Antique Spencer Dissecting Microscope Late 1800’s Unique Monocular Magnifier NY
This rarely seen antique dissecting microscope is by Spencer and dates to the 1800's. Charles A. Spencer is known as America's first microscope maker. The microscope is marked: Spencer Buffalo USA. The microscope has a cast iron stand. It is in fair condition. The knobs on the sides move the lens but are very stiff and probably need some oiling. The bottom has the reflecting mirror and there is a thick. Beveled glass plate on the top that has some scratches. The arms for holding the glass plate are missing. The lens on the top is marked 10X doublet B&L O Co. U.S.A. The microscope measures 7 ½ inches long with the eye piece fully extended and it is 3 ½ inches wide and 5 inches deep. Rare Joseph Zentmayer. Philadelphia, dissecting microscope with original case, 2 lenses and a few tools. Some discoloration to brass. Swivel arm lens holder has a slight bend to it however it still functions properly. Reflecting mirror has some spotting. Sliding drawer holds 2 lenses and tools. Case measures; 6 1/2" H. X 5 3/4" W. Chrome and paint are in good shape. One leg of the stand is marked Spencer Lens Company. A code of some sort has been scratched on the other. There does not appear to be a serial number. The box is intact with a uniform finish but looks like it is missing an internal strip on the back of the door that might have held lenses. The back of the box is held on by two brads. There is no sign of the back ever having been glued. Two lenses are supplied; a 9X marked Spencer and a 12x marked AO(American Optical) The 1924 catalog lists this as coming with either a 6x and 12x lenses or a single 9x lens. Label says Bausch& Lomb Optical Co. Rochester NY 133384. The two lenses say Coddington B& L O. CO. and one is 19mm the other is 38mm. Tongue and groove wooden box has shelf for lenses. Brass handle and hinges. Generally good conditions. A little spotting on one side of the mirror but the other side is perfect and minor rust on the screw tops. Bausch& Lomb. Of Rochester New York, introduced this simple monocular dissecting microscope in 1903. The instrument is supported by a sturdy brass horseshoe-shaped base that secures a four-inch tubular pillar upon which the stage and eyepiece(ocular) are mounted. A swinging arm that houses the ocular is attached to the top of the pillar. The stage plate is four and a half inches square and has a glass specimen plate of the same size. The substage double mirror is attached to the pillar via ... morea swinging tailpiece. SIMPLE DISSECTING MICROSCOPE. CIRCA 1870 A great simple brass dissecting microscope. The maker is unknown. Solid construction. A heavy instrument. It is all brass construction with a glass stage and a black insert. The glass stage does not have any cracks, a thick plate of round glass with a bevel edge, measuring 4 3/4" in diameter. There is a large round mirror( the mirror is only on one side) for a light source and is attached to a vertical pillar with a rack and pinion adjustment. This pillar also serves as one of the three legs for support. At the top of the pillar is the magnifying ocular inserted in an arm that will swing to either side. The pillar with the ocular will raise to 5" There is not a case to store the microscope. Nice instrument!

It is a Barnes style, popular with students. It comes with the stage clips and tray, lens holder, and mirror and tray. It also has three lenses. Lenses are marked: Bausch and Lomb Optical Co 1 inch, Bausch and Lomb Co. Aplanatic Triplet 1 inch, 1/2 inch. It appears to be missing the glass stage plate and black/white metal plate. Of the University of Pennsylvania, in has botanical classes; but it is quite sufficient for general dissecting purposes. It is made entirely of brass, handsomely polished, and consists of a circular base five inches in diameter, upon which stands a stout pillar supporting a commodious stage, four by five inches in dimensions. The stage has a recessed circular opening one and three quarter inches in diameter, holding a removable glass disk, for which suitable dishes can be substituted for dissecting in fluids. Removable spring clips are provided for retaining objects under observation. Very rare dissecting microscope(WORKING CONDICTION) While this instrument is unsigned by the maker. This form of dissecting-preparation microscope was designed and produced by the Parisian optician Constant Verick beginning in the 1870's. The mechanisms and movements used on this microscope are reminiscent to those that originally appeared in the earlier Raspail type simple microscope; in this case, the older type has been modified with the incorporation of wooden hand-rests and draws for the lenses and accessories. Antique JJ Bausch Excelsior 1874 pocket and dissecting microscope Serial# 14 RARE! This is an extremely rare low serial numbered model. SERIAL# 14. I believe there may be a few missing parts lost over time. The microscope shows nice patina and age appropriate wear and also has a name of a previous owner lightly carved into the wood case(top and side with name“Tarbox” There is a chip out of the top side portion of the box as can be seen in the photos and the wood box shows some age cracks here and there as appropriate for the age of this antique scientific instrument. Please see photos for item description. This is one of a few of the earliest production models known to exist as the serial number is 14. The other known early serial numbered examples appear to be in Harvard and Yale University collections and museums. THE REICHERT DISSECTING MICROSCOPE PICTURED IS IN EXCELLENT OPERATING CONDITION. THE FOCUSER IS SMOOTH AND PRECISE. THE HORIZONTAL ARM MOVEMENTS ARE SMOOTH AND EASY. THE 2 ORIGINAL REICHERT MAGNIFIERS ARE IN EXCELLENT OPTICAL CONDITION. THE THIRD MAGNIFIER WHICH WILL FIT THE SMALLER PORT OF THE PRIMARY ARM IS A B& L 12 X MAGNIFIER WHICH I INCLUDED WITH THE UNIT. IT APPEARS TO HAVE A SCUFF MARK ON THE INSIDE OF THE UPPER ELEMENT. THE WOODEN ARM RESTS ARE IN VERY NICE CONDITION EXCEPT FOR A SMALL CHIP AT TH BASE OF THE LEFT ARM REST. The beveled glass plate in pristine and has no chips or other marks. The mirror is two sided and both sides are fine. MECHANICS: Smooth and flawless. BODY: Chrome stanchion is excellent and without flaws. The base paint has some wear marks and pint loss smaller than an eraser head on one leg otherwise fine. CASE: Intact with modest use marks. This is altogether a beautiful example of Bausch& Lombs early microscope. Perfect for the desk top aficionado or collector. Shipping is $12.00 when bought within the US.
