Looking at the front through the hole there is a divider with a mirror on each side that angles toward the front corner. In the top center is a non magnetic metal pointed spike sticking up which has me baffled as well. 6.5" Tall x 6" wide x 3.5" deep. Item is used and sold as is. Antique CAMBRIDGE SCIENTIFIC INSTRUMENT CO. Battery-Type Electrical Apparatus
This is a Circa 1900-1910 Battery-Type Electrical Device that was Manufactured by the CAMBRIDGE SCIENTIFIC INSTRUMENT CO. LTD.Cambridge. England) It measures approximately 9.5" tall, 9" wide and 4.25" deep, and is mostly constructed of Oak( wood, Brass, a Bakelite( Top, and brass and copper fittings and lining. The wood has been so permeated by chemical solutions( thru the century, that it has created a very dark patina to the wood overall. Stamped into the top of the lid is"The Cambridge Scientific Instrument Co. Ltd. England. No. 2539, No. 476" and the 3 thumb screw brass terminals, starting with the upper left one, are stamped"B1" B2" and"G2" The two large, square brass posts are stamped"5 OHMS-C1"left one) and the other is"5 OHMS-P2" There are no other markings, inside ... moreor out, but everything seems to be there, including the Bakelite"cork" in the top. Note also that the tallest brass rod/knob on the device can be pulled up and down while the top is in place. The interior of the box is sheathed in copper with soldered corners. We estimate its age based on the fact that the firm was not formed until 1881, and changed its name to Cambridge& Paul Instrument Co. in 1920. That and the overall look of the instrument and the materials with which it is contructed, would suggest a ca 1900 date, plus or minus 10 years. The apparatus weighs exactly 10 pounds. These old instruments were used in a university classroom laboratory setting to demonstrate the principles of electricity. I am not quite sure to the exact function of this piece or even what its called but. It is pretty neat. It appears to provide a path for electricity to flow into a desired object but, I am not really sure. This piece measures approximately 9 1/4 inches tall, the base measures approximately 12 inches by 4 inches. RARE Antique EIMER & AMEND SCIENTIFIC APPARATUS & CHEMICALS Set Pat'd 1901
This is an amazing and RARE find! This is a complete set by Eimer& Amend Scientific Apparatus& Chemicals Co. Apparatus for the Quantitative Estimation of Hydrogen Sulphide in Illuminating Gas" Patented December 10, 1901. The United Gas Improvement Co. Philadelphia. It is completely original with all the fixtures. Chemicals, tubing, beautiful glass burette, glass bottles, leveling bulb, wood stand& tube of? The burette is beautifully etched in script"The United Gas Improvement Co. Patented Dec 10th, 1900" The labels are all original. There are to brass labels on the top of the box and one on the inside door. On the top, there is also a label from the University of California. All this comes in the original and beautiful in it's own right, box which was made to specifically house all these pieces. It has pivoting ... morewood braces to secure items in place. This is a truly a fabulous set! The issues I see are- there are some scrapes and a couple scratches on the exterior of the box. The key for the box is not original and tends to be a little hard to work, the best I can tell there are a couple missing items- a stopper for the top of the burette, a glass cock for the lower stop and a little hook or something where the base for the leveling bulb attaches to the stand. Please see pictures for exactly what you will receive and condition. This will be shipped with extreme care! You will not be disappointed in this wonderful piece of history!
