This is one of the more rare Bausch& Lomb American Type microscope models. It was only manufactured over just a brief 3-year period from 1889 to 1891. The featured instrument is very similar in design to the B&L“The Model” microscope. But it lacks the rack and pinion focus mechanism and is built upon a horseshoe shaped foot with rectangular pillars instead of the“Y”shaped foot with round pillars that characterized“The Model. This instrument bears the name of the manufacturer in fancy script on the top rear face of the circular stage. Bausch& Lomb Optical Co. Please see the accompanying close-up image of this inscription) However, this instrument does not bear a typical serial number. For some unknown reason, Bausch& Lomb did not inscribe serial numbers on their earlier microscopes. I'm not sure what it is. But it sure is a good one! I will do my best to describe it. I HAVE SINCE BEEN TOLD BY A FELLOW E-BAYER THAT THIS IS TO MAKE DRY ICE PATTIES. CARBON DIOXIDE GOES IN AT HIGH PRESSURE TO MAKE DRY ICE. The label says C.L. Hill Mfg. Co. Inc. Cranford New Jersey. Caution wear goggles and gloves. It appears to be some sort of gas burner. With a brass valve inside, marked 1008 3000 on the bottom. This item weighs about 9.5 lbs. It is about 8" tall and about 6" across and has a flanged base with 6 holes so it can be securely mounted. It is likely made of plated brass, plated steel, or even stainless steel. There are some small spots of rust or other staining. The lid has an adjustable hinge and has a heavy-duty latch/handle. This is a Circa 1900-1910 Battery-Type Electrical Device that was Manufactured by the CAMBRIDGE SCIENTIFIC INSTRUMENT CO. LTD.Cambridge. England) It measures approximately 9.5" tall, 9" wide and 4.25" deep, and is mostly constructed of Oak( wood, Brass, a Bakelite( Top, and brass and copper fittings and lining. The wood has been so permeated by chemical solutions( thru the century, that it has created a very dark patina to the wood overall. Stamped into the top of the lid is"The Cambridge Scientific Instrument Co. Ltd. England. No. 2539, No. 476" and the 3 thumb screw brass terminals, starting with the upper left one, are stamped"B1" B2" and"G2" The two large, square brass posts are stamped"5 OHMS-C1"left one) and the other is"5 OHMS-P2" There are no other markings, inside ... moreor out, but everything seems to be there, including the Bakelite"cork" in the top. Note also that the tallest brass rod/knob on the device can be pulled up and down while the top is in place. The interior of the box is sheathed in copper with soldered corners. We estimate its age based on the fact that the firm was not formed until 1881, and changed its name to Cambridge& Paul Instrument Co. in 1920. That and the overall look of the instrument and the materials with which it is contructed, would suggest a ca 1900 date, plus or minus 10 years. The apparatus weighs exactly 10 pounds. A polarimeter is a scientific instrument used to measure theangle of rotation caused by passing polarized light through an optically activesubstance. A saccharimeter is a form of polarimeter for measuring the concentration of sugar solutions and is used most often in the sugar industry for determining the qualityof both the juice from sugar cane and the refined sucrose. This instrument is 19-1/4" long. Black rail and silver colored metal hardware, a beautiful black and green central tube, a small measuring scale at one end, and lots of dials and adjustable eyepieces. It has a door in the round cylinder that was meant to take another cylinder, most ... morelikely containing the material to be tested. Much of it is not magnetic, although I am not sure of the material. The bottom has a threaded hole that I think was meant to receive a tripod. There is a small round paper tag on it that says"Dennison" most likely the university, and a sticker inside the box that says"University of Cincinnati" with a number. The hardwood box is dovetailed, has antique hardware, is 20-3/8" long, 5-3/4" wide and 4" high, and has several compartments made by wood partitions screwed to the box from the outside. No key. You now know as much as I do! I have no idea what pieces may be missing. But it is a great conversation piece! Condition: The box has one significant split(see last photo) and a marred finish. But is solid and well made. The instrument itself needs cleaned and polished, and the green/black finish on the tube has marks and scratches on it. I do not know how or if it works.
