A trio of microscope slides by the highly regarded professional maker Amos Topping(1831-1900) Topping's handwriting is distinctive. Specimens are various types of hairs. Grey Human Hair" glows in a variety of colors when viewed through crossed polarizing filters(polariscope) see image 2. It is reasonable to assume that Amos turned to his own head for these clippings. Hairs of Leaf" also make beautiful polariscope objects(see image 3) Hairs of Mouse" are naturally pigmented. And are unexceptional under crossed polars. Diatomaceae Polariscope Microscope Slides
DIATOMACEAE POLARISCOPE MICROSCOPIC SLIDES A set of diatomaceae polariscope microscopic slides. The preparator probably S. Waller. This is a set of nine( 9) slides that area thick and heavy. Prepared with exquisite detail and perfection. Some of the slides are labeled: Diatomaceae- various locations around the world, Diatomaceae Polycystina, Diatomaceae New Zealand, Diatomaceae Nova Scotia, Diatomaceae France, Diatomaceae Maryland USA, Diatomaceae Shale see images. The preparations have a black circle in the center of the slide with the specimen inside and a square of brown"raised coating or wax" around the circle. Each slide label has the letters"S" in one corner and"CB" in another corner- see image. There is one( 1) slide that has been broken at the bottom and the slide label is still holding it in place. An ... moreattempt to repair the slide at some point was made but the slide is still intact and does not affect the specimen- see image of slides in box. Very precise preparations. The slide labels appear to be neatly"hand written" The slides are in a black slide box labeled Microscopical Preparations embossed in gold lettering. The slide box measures 4 1/2"L x 3 3/4"W x 1 1/4"D and is opened by placing a finger into a hole in one( 1) end of the box and push the box open- see image. A unusual set of Diatomaceae polariscope slides!
