Antique brass "New National" microscope by R&J Beck, 1878, excellent condition
Due to some new priorities I clear now a section of my collection of antique microscopes in favor of other models. Between June and August 2013 I will gradually list some high end single and compound microscopes. All dating to the 2 nd half of the 17 th. The 18 th. And the 19 th centuries. If you are a serious collector. Please follow my lists. I will not sell outside of eBay, so please avoid addressing me with such requests. Please read carefully the following report. The figures are an integral part of this description. Offered for auction is an antique high quality brass microscope: The New National" model by R&J Beck. Serial number is 8929. Dating this instrument to 1878. The microscope is extremely well preserved and it comes with a fine mahogany case(with the key. But the lock needs some oiling) two objectives, two oculars, ... morestage forceps, a pair of tweezers, and additional accessories. History This model is representing the typical design of the scientific English microscope of the later 19th century. Known as the Lister-limb. It was designed by Joseph Jackson Lister to stabilize the stand due to the introduction of the achromatic microscope and the higher magnifications that it enabled, and became the first really satisfactory microscope structure ever to be made. Richard Beck and Joseph Beck established the R&J Beck Company in London in 1843. This company introduced a number of inexpensive models and helped popularize the use of the microscope. This model. The second largest in the Beck line(also called the National Microscope) is little changed from one of Smith’s original designs. Made for training medical students in histology, this instrument has a sliding stage with an aperture that can be closed. It was followed by the much lesser quality"Economical" model of the later 19th century. The last figure(ad. is not included in this listing and it is for demonstration purposes only. William.Benjamin Carpenter. That the instrument was a working microscope owned by Dr Carpenter is evidenced by various references: The delivery books of Smith& Beck. Where an Educational model microscope, numbered 1043, was delivered to Dr Carpenter on 13.11.55(see description for a photo of the entry) Smith& Beck's pamphlet of the"Description. With his appointment as Fullerian Professor of Physiology at the Royal Institution in 1845, the position taken shortly after his election as a fellow of the Royal Society. His pioneering researches in marine zoology are considered the impetus behind the subsequent expeditions of HMS Lightning and Challenger, indeed it is possible that the portability of his Educational microscope may have made it perfect for use during Carpenter's regular working excursions to the Scottish islands in the mid to late 1850s, where he examined oceanographic soundings on site, publ

R & J BECK 31 CORNHILL LONDON #6222 ANTIQUE * LARGE BEST * BINOCULAR MICROSCOPE
LARGE BEST* BINOCULAR MICROSCOPE R& J BECK 31 CORNHILL LONDON#6222 Up for auction is a spectacular Victorian era Binocular Microscope dated to around or possibly before c1875 and made with precision craftsmanship by R& J. Beck of 31 Cornhill. London- Serial# 6222. This was the top-of-the-line model produced by the firm at the time. R& J. Becks' names, address, and serial number are engraved on one of feet on the tripod base(shown in photo) The microscope is constructed in solid brass with a bright lacquered finish. It looks to be complete and in good working order. All mechanical movements are working well that I know of and when looking through the eye pieces, I see various levels of brightness of light when moving the mirror. I am obviously not very knowledgeable about the technical aspects of the piece) The original surface ... morefinish show minor wear in spots and especially on the stage plate. The mirror on both sides show crazing and dirt, but reflects light as it should. There is no major damage on the brass. It has a little dirt in some of the cracks and crevasses, but a good cleaning will really bring out the beauty! I don't want to clean it. It should be cleaned professionally as it could be damaged. Please look at the photos very carefully and ask questions- I will try my best to answer anything and will add additional photos if there is anything that I didn't already capture. Although there is no box or accessories included, there is an extra 2" lens attached. This microscope was found at a collector's estate sale and I was absolutely delighted to have the opportunity to purchase and own such a beautiful piece that is also such an important example of microscopic history! This piece is very heavy and will be shipped with USPS signature delivery confirmation and full insurance. Shipping in the Continental US is predetermined. Alaska. Vintage R. & J. Beck Ltd. Microscope. All Brass, made in London: nice condition.
Here we have a very nice early 20th Century brass Microscope made by R. J. Beck. Ltd, London. The serial number is 27083. The microscope is in very good condition for its age. I lightly cleaned the dust from it. And examined a piece of hair. It works very well, aside from the dust that appears under power. Most of the original Lacquer is still on the brass, probably about 95% or so. Everything works as it should. Including the course and fine focus. The instrument will tip back and stay in place at various angles as it should as well. The iris on the condenser is also functional, however, the leaves were a little banged up when I got it, so I took it apart and put it back together.consequently, I make no assertions that the iris will stay in tact after repeated use. There are two objective lenses on it. One is marked X50. Watson B3379, Para ... more4mm NA 70. The other is marked R& J Beck Ltd 2/3 14mm A. These lenses thread into a dual housing that can be rolled to select one lens or the other. The housing for the lenses slides into place on the microscope as opposed to threading on, and it doesn't seem to fit as tight as it should, though it will stay in place. The mirror is in good shape, with a little clouding around the edges. There is one small ding on the microscope. As pictured in the last pic. It is about the size of a pencil eraser and about 1 milimeter deep; it does not affect anything. Good luck bidding. I will ship International. But rates will vary; please contact me for an international shipping quote before bidding.

