There is a name and year written on the bottom of the desk, but it is very faint and can only be seen while hold the desk at a certain angle to the light. I tried to capture the writing in a picture, but could only get the first part of the name. The name stands out the most. The rest of the writing, I believe would be where the owner lived and the year is much fainter. It looks like Maggie C Farr(something) something) 1876 or 1896. The box measures about 11 ¼” x 7 3/4” x 3 ½” closed) Opened and lying flat the desk measures about 16” long. The inside bottom felt writing surface that lifts up is tight and strong while the top felt writing surface that lifts up is wiggly, but still very much intact. Very nice old lap desk. This is a turn of the century wood lap desk with some issues. It measures about 11-5/8" by 8" by 3-1/2" deep. The wood is probably walnut or mahogany and does have age wear- a solid box- both the cover and the bottom have splits as you can see in the photos- has the compartments- one of the small dividers is missing- not sure if the locking mechanism works as there is no key. This is a wonderful antique faux painted Lap Desk from the early 1800's. It is in very good condition for its age and use. The desk has all of its original finish. The desk has its original glass ink holders. It has a small shrinkage crack on the top lid of the desk which does not detract and adds to its lovely authentic original charter. The small inside compartment lid is missing. The desk does not have a key. The desk measures approx. 10 inches or 25.5cm long x 12 inches or 30.5 cm wide x 31/2 inches or 9 cm deep. It is a slant top lap desk with a brass piano hinged lid that opens to store paper. Pens, pencils, etc. There is also a built in pencil tray groove at the top. Great for a young child to use in their room for homework if there is not enough room for a full desk. The craftsman name was Bill Killough. Measures approx. 18" x 14" x 4" at the highest point.

one of 2 writing boards now listed. each is from the same 1900's oak office desk. the boards measure 12"x 26 3/4" x 3/4" the boards have a tiger oak veneer on an oak 12" wide board(no seam) there is a finger groove on the underside. personally. I would do a good cleaning to the boards, maybe a light, fine sanding, oil, and then leave them alone. Would make a great gift or keep it for yourself. The lap desk is probably English or American made. But that is just a guess, you be the judge. F or your consideration is this great looking vintage lap desk in very nice condition. The wood case has a great luster to it. W hat makes this piece really unique is the great carved in line design with colored corner blocks on the top. And then just a beautiful lock with etched in designs around the key hole. My guess is this piece dates from the early to mid 1900s. You be the judge before buying. This lap desk is beautiful with only small surface scratches. Very nice wood and graining. The inside folding pieces ... moreare still all there as well. The hinges are all there. The top of the desk has a green felt fabric on it which shows wear and is coming apart at the seam where it crossed between the sections. Both sides of the lap desk open for storage. Has open areas for two ink bottles in the well areas. One on the left and one on the right. And a storage area for pens that has a wood cover to remove it. The bottom of the case of the lap desk has no felt on it. I see no maker's mark on the lock mechanism. The two top covers that hinge out are still securely attached to the base of the case by their hinges. The lap desk measures 12" wide. 4" tall and is 8" wide. Don't miss out on this unique item. Some wood missing off back and one of the Velvet lined covers has come detached from metal bracket. Couple of pieces of Mother of pearl inlay is missing but could be replaced.
