I tried to capture the writing in a picture, but could only get the first part of the name. The name stands out the most. The rest of the writing, I believe would be where the owner lived and the year is much fainter. It looks like Maggie C Farr(something) something) 1876 or 1896. The box measures about 11 ¼” x 7 3/4” x 3 ½” closed) Opened and lying flat the desk measures about 16” long. The inside bottom felt writing surface that lifts up is tight and strong while the top felt writing surface that lifts up is wiggly, but still very much intact. Very nice old lap desk. Antique Victorian Wood SlopedTraveling Writing Lap Desk with Mother-of-Pearl Inlay As Is Shown. 4 1/2" height 13 7/8" length 9" width. Opened 18 1/4" Presented is a wonderful antique wooden lap writing desk. With Damage. It was crafted in America. Circa Mid 1800s. This special lap desk was made of a wood with veneer over and a mother of pearl inlay. The interior writing surfice has a blue velvet fabric glued on and a black velvet ribbon acrossed the top where the hings are. There are six compartments on the inside for paper. Writing tools, and whatnots. The top lid has some cracking and veneer is missing on the side and it has damage where the hinges go(on top and bottom) See photos. The lock is present and there is no key. Locking top plate needs to be reattached. Its hinges need to be reworked. The hinges are included. But the location on the box needs to be repaired. This lap desk has really beautiful features that could be nicely fixed up professionally if so desired. Go back in time as you enjoy this historic little lap desk! Folding/ Portable/ Collapseable Desk Like a Spinet Desk but no big drawer along the bottom. It measures 34" long by 20" wide By 34.5" tall. Closed. The legs can be stored inside it measures 8" tall. Weight 49 pounds. There are two drawers and three little pigeon holes at the back. Recent find from an antique dealers estate sale. Not sure of age. It is old and a bit fragile. Was missing knob on front. I just added a brass knob to make it easier to lock. Also. Missing key to lock, but I ground a key to fit and it works. Shows wear from use. A few chips in veneer. Would make a great gift or keep it for yourself. The lap desk is probably English or American made. But that is just a guess, you be the judge. F or your consideration is this great looking vintage lap desk in very nice condition. The wood case has a great luster to it. W hat makes this piece really unique is the great carved in line design with colored corner blocks on the top. And then just a beautiful lock with etched in designs around the key hole. My guess is this piece dates from the early to mid 1900s. You be the judge before buying. This lap desk is beautiful with only small surface scratches. Very nice wood and graining. The inside folding pieces ... moreare still all there as well. The hinges are all there. The top of the desk has a green felt fabric on it which shows wear and is coming apart at the seam where it crossed between the sections. Both sides of the lap desk open for storage. Has open areas for two ink bottles in the well areas. One on the left and one on the right. And a storage area for pens that has a wood cover to remove it. The bottom of the case of the lap desk has no felt on it. I see no maker's mark on the lock mechanism. The two top covers that hinge out are still securely attached to the base of the case by their hinges. The lap desk measures 12" wide. 4" tall and is 8" wide. Don't miss out on this unique item. Antique Vintage Drop Front Secretary Mahagany Writing Table Deco Unusual
This is a very interesting piece of furniture as is has a nice balance with center column of drawers flanked by two recessed small cubicle. The top drawer is a drop front for a desk or writing table. The inside of the front has a nice storage station with two adorable little drawers. The piece is slightly deco and has a subtle beveled edge near the floor. The hardware works well and is original. The drawers work well but are not made with glides so you do need to use two hands to operate them. The finish has normal wear for its age and some scratches to the finish. There are a couple of deeper scratches. Overall this is in fine condition and ready for use. The piece measures 45 1/4" wide 14" deep in the center and 12" deep on the sides. The desk surface when the front is dropped is 29" tall and 25" wide. The drawers ... morehave 7" faces and are 6" deep and 24" wide. The side cupboards measure 32" tall and 8" wide. The top section of the cupboard is 16 1/2" tall and the bottom 15 1/2" Due to the size on this it will be shipped Greyhound which delivers to your nearest depot and you need pick it up upon arrival.
