Additionally it is a Monocular Compound Achromatic Brass Microscope. The bottom of the body tube has two screw on and off lenses for adjustment of magnification. It features a bull's eye lens. The original Mahogony wood box, glass plates, and a period tweezer. It is 9" tall fully extended and has a 2 3/4" bottom diameter. I did clean up all the lens and provide a basic clean-up on the entire microscope with Windex only. Since it is unmarked. I was able to access a multitude of pictures and info concerning French Drum Microscopes, and I will share my research with you. I will provide four manufacturers' or instances of this type of microscope, to provide dating and provenance: 1. Charles Chevalier lived from 1804 to 1859. His 1848 microscope which can be found on Ebay. Is functionally similar to the instrument being offered, though not as sophisticated as far as features, and operational knob control. Since he worked through 1959, it was very possible that he added the features seen as he progressed from 1848 to 1959. 2. Construction No. 3 by Lerebours& Secretan. Ca1839-1855(designed and described by Lerebours alone in 1839 but not manufactured till 1855) Monocular Compound Achromatic Brass Microscope, height 10 1/5" Rack-and-pinion focusing, one bull's eye lens. It included a Mahogany wood box. This unit can be seen on the Internet and was valued at between $1,000- $2,000.00. 3. French Drum Microscope ca1865. Trade label of James Foster Jr. Mathematical& Philosophical Instrument Maker, Cinncinnati Ohio. This microscope can also be found on the Internet, and is is funtionally equivalent to the instrument being offered. This is one of the more rare Bausch& Lomb American Type microscope models. It was only manufactured over just a brief 3-year period from 1889 to 1891. The featured instrument is very similar in design to the B&L“The Model” microscope. But it lacks the rack and pinion focus mechanism and is built upon a horseshoe shaped foot with rectangular pillars instead of the“Y”shaped foot with round pillars that characterized“The Model. This instrument bears the name of the manufacturer in fancy script on the top rear face of the circular stage. Bausch& Lomb Optical Co. Please see the accompanying close-up image of this inscription) However, this instrument does not bear a typical serial number. For some unknown reason, Bausch& Lomb did not inscribe serial numbers on their earlier microscopes. This is a very cool World War I era antique/vintage Bausch& Lomb microscope acquired from the University of Colorado. Boulder. Ocular, lenses, and body are label'Bausch& Lomb Optical Co. Rochester, NY. This unit has a cast iron body and I believe the rest of it brass, though some of it has been enameled black. One of the lenses is labeled 170mm and the other 16mm. Old Antique Vintage Leitz Wetzlar Brass Microscope Model # 272910
This is an old Leitz Wetzlar brass embellished microscope. No 272910 In fairly good condition overall. Missing one objective lens(it has the 44x and the 10x) Missing the mechanical stage slide holder. But still has the dovetail gear on the side Needs a cleaning- and has some chipping in the black paint over the iron armature- the usual wear. Ocular lens is 10x. Brass is good- scratches seem to only be in the lacquer covering the brass. Needs to be polished- brass is more yellow than is showing in the pictures. Overall it functions properly and there is no mechanical issues. Tube. Condenser and fine focus all seem to be working fine and smoothly. Look at pics- email questions. Ships only in the USA. Unless you really want to pay the extra shipping overseas- it is heavy and would cost a lot more to ship.

The Irises on the condenser move freely as well. The bottom iris looks like it is missing a couple of the leaves, there is what appears to be one of them that was in the drawer of the case. It is shown in one of the pictures. The Case is in good shape. But it is showing it's age, the cabinet does lock and includes a key. This offering is a rather simple brass microscope. From Ernst Leitz, Wetzlar(Germany) the same firm which made the classic Leica Cameras(although this was made long before any Leica Cameras were made) Leica is short for LEItz CAmera) It is rather handsome, simplistically functional, and in my opinion is very attractive on a shelf. Most of the original lacquer is still present. And adds to the attractiveness. It is engraved: E. Leitz Wetzlar- New-York No 30069. Which identifies it as mfg. about 1894, per Bracegirdle's book: Notes on Modern Microscope Manufacturers" The New York address was a sales agency- Leitz microscope manufacture was in Wetzlar. From the beginning(1849) still is. Interestingly, the present new microscopes are now called"Leica" though"Leica" was originally, and for many years, the name of the ... morevery fine and very popular camera made by Leitz, Wetzlar, in Wetzlar. The precision column top knob fine focus. And sliding tube coarse focus still function very well, and the eyepiece and objective do function also. I would not expect this to serve well enough to win you a Nobel Prize, however, while it is not really a very useful microscope, it does work- To demonstrate that, I just put a piece of multi-colored cloth on the stage, illuminated it from above with my pocket LED penlight, and took the picture shown(last above) of black thread crossing colored threads under rather high magnification- just holding my Nikon Coolpix up to the eyepiece, as steadily as I can. I think of this as more something quite attractive. Historic, and interesting to look at, rather than to really use- it is as shown- no case, no extra parts, no sub stage, just a very basic stand- I have kept it on a shelf for years, where it looks quite attractive, and evokes interest. Height measures from 10 to 13 inches, depending on the tube expansion, base is about 3" by 3 1/2" and stage is about 2" by 3" Wt. is est. at 2 lbs. Vintage Brass and Iron Microscope. Both lenses are marked E. Leitz Wetzlar. The eyepiece can be raised and lowered easily and the 2 lower opticals rotate easily. The entire mechanism can pivot 90 degrees so the barrel is horizontal. The lower double mirror is in fine shape- no cracks. The finish on the metal has some nicks and scratches etc. as shown in the photos. Eyepiece lens marked"GRAF APSCO CHICAGO. USA 10X" Lower lenses are marked 5 and 7. All appears to be in good functional use to my untrained eye, but it would need a proper cleaning to remove the dust specks from the lenses. Even as a display piece it is simply stunning. Vintage R. & J. Beck Ltd. Microscope. All Brass, made in London: nice condition.
