(gallum) and weathervane(ventrologium) had become interchangeable. Interestingly, early weathercocks did not include cardinal letters, as Christian churches always lay east to west. The also almost always, for some reason, had no legs or feet. Below is an example of another early Cockerel from Europe: I was recently visting some friends in Florence and they took me to the shop of an aquaintance of theirs who is an antiques dealer. It was there that I found this Cockerel. It was a little difficult to get the story of its origin. As many dealers are understandably reluctant to reveal their sources. But from what I could understand, this Cockerel was on a small chapel to the northeast of Florence which had been damaged in the earthquake there a few years ago. Since then, the walls of the building had been shored up with planks and anything of value had been removed, including this Cockerel. But a few years ago it was decided that the building was too far gone to try to reconstruct it. And since it was the private property of a local wealthy

This is a charming Weather Vane featuring a Rooster and an interesting arrow which I picked up years ago near Salisbury. Maryland, which is the headquarters for Tyson's Chicken. All around there is serious chicken raising country. This Rooster seems to have had several coats of paint during his long lifetime. The last one being red. He is made from cut out iron sheeting. The Rooster and his arrow are one piece. Rather than being commercially produced, I tend to think that this Rooster was a one off produced by a very talented metal worker. I have never seen an arrow quite like his, with its wavy top and tulip shapes used for both the fletchings and the ... morepoint. As he is now on his wooden stand. This Rooster is 23 1/2 inches tall and 20 inches long. The Rooster himself is 8 1/4 inches tall and 7 1/4 inches from his breast to the back of his tail feathers. The arrow is 20 inches long, and the directionals are 15 1/4 inches long. Some of the paint is beginning to flake on the bottom of the ordinals. But other than that, this Rooster is in pretty good shape and still turns freely on his supporting rod. The photos give an exellent idea of the charm and cheerfullness of this Rooster Weather Vane. ANTIQUE c.1900 CAST IRON and COPPER WEATHER VANE ARROW 28 1/2" LENGTH Great old cast iron weather vane directional arrow. Figural arrow has a center double loop where it can be placed on a lightening rod or pole. The opposing end of the arrow is thick copper and was made so an animal or figure could be mounted to it. The cast iron arrow and copper rod are riveted together in the center. This appears to be all original and is all very old but solid and free of cracks or damage. Some typical pitting in the cast iron as shown. The overall length is 28 1/2" With the arrow portion measuring about 16 inches long and the copper rod portion measuring about 12 1/2 inches long. Up for consideration is this copper hollow body Rooster weathervane. Nice condition overall. There are hacksaw cuts where the two brass rods intersect, It looks like someone was trying to remove it and didn't know what they were doing. This doesn't affect the stability of the weathervane it is still solid. Everything else is as it should be. Rooster comes with the stand in the pictures. I can give no information as to the origin of this item but I can say that it is certainly old and hand-made by a craftsman. It has been used for its intended purpose for a long period of time. Which raises the possibility that it was hand-made to order i.e. unique or only made in one area by one man. Because it's old anyway and the weathering aged it further. It is not possible to say how old it is. It could well be antique. It certainly isn't an artificially aged reproduction. Although the item is light. It must be packed in a very large cardboard box. This is a very interesting and vigorous Weather Vane topper I bought years ago near Nashua. New Hampshire. It features an Eagle Rampant; that is, an Eagle in the attack position. It is a peculiarly American design and one which has been used in times of war. I believe this Eagle dates form the late 1800's. The previous owner thought he dated from the early 1800's; I think he is a little later. But I may be mistaken. A similar design sold recently by one of the large auction houses in New York. The body of our Eagle is made of thick sheet iron; the top spike and ball are copper. The body of the Eagle is bolted to a hollow supporting ... morerod which I believe is brass. The whole figure has been gilded. There appear to be some traces of an undercoat of a mustard color which was sometimes used on these older vanes so that when the gilding started to wear it would not be so obvious when viewed from the ground. As he is now on his wooden stand. This Eagle is 30 1/2 inches tall and 24 inches wide. The Eagle himself is 19 1/4 inches tall from his talons to the top of his wings and 24 inches long from the point of his beak to the back of his tail feathers. The gilding is worn and a few of the small points of the tail feathers are slightly bent. But other than this, the Eagle is in pretty good shape. The bolts are still strong and secure and there are no structural issues. The photos give an excellent idea of this example of a particularly American design for a Weather Vane. I believe it dates to the early years of the last century. The Sopwith Camel was a British First world War single-seat biplane fighter introduced on the Western Front in 1917. Manufactured by Sopwith Aviation Company. It had a short-coupled fuselage, heavy, powerful rotary engine and concentrated fire from twin synchronized machine guns. Though difficult to handle, to an experienced pilot it provided unmatched maneuverability. This vintage(50s? metal weathervane spent most of its life mounted to the roof of an auto parts store. The mounting piece has some roof tar stuck to it. It seems in good shape. It is sturdy and the directional arrow spins around. There are some places where the metal paint has been scraped off. The length of the arrow measures 33" The car measures 15.25" in length. WEATHER VANE/ FLAGPOLE TOPPER: Antique Eagle. Gilded Metals, 17" Tall x 11" Wide If you set your monitor at FULL SCREEN from TOOLS you will be better able to view the photos. This is a beautifully modeled and cast antique Eagle made from a metal which I cannot identify except to say that it is non-ferric. The ball is gilded copper. The gilding was applied over a heavy coat of mustard colored sizing which was sometimes used on objects meant for outdoors so that when the gilding started to wear. It wouldn't be so obvious. Much of the gilding and some of the yellow undercoat has worn away from exposure to the elements. I bought this Eagle in New Hampshire more than twenty years ago in a shop along Route 401 that runs between Concord and Portsmouth. It used to be called"Antique Alley" as there were dozens of fine antique ... morestores along the way. I haven't been back in a long time. But the last time I made that run, there were many fewer stores than there used to be. The man from whom I bought this Eagle told me he thought it was part of an old Weather Vane. Maybe. But I don't think so. It looks me as if it may have been meant to go on top of a flag pole. Except that it is much too finely modeled. The feathers are all beautifully articulated and the wings are differentiated from each other. The left wing is raised slightly higher and the tips of its end feathers are more curved than those of the right wing. If it was meant for a flag pole, it must have been a special one. Or it could have been part of some other kind monument which would have been visible at a much closer range than a flag pole. Frankly, I don't really know. But I do know that it is a beautiful thing. On his wooden stand. This Eagle measures 17 1/4 inches tall. The Eagle and the ball are 10 1/2 inches tall. From wingtip to wingtip, he is 11 1/4 inches wide and from his beak to the tip of his tail feathers, he is 6 1/8 inches long.
