It has a turned column for the iron pump arm and a brass piston casing. A series of tubes feeds to a 8 1/2" diameter brass plate with a frosted glass top. It has a hand-blown glass bell jar with lots of bubbles. There is a hook inside of the dome, also made of glass. It measures at approx. 29 1/2" tall x 28 1/2" long x 9 3/4 deep. This is a solid, heavy piece. There are places of wood rubbing, mahogany wood chipping, and wear on the metals and cast iron handle. Oxidation and signs of well use on the brass piston casing. ANTIQUE J. ZENTMAYER MICROSCOPE PATENT DATE 1876 WITH CASE AND BELL JAR COVER
This antique brass microscope was manufactured by J. ZENTMAYER and is marked on the base with his name. PHILA. and PAT'D AUG 15 76.The numeral 8 is stamped on principal components. The microscope has a dovetail joined mahogany case with a slide-in box for objectives and accessories. The microscope also has a 15" high x 9 3/8" outside diameter bell jar cover with no cracks or chips. Also included with the microscope are the following: Three position rotating nosepiece is marked BAUSCH AND LOMB OPT. CO. ROCHESTER N.Y. Each threaded objective receptacle is marked respectively 1/12. 1/6 and 2/3. Nosepiece is also stamped with the number 59. Two unmarked objectives that are original to the microscope. One objective in a threaded brass canister marked C. REICHERT. WIEN, 18b, 1/12, Homog. 1mm, Apert. 1.25 and No. 10489. One objective ... morein a threaded brass canister marked C. REICHERT. WIEN and No. 7a. All objectives fit the nosepiece and the microscope and have been a set with the micrcroscope case and bell jar for more than a hundred years. This microscope belonged to William J. Burns. MD(1859-1948) Dr. Burns practiced medicine in, and was a prominent member of, the village of Sea Cliff, Long Island, NY from the last quarter of the 19th century through the first quarter of the 20th century. He was also the Public Health Officer for the Town of Oyster Bay, NY. The microscope and accoutrements are in fine condition commensurate with their use and age with the following discrepancies noted: Brass is lightly tarnished. Case lock and key are operational. But strike plate is broken. One joint on case door is slightly open due to age shrinkage of the wood. The seller will pay for shipping. CENTRAL SCIENTIFIC COMPANY ANTIQUE LEVER ACTION AIR PUMP WITH BELL JAR* Pictured is a Central Scientific Company lever action air pump. Central Scientific Company was founded in 1900 in downtown Chicago. It was formed out of what was left of the Olmstad Scientific Company. Central Scientific manufactured and distributed science teaching equipment for schools. Colleges, and universities by catalog mail order. The trademark"CENCO" was used from 1909 onwards. CENCO dominated the field of selling science education equipment through their mail order catalog. As the nineteenth century began to wind down. Table-top pumps began to be standard issue for college collections. This one, is similar to the one at Kenyon College in Gambier, Ohio, which was made by James. W. Queen of Philadelphia; in the 1881. It was known as the Queen Pump. The ... moredimensions of the pump are 28” x 11” 31. The 12” ruler is pictured for scale. The piston-type vacuum pump was invented by Otto von Guericke(1602-1686; see photo) in the course of a series of experiments on the production and effects of a vacuum. He used it to investigate the properties of the vacuum. With his experiments Guericke disproved the hypothesis of"horror vacui" That nature abhors a vacuum. Aristotle in e.g. Physics IV 6-9 had argued against the existence of the void and his views commanded near universal endorsement by philosophers and scientists up to the 17th century. Guericke showed that substances were not pulled by a vacuum, but were pushed by the pressure of the surrounding fluids. One time he pumped out the air out of 2 copper half globes. The air pressure outside held the halves so tightly that 16 horses couldn't pull them apart! Pictured is Page 416 from Central Scientific Company’s 1918 catalog which shows this exact device. Early 20th century scientific instruments are becoming quite rare particularly one that is in as fine condition as this one. The thick glass bell jar is often missing. This is an ANTIQUE Spencer BRASS Microscope. It was given to me by my family doctor in 1955- he had it in medical school. It comes with a very tall beautiful GLASS VESSEL(Bell Jar) enclosure that envelopes the microscope. SEE PHOTOS) The Bell Jar consists of very thick heavy glass with a flat smooth bottom that creates a tight seal. It is 19.25 tall x 11” diameter at the base. And a 9” diameter cylinder. The combination of the vessel and microscope makes for an exquisite presentation. Both have been kept in air conditioned storage for 51 YEARS! The microscope is in very good condition.