Here we have a very nice early 20th Century brass Microscope made by R. J. Beck. Ltd, London. The serial number is 27083. The microscope is in very good condition for its age. I lightly cleaned the dust from it. And examined a piece of hair. It works very well, aside from the dust that appears under power. Most of the original Lacquer is still on the brass, probably about 95% or so. Everything works as it should. Including the course and fine focus. The instrument will tip back and stay in place at various angles as it should as well. The iris on the condenser is also functional, however, the leaves were a little banged up when I got it, so I took it apart and put it back together.consequently, I make no assertions that the iris will stay in tact after repeated use. There are two objective lenses on it. One is marked X50. Watson B3379, Para ... more4mm NA 70. The other is marked R& J Beck Ltd 2/3 14mm A. These lenses thread into a dual housing that can be rolled to select one lens or the other. The housing for the lenses slides into place on the microscope as opposed to threading on, and it doesn't seem to fit as tight as it should, though it will stay in place. The mirror is in good shape, with a little clouding around the edges. There is one small ding on the microscope. As pictured in the last pic. It is about the size of a pencil eraser and about 1 milimeter deep; it does not affect anything. Good luck bidding. I will ship International. Vintage Spencer Lens Company Buffalo USA brass & iron Microscope
I don't know much about this microscope. It is a Spencer buffalo. It has 10x. 6x eye pieces. 1.8, 4, 16 MM objectives. SN 39826. I tried to take enough pics so you could see the condition of everything. As far as I can tell everything is in good working condition except for as you can see in the pics, the upper shutter type thing on the condenser is rusty. It comes in the original wood case. I don't have the key for it.

BRASS FIELD MICROSCOPE* WITH Original Box and Instructions(+ Two Slides) Instructions Read: THE MICROSCOPE INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE Press slide pins downward and pass the object holders through the slit in the tube so that the prepared slide is in the centre below the lens. Then Turn the microscope towards the light and hold it CLOSE in front of the eye. Regulating the milled upper part until the proper focus is secured. Together with the apparatus there are supplied to prepared slides and two smooth glass plates and two ground glass plates with cavity. Employ these latter for examinations of solids and liquids. When examining liquids pack the smooth and ground glass plates by rubbing a little oil on them. THE MICROSCOPE MAGNIFIES ABOUT 50 TIMES LINEARLY* Tested. Able to view slides quite well. Only includes components ... moreshown in photographs(as is) Some scuffing to the brass. But overall very nicely aged. Mounting of the slides is a touch chipped and yellowed. Vintage Brass Doctors Working Field Microscope Civil War Era
Untitled Document Description Civil War Era antique brass working Doctors Field Microscope is a great item to own or give as a gift. The microscope itself is in beautiful condition with what I would consider signs of normal use with some small surface scratches on the outside which should buff out and a tarnished patina on the inner surfaces of the tube. These surface blemishes do not take away from the usefulness or desirability of the piece and most likely will disappear if professionally cleaned. There is a light“tuning reel” on the side that adjusts the light source for pin point brightness to a much broader range of light across the entire slide. There are multiple size openings to adjust the light source needed accordingly. It is this small wheel/coin looking thing located on the side just below where the slides are placed. This brass ... moretuning wheel is what makes this a working Doctors field microscope. And not a simple student version. Plus there is an extra screw on the shaft that allows the doctor to secure the microscope to the desired height and keep it there without it slipping. A must have accessory when working long hours in the medical field with this type of microscope. The mirror reflects nicely. But could use a good polishing. The magnifying lenses have no cracks, but have some surface scratches, and needs professional cleaning. Also included is an extra wooden encased magnifier lens. This extra lens would have given the doctor a better look at any given tissue sample placed on a slide. This lens shows signs of field use with surface scratches on the lens that might polish out nicely. The case has a sizable crack running nearly the length of the lid and is not fully secure. But still has integrity. This