Antique Jansen Louis XVI Ebonized Mahogany Display Desk This maginificent display table/bureauplat is charmingly shabby. Though unsigned. It is almost certainly by Maison Jansen. The style, the quality of workmanship, the materials, are clearly of the highest quality. Please see picture number 6 for a close up of the underlying wood grain, which appears to be mahogany(though walnut is not an impossibility) The framed glass top. Reveals 2 separators with gilded scrolling, providing areas for 3 locked drawers. The locks are brand new and not original. This piece would make an impressive jewelry or fine fashion arts display case of pure perfection for any shop featuring an upscale shabby chic style. A nearly identical piece is shown in the June 2013 New York Times Style Magazine on pages 86-87 STYLE: The ebonized mahogany and carved and gilt ... moremolding identify this piece as an interpretation of neoclassical Louis XVI style favored by Maison Jansen and European early 20th century royalty and the Kennedy White House. The republic style legs place it most likely in the 1920-30's era. WORKMANSHIP: The intricate carving. Gilded moldings, and ebonizing are of days-gone-by and simply unavailable in today's market. Though the legs appear somewhat fragile supporting the weight of the overall table, they are solidly attached with heavy metal flanges and grommets. The drawers show the dovetail joints(pictures 9 and 10) All joining of the piece are solid and exhibit NO separation. MATERIALS: Though wood identification is difficult with painted furniture. There are enough small areas with worn paint to show the underlying wood. This is unquestionably a very hard wood, and given the reputation and standards of Maison Jansen, this is almost certainly mahogany. The only mark found is on the bottom of one of the drawers which reads"A Agullo Chapas Finas de Medera" R Agullo is a high-end supplier of wood to cabinet makers in Madrid founded in 1926. Stamped"Made in France" Item# 130006OLV15 This is an outstanding find for any serious interior designer or anyone passionate about Neoclassical forms true to the spirit of Louis XVI furnishings. A French Louis XVI Style Antique Writing Desk executed in solid fruitwood. Presumably Cherry, this piece was crafted during the first half of the 20th Century- this date could probably be further isolated with research into the Circular Crowned Fire Breathing Dragon brand impressed beneath the desk beside the"Made in France" brand. The broad leather top is tooled along the edges. The surface remaining in overall quite good condition despite years of use; it is framed in fruitwood edged by brass tubing, the corners of the frame ... morepinned with exposed pegs. The top projects over three drawers, these hand dovetailed with golden oak secondary woods in the sides, back and machine-chamfered bottom. The original key is retained, working the lock on the middle drawer quite effectively. Each corner of the frame is embellished with gilded ribbed rectangular panels over the legs. The desk rests over turned and tapered legs beneath round brass rings and terminating in capped brass ball feet. It is sturdy and stable. An absolutely perfect piece for regular functional use in a home office or home library. The fruitwood glows throughout with a deep well oxidized patina beneath a polished finish. Measurements: 51 1/8" wide x 27 1/2" deep x 30" high to top; 24" high to underside of apron where the chair would pull under Condition Report: Brass rim with some dents. A very nice antique. Circa 1920's- 1930's, Louis XVI style kidney desk in the round(may also be used as a vanity. It has satinwood veneers with oil painted flowers, the drawer interiors of oak. The six cabriole legs are carved, the legs and trim in the original ivory enamel paint. It has a matching finish chair, new upholstery. The desk measures 30" tall by 43" wide 19" deep. From bottom of center drawer to floor is 23" tall, the kneehole 16" wide from leg to opposite leg. The chair is 35" tall by 16" wide by 17" deep. Very good condition: desk without case chips or cracks, some wear to enamel finish on leg, satinwood veneers without ring spots or fading, floral painting fine. The chair has minor enamel wear. The desk with the chair is for one price.

This writing surface is covered with a mellow blue velour and pulls outward to extend the depth of the working area. Three small drawers are arranged beneath three letter-slots. The rolling top locks with great security. Large steel bolts projecting from either side into brass catches in the case. Pairs of smaller drawers rest beneath a brass gallery on either side of the desk, these flanking an original bevelled glass mirror ... morebeneath an overhanging top shelf. The entire desk is embellished handsomely with brass fluting, these accentuating and drawing heightened attention to the clean and uncomplicated lines of the form.
