Governor of Massachusetts Bay Colony. The desk is a reproduction made by the Maddox Table Co. of Jamestown, New York. This desk comes right out of the New England estate. The desk has those wonderful features most folks are looking for, such as all-wood drawers with dovetail corners, and clawed feet. The hardware and locks are the originals that came with the desk, not replacements. The desk was in my family for around ... more60 or so years, so the desk dates to at least 1950, and it may be older than that- I'm just not sure. The desk is the slant-front style, hinged at the bottom, so it opens up and the front lays flat to become the writing surface; the desk front can be locked. When the desk front is opened and lowered into the writing position, two arms come out automatically to support the writing surface. Inside the desk there are 3 small drawers, and holders for stashing letters and so forth. In the center of the opened desk, inside, there is a closed compartment with no lock; the compartment door is scratched. There are 3 drawers below the writing surface that extend almost the full width of the desk, and each one of them can be locked. These drawers have a graceful bow front(see photos) Above the desk itself is a prominent feature, a bookcase with 2 shelves covered by hinged glass doors that swing out and can be locked. The bookcase doors do not line up 100% vertically when closed, a common problem with these desks. Antique Hepplewhite Federal style tambour desk. This piece is handcrafted primarily of solid dark mahogany. Adorned with linear and bell-flower inlays in contrasting woods. The top half of the desk has two tambour-covered sections containing three pigeon holes and a small drawer. There is also a locked center section. Sorry- no key! The lower part has a fold out. First of all this piece stands 48 high x 43 wide x 21 deep This piece is heads and shoulders above any other"Butler's desks" that I and others have personally even. The piece id very old, early 1800's when the holes for the hardware were carved in, and the other tool markings are just as primitive, although the workmanship is fantastic. On this piece, the veneer is all in really great shape! Ther'es no\bubbling, or chipping like you would see in much later pieces. even veneer piece made as late as the 1970's have shown tremendous damage from wear ... moreor even daily polishing. The set up for this piece is like this; Two side by side drawers across the very top, then, one single oversized drawer front, which opens and"drops down" to act as a writing surface, by first pulling the entire panel straight out like a drawer, then pressing both buttons in on the spring loaded latch located on both ends of the panel) exposing all the little compartments and drawers inside, and the backside of the front panel which drops down has a soft, recessed fabric on it for writing which has been left in the original worn condition for the antique value. The mahogany has developed a beautiful patina, so that it now displays a deep, lustrous complexion and a highly pronounced grain. For your consideration. We have a stunning antique desk by Plimpton Scofield Furniture Company of Boston. The company was apparently known in the early 1900’s for their school desks and chairs. A master cabinetmaker tells us. If this desk was used in a school, it was at the head of the class. The wood is flame brown mahogany with chestnut on the fronts of the drawers. The desk measures 4 feet wide by 29 ¼ inches deep by 30 ½ inches tall. It is in excellent condition. The pictures do not do justice to this exquisite piece. Local pickup is available. Otherwise. Tel: 01432 357753 Description: This is a very nice quality mid to late 20th Century mahogany large twin pedestal office/ writing table/ desk with antiqued gilded tooled red leather skivers/ inlays. The desk stands on a blind plinth with rounded corners. Rising over which are two banks of four drawers, each having solid mahogany fronts with solid brass dropper handles of Rococo design with pierced oval back-plates, the drawers having mahogany linings and dovetail joints. To the kneehole is a single frieze drawer and over each bank there is a pull-out brushing slide. The desk is surmounted by a rounded corner moulded top with an ogee edge cross-banded in mahogany and inset with the antiqued red leather skivers with ... moregold tooling. To the reverse side of the desk there is a panelled back with a modesty panel to the centre. The desk is a free standing piece of furniture to enable it to stand in the centre of a room, and of good size. Date: The desk dates circa 1950- 1980. Condition: The desk is in good original condition for its age. Having one small shrinkage shake in one of the uprights on the rear side of the desk. All of the drawers and slides run well. We are unsure of the age of this desk but looking at the construction we would estimate it was most likely made in the 1940s. The styling is American Revival. This desk carries the makers plaque mounted on the inside of the bottom left drawer. The desk measures 46 inches wide. By 18 1/4 inches deep, and 29 3/4 tall. Condition- The overall condition of this desk is good. The joinery on the drawers is tight, and the drawers pull smoothly. From research I have done on the Internet I believe that this is an antique mahogany Chippendale style secretary bookcase with drop down desk and claw and ball feet. There are three shelves on the upper bookcase with original glass door. It has four drawers below the drop off desk. It is in excellent condition. Everything in its original state. There is one key for the bookcase. This has been in my mother's home for as long as I can remember. There are no labels on the back. The only problem that I see is the center decoration on top is loose. There are no other outstanding problems. This is local pick-up only or you may arrange for shipping.
