Description: This listing is for a ... moreChippendale Period Slant Front Desk circa 1770-80. Salem Massachusetts, in the manner of John Chipman(b. 1746-1819) It features solid Cuban Mahogany case, each side crafted of a single solid plank, through-dovetailed at the top and dovetailed at the bottom. The slant front lid features an original keyhole escutcheon over what appears to be the original brass lock, falling onto arms that slide out with brass knobs- one original, the left one replaced. The open writing surface is clean, with what appear to be two original brass hinges, though curious patching is noted below flaking each hinge. Above the writing surface is a collection of nine small drawers, the centermost shell carved, each with brass knobs, below which a gallery of six pigeon holes rest in perfect symmetry. The case has four graduated drawers. Each of which feature period bail pull brass hardware flanking a replaced lock with original brass keyhole escutcheon. The drawers are hand dovetailed front and back, the front dovetails hidden behind applied cockbead molding. The drawers are yellow pine secondaries, the bottom being deeply chamfered along the perimeter to rabbet into the frame. They slide easily in and out of the case over replaced drawer runners, the drawer dividers running into the sides behind a mahogany facade, effectively hiding what are probably dovetail joints. The back of the case has all original backboards, though many nails are replaced. The molded apron features a carved shell drop down medallion in the center that mirrors the design of the middle drawer. The case rests over scroll cut bracket feet, each with an incredible flowing design in the manner of John Chipman. We do not believe the desk was executed in the shop of John Chipman. As his cases will typically feature exposed dovetail drawer dividers in the Newport manner, and the pidgeon-hole gallery will regularly featur

Lenoir, North Carolina-the underside of the table is also stamped: Oval Table-Cherry-29-etc. Made of Cherry wood-medium, chestnut brown stain allows for much of the grain in the wood to show. Set consisted of table with removable center piece-5 regular chairs and one captain's chair with arms-hutch and buffet. I bought these 20 years ago and now am getting different furniture. I had the seats professionally reupholstered long ago to match my decor(olive green/goldish print)I have always kept seat pads on the chairs when in use-so the seats are in great condition. Table measures 58" x 40" x 30 1/2" tall-with an additional center piece that measures 12" wide. The Hutch is 47" x 15" x 70" tall. The Buffet is 57" x 17 1/2" x 30 1/3" tall. Overall very nice condition-normal wear for being 84 years old. Some things I would mention are that the wood color of the center piece section is darker than the rest of the table, it was like that when I bought it-possible meant for contrast or maybe because it was stored out of the light)also a slice of the corner wood has broken off as can be seen the the picture-back rt corner of section. Also-a bit of wood had chipped off the top corner of the table leg(tiny but I mention it to be exact-not seen from the top) The legs screw off with attachment bolts to remove them for storage. Also, one chair missing a decorative wood curve on front leg-shown in pic. Also- scratch on table top-6" and 1 1/2"shown in last pic. If I missed something-please ask. The color of the hutch in the first pic is the true color-rich and beautiful. Carved broken arch pediment, 4 doors on the top, 2 doors on the bottom, 5 dovetailed drawers, drop front leather top writing surface, brass hardware, beautiful wood grain, and ample shelving. Each of the drawers has a working lock and the key is included. There are 3 glass shelves on the upper center and 6 wood shelves in the upper left and right unit. Each of lower doors conceals one wood shelf. The upper unit is lighted but the current cord should be replaced. This item is in wonderful antique condition with only minor signs of age appropriate wear as pictured. The original antique bubble glass ... moreis free from breaks or damage which is very hard to come by. The backing to the upper unit looks to be lined in a off white colored wall paper and there is a red drip stain to this surface as seen in image#18 on the lower left side. Very nice solid mahogany Chippendale Governor Winthrop desk/secretary. Wonderfully constructed desk with very clean lines and detail. You see similar desks often and this one is so so much better! Solid wood even the lattice work in the upper doors. Check out the interior it is spectacular also. The finial in the center of the broken arched top is fine. Just all details are spot on. It has very little of it left but there is a John Widdicomb paper tag on the back and explains the quality. I date this circa 1920-30 at best. Vintage Mahogany Maddox Claw Foot Secretary Desk Bookcase Chippendale PICKUPONLY
