3 Amos Topping Microscope Slides, Polariscope, Various Hairs
A trio of microscope slides by the highly regarded professional maker Amos Topping(1831-1900) Topping's handwriting is distinctive. Specimens are various types of hairs. Grey Human Hair" glows in a variety of colors when viewed through crossed polarizing filters(polariscope) see image 2. It is reasonable to assume that Amos turned to his own head for these clippings. Hairs of Leaf" also make beautiful polariscope objects(see image 3) Hairs of Mouse" are naturally pigmented. And are unexceptional under crossed polars. Topping prepared these specimens for use as"tests" in that mouse hair has fine lines in it, and serves as a test of the quality of microscope lenses and microscopist's eyesight.
