When fervor for antiques of the Louis XV taste were still at a remarkable high, this very attractive French Louis XV Bureau Plat was embellished with great effort. Featuring a solid mahogany top with a molded edge, the front of the bureau plat has a long hand dovetailed drawer for storage, opening to reveal a solid golden oak interior. The keyhole escutcheon is probably the finest bronze mount on the desk, a piece that prominently features the rocaille movement around the fully functioning key and lock. The apron is shapely, the front and back mirroring the flow of the top with a slight inversion in the middle. The cabriole legs are formed with very fine gate, the tapering form nearly perfect in proportion to the table, each surmounted with an intense rocaille Gilt bronze mount with the"C" form featured actively as it curls over the entire knee- a thin reed of gilt bronze continues to flow down the leg into the beautiful Gilt bronze sabot mounts with curling toes. This is a fully functional piece. Not just being a beautiful decorative art, the form being sturdy and strong throughout with a clean writing surface. For decorators passionate about the French Louis XV form, this is a wonderful find. Measurements: 39 1/2" wide x 23 7/8" deep x 29 1/4" high to top of desk; 24 1/8" high to underside of drawer(when sitting) Condition Report: Light dings and chips throughout. Including some loss to the corners of the drawer, a small"dent" in the top and scuffing to the top. Overall very attractive, the typical wear and use abrasions being somewhat limited and the overall desk being quite well preserved. The bronzes are of medium quality with some pitting and cracks from the foundry process- we believe the mounts are unsigned, though only one sabot has been removed and examined. Stamped"Made in France" Item# 130006OLV15 This is an outstanding find for any serious interior designer or anyone passionate about Neoclassical forms true to the spirit of Louis XVI furnishings. A French Louis XVI Style Antique Writing Desk executed in solid fruitwood. Presumably Cherry, this piece was crafted during the first half of the 20th Century- this date could probably be further isolated with research into the Circular Crowned Fire Breathing Dragon brand impressed beneath the desk beside the"Made in France" brand. The broad leather top is tooled along the edges. The surface remaining in overall quite good condition despite years of use; it is framed in fruitwood edged by brass tubing, the corners of the frame ... morepinned with exposed pegs. The top projects over three drawers, these hand dovetailed with golden oak secondary woods in the sides, back and machine-chamfered bottom. The original key is retained, working the lock on the middle drawer quite effectively. Each corner of the frame is embellished with gilded ribbed rectangular panels over the legs. The desk rests over turned and tapered legs beneath round brass rings and terminating in capped brass ball feet. It is sturdy and stable. An absolutely perfect piece for regular functional use in a home office or home library. The fruitwood glows throughout with a deep well oxidized patina beneath a polished finish. Measurements: 51 1/8" wide x 27 1/2" deep x 30" high to top; 24" high to underside of apron where the chair would pull under Condition Report: Brass rim with some dents. French Louis XV Style Gilt Mounted Mahogany Bureau Plat Early 20th Century. Probably c. 1910-30 Item# 130008GQJ26 Crafted during the first years of the 20th Century. When fervor for antiques of the Louis XV taste were still at a remarkable high, this very attractive French Louis XV Bureau Plat was embellished with great effort. Featuring a solid mahogany top with a molded edge, the front of the bureau plat has a long hand dovetailed drawer for storage, opening to reveal a solid golden oak interior. The keyhole escutcheon is probably the finest bronze mount on the desk, a piece that prominently features the rocaille movement around the fully functioning key and lock. The apron is shapely, the front and back mirroring the flow of the top with a slight inversion in the middle. The cabriole legs are formed with very fine gate, the tapering form ... morenearly perfect in proportion to the table, each surmounted with an intense rocaille Gilt bronze mount with the"C" form featured actively as it curls over the entire knee- a thin reed of gilt bronze continues to flow down the leg into the beautiful Gilt bronze sabot mounts with curling toes. This is a fully functional piece. Not just being a beautiful decorative art, the form being sturdy and strong throughout with a clean writing surface. For decorators passionate about the French Louis XV form, this is a wonderful find. Measurements: 39 1/2" wide x 23 7/8" deep x 29 1/4" high to top of desk; 24 1/8" high to underside of drawer(when sitting) Condition Report: Light dings and chips throughout. This writing surface is covered with a mellow blue velour and pulls outward to extend the depth of the working area. Three small drawers are arranged beneath three letter-slots. The rolling top locks with great security. Large steel bolts projecting from either side into brass catches in the case. Pairs of smaller drawers rest beneath a brass gallery on either side of the desk, these flanking an original bevelled glass mirror ... morebeneath an overhanging top shelf. The entire desk is embellished handsomely with brass fluting, these accentuating and drawing heightened attention to the clean and uncomplicated lines of the form. The weight of it being considerable in it's solid core construction. Stamped on the underside"Made in Spain" the piece captures the spirit and vibrancy of the Louis XV period with utmost accuracy. The bronze mounts are exceptionally well done for the period, each almost entirely free of casting flaw, these filed and chiseled into perfection before being fire gilded. The female masks on the corners have a hammered texture, these being almost monumental in stature and projection from the legs. The top is a well preserved tooled gilt black leather edged in cross banded veneers and framed in a very thick gilt bronze rim with shell corners.
