There is a name and year written on the bottom of the desk, but it is very faint and can only be seen while hold the desk at a certain angle to the light. I tried to capture the writing in a picture, but could only get the first part of the name. The name stands out the most. The rest of the writing, I believe would be where the owner lived and the year is much fainter. It looks like Maggie C Farr(something) something) 1876 or 1896. The box measures about 11 ¼” x 7 3/4” x 3 ½” closed) Opened and lying flat the desk measures about 16” long. The inside bottom felt writing surface that lifts up is tight and strong while the top felt writing surface that lifts up is wiggly, but still very much intact. Very nice old lap desk. The exquisite top features a radiant Mother of Pearl Cartouche( 2" by 1" with no engravings or markings) It has eight Mother of Pearl Discs that are positioned near the corners. The discs are connected by pewter'stringing lines' to form two rectangles on the top. I believe that the two shortest pewter'stringing lines' on the ends of the inner rectangle may be replacement pieces. There are also four Mother of Pearl discs on the front of the box. Connected by pewter'stringing lines' These also form a rectangle. The escutcheon has an inlay that is a bone color. But does not appear to be Mother of Pearl. The top opens to reveal a green velvet fabric-covered writing slope which appears to be original. There are five separate compartments for ink wells. I believe it to be French Provincial. But since I haven't been able to find one like it, I am unsure. It has a drop down writing surface, with cubbies, and one large drawer. It also has beautiful scroll work on it. The desk was refinished, but the mirror is original. At one time there must have been a key, but it does not have one now. It has three drawers on each side with a useful slide above each bank of drawers. This versatile piece could also be used as a dressing table. Birdseye Maple occurs primarily in Sugar Maple and is a very hard wood with divergent grain structure caused by the presence of the Birdseyes. Matching chair available if required. Birdseye Maple was used by only the most capable cabinetmakers. These artisans had developed the tools and skills to work and finish Birdseye Maple successfully. The main structure is satinwood which has a lovely blonde finish to the wood. Whilst into the structure of this has been embedded the amazingly intricate inlay work consisting of floral scrolls, leaves, urns, emblems and other heraldry. The amount of craftmanship that has gone into this is breathtaking if you imagine each piece of design has to be cut from the softer fruitwoods and then embedded into the main structure of the desk. You can only imagine how long this would take to achieve for a piece like this. The term'Carlton House' has become ... morea popular phrase to describe a writing table with a low superstructure that encloses the sides of the writing area as well as the back. The Prince of Wales. Later George IV, commissioned a table of this model in the 1790s for Carlton House. The desk has a leather topped writing area surrounded by small drawers, cupboards and storage areas. There are also five larger drawers to the front of the desk so there is ample storage space on this piece. Each of the drawers also has more inlay work, as do the legs and the sides. This would make for a stylish piece for your home. Offered as it is in perfect condition. The piece also sits on brass castors so it is easy to move around. We are expecting a lot of interest in this piece which we were lucky enough to buy from a private house call in Regents Park London. The piece is solid and sturdy and will last for generations and hence would also make for a great heirloom. Tel: 01432 357753 Description: This is a very nice quality mid to late 20th Century mahogany large twin pedestal office/ writing table/ desk with antiqued gilded tooled red leather skivers/ inlays. The desk stands on a blind plinth with rounded corners. Rising over which are two banks of four drawers, each having solid mahogany fronts with solid brass dropper handles of Rococo design with pierced oval back-plates, the drawers having mahogany linings and dovetail joints. To the kneehole is a single frieze drawer and over each bank there is a pull-out brushing slide. The desk is surmounted by a rounded corner moulded top with an ogee edge cross-banded in mahogany and inset with the antiqued red leather skivers with ... moregold tooling. To the reverse side of the desk there is a panelled back with a modesty panel to the centre. The desk is a free standing piece of furniture to enable it to stand in the centre of a room, and of good size. Date: The desk dates circa 1950- 1980. Condition: The desk is in good original condition for its age. Having one small shrinkage shake in one of the uprights on the rear side of the desk. All of the drawers and slides run well. Up for your consideration is a beautiful antique oak writing desk. It is in the Mission or Arts and Crafts design. We have had this for y ears in our home. It is quite sturdy. The measurem e nts are 26" deep x 38" wi de x 29 3/4" tall. The front drops down and in side is a writing platform w ith an inkwell hole. Pencil rest, and cubbies in t he back for en v elopes. Etc. To the right is a drawer which actually comes completely out. The hinges have been replaced on this front piece as well as t he glass kno bs. There is an old keyhole and the lock seems to still be intact. However we do not have a key. My husband had his computer on this desk and be cause the underside of the des k is open. He was able to keep the keyboard on the pull-out platform, and the wires fit right throu gh. The wood is oak and is in beautiful condition ... morefor being old.
