Then it goes down into a barley twist post base and a barley twist center cross brace. It is of European origin and dates from the 1880s. We had to make a repair on the bottom of the lid, but it is hardly noticeable. The desk is carved on the sides, base, and every direction you look. It comes with a hand cut dove tail drawer.

This special lap desk was made of a wood with veneer over and a mother of pearl inlay. The interior writing surfice has a blue velvet fabric glued on and a black velvet ribbon acrossed the top where the hings are. There are six compartments on the inside for paper. Writing tools, and whatnots. The top lid has some cracking and veneer is missing on the side and it has damage where the hinges go(on top and bottom) See photos. The lock is present and there is no key. Locking top plate needs to be reattached. Its hinges need to be reworked. The hinges are included. But the location on the box needs to be repaired. Selling this wood secretary desk. This was made by the Rockford Chair and Furniture Co. Rockford ILL. I am not 100% certain, but the research I've done makes me believe it was made between 1920 and 1930, but I could be wrong. This desk measures about 32 1/4" wide by 40" tall. Measures about 17 1/2" deep when closed and 29 1/2" when opened. Has various signs of age/use. Such as light scratches, a chip out of the front foot and some rough marks in the one drawer. This has been in our family since it was bought new- probably in the 1920s- maybe a little earlier. It is in very good condition- original finish and all original hardware and glass. It is very solid. And inside it has various neat cubbies, including two hidden compartments. It has claw feet and a lot of nice details. I have looked around, but haven't been able to find another one exactly like it. The manufacturer's label is long gone, but it is a quality piece(the original owner had a seat on the Philadelphia Stock Exchange) We would keep it but can't find a place to put it in our house.
