The elegant bookcase top is graced with beautiful crown moulding adorned with incised carved spade moulding. Two handsome horizontal raised burl panels are found above the gorgeous glass doors. The writing surface is covered in black felt and pulls out to provide a larger area. There is a large overhanging drawer as well as two smaller drawers and a cabinet below, for even more storage. All of the drawers have brass pulls and escutcheons and dovetail joints. The lower area is spoon carved in a charming leaf pattern. This piece most likely dates from the late 1800's. This piece is in good condition. But does have some cosmetic flaws, as is to be expected in a piece of this age. Several of the escutcheons are missing as well as the door pulls on the upper cabinet. The drawer pulls are loose as well and one of the escutcheons looks like it has been reattached. There is a piece of wood missing from the molding below the desk top as well. Governor of Massachusetts Bay Colony. The desk is a reproduction made by the Maddox Table Co. of Jamestown, New York. This desk comes right out of the New England estate. The desk has those wonderful features most folks are looking for, such as all-wood drawers with dovetail corners, and clawed feet. The hardware and locks are the originals that came with the desk, not replacements. The desk was in my family for around ... more60 or so years, so the desk dates to at least 1950, and it may be older than that- I'm just not sure. The desk is the slant-front style, hinged at the bottom, so it opens up and the front lays flat to become the writing surface; the desk front can be locked. When the desk front is opened and lowered into the writing position, two arms come out automatically to support the writing surface. Inside the desk there are 3 small drawers, and holders for stashing letters and so forth. In the center of the opened desk, inside, there is a closed compartment with no lock; the compartment door is scratched. There are 3 drawers below the writing surface that extend almost the full width of the desk, and each one of them can be locked. These drawers have a graceful bow front(see photos) Above the desk itself is a prominent feature, a bookcase with 2 shelves covered by hinged glass doors that swing out and can be locked. The bookcase doors do not line up 100% vertically when closed, a common problem with these desks. It also has beautiful scroll work on it. The desk was refinished, but the mirror is original. At one time there must have been a key, but it does not have one now. I inherited this Beautiful Antique Secretary Hutch made by Skandia Furniture Company Rockford.IL a while back I did not get a key. I know it is really old from the early 1900's and has not been refinished there is minor scratches due to age. But over all in wonderful condition. It has Beautiful Detail on the wood the inside has one shelf. The drop down has 3 small drawers the right side arm that comes out when you pull down the drop down is missing it is the arm that should be next to the top drawer on the right see picture. Satinwood string inlays and rosewood banding provide subtle accents, while elegant solid-brass hardware contrast beautifully with the mahogany. Each secretary drawer features hand-cut dovetailed joints, as was common in quality antique furniture, which signify sturdy construction and fine craftsmanship. Fantastic Chippendale Style Walnut Drop Front Secretary Desk Very Very Nice
This listing is for a Fantastic Chippendale Style walnut( I think and am not 100% sure) and fancily veneered vintage Drop Front Secretary Desk with Ball and claw Feet and shell style carvings. 36 inches in overall height. About 16 inches overall depth at widest point of legs and 22 inches overall width again at widest point of legs. Brass lock and hardware but no key. Brass hinges and other hardware. Exotic veneer work. Two drawers. With hardware on one drawer broken and missing in part. Should not be very tough to find replacement hardware. I might be able to assist the buyer in doing so. Drop down door reveals a writing surface roughly 19 inches wide and 14 inches in depth with two drawers and 5 compartments worked in the back. Very elegant. When desk is closed there appears to be what looks like a surface burn mark which I am not sure if it actually is a surface burn mark or part of the grain as no damage can be observed under magnification. you will not find a better quality high end antique secretary desk for sale anywhere. i will tell you why. this piece.