This is a very nice Chippendale style mahogany secretary desk. The desk is complete and is in good condition with several cosmetic flaws but great structural integrity. This desk is complete with original"Genuine Mahogany" tag(photo#3) 2 paper Maddox tags and a metal Maddox shield(photo#9) The shield reads"Maddox Colonial Reproductions Jamestown, NY. The desk is complete with claw feet(photo#5) and beautiful top decoration(photo#4) There are four large drawers in the bottom part of the desk that work perfectly. The desk is quite beautiful when you put the slant top down into writing position. The writing surface is in nice condition but does have several scratches on it. There are five small drawers across the inside of the desk that are topped by 8 letter slots(4 on each side) an open center space with a door, and two hidden ... morevertical pillar drawers(photo#6) There is some damage around the knobs of the drawers and door, particular the center drawer and door, and something stuck inside one of the letter slots(see photo#7) The glass doors on the top of the desk are in very nice condition with the only visible flaw being some imperfection(retouching? in the finish at the center of the doors(photo#8) There are three shelves behind the glass doors. The top shelf has some paper stuck on three side of the back left corner(I do not know if it can be removed or what the finish looks like underneath it) and a circular scuff mark on the back in the center(photo#10) On the lower portion of both the right and left side there is some kind of residue or damage(photo#11) I do not know exactly what it is or if it can be repaired. Finally, the curved parts that stick out above the first large drawer have some damage from moving(photo#12) This desk was in the living room of my grandparent's house from the 1950's or 1960's until we recently sold the house and moved it up to New Jersey. 1920-1950 Original Owner Vintage Chippendale Mahogany Secretary This is an authentic antique. Early 20th century circa 1920-1950 Chippendale Federal-Style One-Piece Block Front Secretary. Made mainly of solid mahogany wood. And with minimal veneer that is normal to the design of the age. Many photos are posted so that you can see the quality of this beautiful desk and how well the secretary has been cared for, being from only one owner. This beautiful desk also has the original patina and has never been refinished. This is a beautifully carved and constructed sled top lady’s desk, bench made and dating from 1900s. It’s a great ... moreexample of talented cabinet craftsmanship. It came right out of a fancy home, in original condition, showing original minor nicks and dings that are typical of its age. It wasn’t mass-produced, but was bench made. It has a raised panel hand-cut dovetail drawer with its original hardware. I did look for a signature, but could only find the scribe marks that tell that it’s bench made. It’s very high-quality, and is dovetailed front and back by hand. The carved lid opens with automatic supports, and although it’s never been damaged, the cubbyhole interior shows the last 120 or so years of use. We automatically sand down and refinish the inside, but on this piece we won’t because it is original and bench made. There is a label inside that says the arm supports were patented on April 5, 1907. It has cabriole legs, ball and claw feet, stick and ball spindle gallery that has been repaired at some point, and is in overall great condition. The size across the legs is 28 inches, across the writing lid is 26 inches, 18 inches deep from back to front on the legs, 15 inches deep on the case, and it is 40.5 inches tall from the floor to the gallery. Late 1800. Early 1900's Chippendale style Mahogany Partners Desk. The Legs are curved like a Chippendale style with a Ball and Clawfeet. This desk has been in my family since 1911, it is probably earlier. This desk has drawers on each side, however only one side opens. There is some damage on the sides and legs to the desk, please see pictures. The major flaw is a split piece holding the left rear leg of the desk, this has been poorly repaired, but all the original wood is still there for future repair. Please see photo. Chippendale Style cabinet: As defined by older Maddox Pieces, it is sold wood with a complete finial, Ball and Claw feet, Serpentine front and hidden drawers. Dove tail joints show the detail of quality work. This has two shelves on the top of the desk behind the glass. I discovered Friday that the Finial and small decorative front piece at the base of the Final. Have been removed from the drawer of the secretary. I have cancelled the earlier listing so I could indicate that pieces are missing. Although. A"thorough search" is underway to find the missing pieces, I am not optimistic, as they disappeared during the time a vendor was handling a contents sale for us. Beautiful Antique Chippendale Style Mahogany Secretary Desk
This has been in our family since it was bought new- probably in the 1920s- maybe a little earlier. It is in very good condition- original finish and all original hardware and glass. It is very solid. And inside it has various neat cubbies, including two hidden compartments. It has claw feet and a lot of nice details. I have looked around, but haven't been able to find another one exactly like it. The manufacturer's label is long gone, but it is a quality piece(the original owner had a seat on the Philadelphia Stock Exchange) We would keep it but can't find a place to put it in our house.