working Civil War Era Doctors Field Microscope is a really awesome museum quality item all the way around! Up for auction. Is a great example of a Vintage Antique early 1900s microscope by Spencer of Buffalo, NY, U.S.A. that I recently picked up. It has a wonderful patina, aged look to it. The serial number on this microscope is 67927. According to my research. That serial number places the Manufacturing date sometime between June 23, 1920 and May 23, 1921. This microscope is even OLDER than one that just recently sold for about $400. Both of the brass knobs turn and the mirror is intact. With"no cracks" It could use a cleaning if you prefer the polished look, but I know some collectors prefer the aged natural look, so it has been left untouched. I am no expert in microscopes. Comes with lots of Slides and seems to Operate Perfectly moving Smoothly up& down when Turning the Back Dial! It does pivot on any Angle Desired and measures 7" closed to about 8" opened, also, I cannot find a makers name anywhere on it. It comes with 3 objectives which are marked the following: Spencer HOM.IMM L8MM N.A.125, Eleitz Wetzlar 3, and Bausch& Lomb Optics Rochester NY 4MM 0.65 N.A. Comes with a 10X Eyepiece Ernst Leitz Wetzlar. It has a August Waeldin Inc New York N.Y. metal plate on one foot and Spencer Lens Co Buffalo N.Y. engraved on other foot. Bottom mirror has no cracks, one side is nice and the other appears to have nicking but feels smooth to the touch(appearance may be from age? I do not see a serial number marked on the scope however I could be missing it. All components seems to be in good working order, wheels, objective spinner, knobs move smoothly. Comes ... morewith case which is in good shape, latches work fine, handle is worn however can still be carried by the handle with no problems. No key for the case. RARE 1800s Vintage Brass Student Microscope with Rack & Pinion Focus
Featuring Rack& Pinion focus and a compound lens. This rare, Nineteenth Century Brass Student Microscope is in fair original condition with a few correctable problems. The rack and pinion turns and adjusts freely, while the brass arm that holds the lens appears to have a slight bend. One of the two specimen slide clips is missing; and the small, secondary eyepiece lens appears to be cracked with a small missing sliver. The primary lens appears to be fine, and the general appearance of the unpolished brass appears to be good. Each individual part is die-stamped with a small part number. The non-original base is simply a piece of wood that someone stained(the actual base would be a small, dovetailed box with a storage drawer) I believe this microscope was the first item I purchased when I started ebay back in 1998. You are looking at an old Leitz microscope. It works fine. But one of the lenses is missing a part, and the condenser bracket no longer moves up and down freely[oil or repair? The stage is in like new condition, but missing the clips, and most of the brass and paint is in excellent condition. I bought it used for a deal because I needed a number three lens for a folding scope of similar vintage, which I swapped for a B& L lens of low power. I have what I need for homeschooling now, so I thought I would pass it on to the next person. I will listing some more microscope parts and accessories I am not going to use very shortly. The case was repaired by the previous owner and has a key; he inside is nice, but he outside is ugly; apparently, the scope was kept inside in climate control on a bookshelf and the case was stored in an attic for ... moremany years.

Vintage Bausch & Lomb Brass & Cast School Microscope... Patent 1897
This listing is for a vintage Bausch& Lomb brass and cast school microscope. The patent date is Feb. 16. 1897. This piece came out of an old school that has been torn down. There are 3 lenses. there is a 16mm- 0.26 lens. a 4mm-0.65. and the top lens is a#10. There are 5 glass slides and several glass slide covers in the drawer of the case. The microscope measures about 13 1/4" fully extended. There are spots on the brass finish. There are scuffs and scratches from use over the years. There is a chip in the glass on the#10 lens. The lenses need cleaned. I did not attempt to clean the microscope parts.I will leave that to the experts. This is a nice collectible piece. Thanks for looking!

Vintage Graf Apsco Brass & Cast binocular Microscope Great Condition.
Nice Graf Apsco binocular microscope. It has 4 objective lenses. And 2 wide field 10x eyepieces. It had a lamp attachment that is broken off, but either a standard microscope light or mirror will work, or someone might be able to repair it. The finish is in great shape, and it functions like it should. The focus' and the slide movements are smooth and tight.