England and it comes with its original(and beautiful) fitted wooden box, four other lens attachments besides the one on the scope, special oil, brass container and another small glass bottle. The microscope is solid metal with a brass body and a heavy cast metal base. The scope is in excellent condition but the focusing gear slips and will no move the lens mount up and down. I was told that this was a relatively easy fix for an instrument repair person. The optics appears to all be Bosch& Lomb and this is stamped on the bottom of the scope and on one of the brass tubes in the case. The condition is very good and the scope would be spectacular if it was cleaned up. This is certainly ... morethe most vintage microscope we have ever had. It deserves to be in a fine scientific instrument collection! ABOUT THE MANUFACTURER– R& J BECK: The firm that was ultimately to become R& J Beck was founded by James Smith(1789– 1870) who was a very talented mathematical instrument maker. It was rather late in his life. At age 50, when he established himself in business in 1839 in London. From 1839 to 1847, his business was located at 50 Ironmonger Row, Old Street, London. Smith received the assistance of the famous lens maker, J.J. Lister, in the design of his 1inch, ½ inch and ¼ inch objective lenses used on his microscopes. Smith also made microscopes for Lister’s many clients. In 1840, Stand Number 41 went to Lister himself and in 1841 Stand Number 43 was sold to the Microscopical Society of London. In addition, one of Smith’s microscopes found its way into the hands of the famous naturalist, Charles Darwin. A nephew of J. J. Lister was Richard Beck(1827– 1866) Who was sent by Lister as an apprentice to Smith in 1846. One year later(in 1847) Beck was taken into partnership with Smith, and the firm was called“Smith& Beck. At this time the new partnership w

Striking Smith Beck & Beck Binocular Microscope in Good Condition. England, 1860
Striking Binocular Microscope Smith Beck& Beck in Good Condition. England. 1860 Fine binocular microscope made 1860. Quite well preserved and working right. This instrument was manufactured in England and has survived to our days in good condition. It comes in its original case, made of solid mahogany wood and also well preserved. Most of the microscope’s component parts are made of polished brass, and a few are made of black iron. The instrument mounts a three-lens revolving nosepiece and comes with some accessories that are stored in their corresponding compartments, inside the wooden box. At the foot of the microscope we find the embossed manufacturer’s name: SMITH. BECK& BECK– LONDON. We can also see the serial number 1454 engraved into a golden oval shape. The manufacturing firm was founded by James Smith, who was actually fired ... moreby Joseph Jackson Lister(a famous designer of object lens systems) to make good quality stands for his developments. In 1841 and thanks to Lister’s help, Smith had already had a business of his own in London. In 1847 Richard Beck, a nephew of Lister’s, was sent as an apprentice to Smith’s factory and the firm started to be called Smith& Beck. Later, Beck’s brother(Joseph) joined them and the firm changed its name for Smith, Beck& Beck. This particular microscope was manufactured in those times. In spite of being around 150 years old. The microscope looks great. The brass shows the logical though subtle signs of the trace of time; these details provide the piece with personality. This instrument can also be folded in order to be put away into the wooden case, in its own compartment. The case is also in good condition and preserves the original handle and shutting hooks. Inside the lid there is a label with the name of an English scientific material maker, H. CARTER BOWLES. Any lover of scientific antiques will appreciate this rare binocular microscope’s beauty and functionality. Measurements: Width: 7.4 in/19 cm. Height: 12.9 in/33 cm. I think I left nothing in the des

R& J Beck Microscope and Case Brass Economic Model 1870s Serial# 16717 London Note: All items in our store include NO sales tax to our US customers! Here is a great R&J Becker Microscope and Case for your buying consideration. Recently acquired it at an auction. Would make a great gift or keep it for yourself! This microscope was made by R& J Beck of London. England. With the serial number of 16717 it dates back to the 1870s. Both of those pieces of information are engraved on one of the legs of the base of the microscope. This microscope is the"Economic" model from what I have researched online. Not noted on microscope or case anywhere. The microscope was distributed in the United States by William Brown& Earle of Philadelphia. PA. That is engraved on the microscope leg and on a label on the top of the case on a ... morebrass plate. The microscope still has a nice brass finish on it. Not sure if brass all way thru or not. The reflector mirror shows blistering to the glass. Still all in place. The feet are in place. No cracking or repairs to the metal case. Both the levers to adjust the focus are in place and operable. The microscope in fully recessed position is 10.75" tall. By 5.5" across, by 6.75" wide. The case is 12/5" tall, by 8-1/8" across, by 6-3/8" wide. The lock is in place on the case, no key.
