Additionally it is a Monocular Compound Achromatic Brass Microscope. The bottom of the body tube has two screw on and off lenses for adjustment of magnification. It features a bull's eye lens. The original Mahogony wood box, glass plates, and a period tweezer. It is 9" tall fully extended and has a 2 3/4" bottom diameter. I did clean up all the lens and provide a basic clean-up on the entire microscope with Windex only. Since it is unmarked. I was able to access a multitude of pictures and info concerning French Drum Microscopes, and I will share my research with you. I will provide four manufacturers' or instances of this type of microscope, to provide dating and provenance: 1. Charles Chevalier lived from 1804 to 1859. His 1848 microscope which can be found on Ebay. Is functionally similar to the instrument being offered, though not as sophisticated as far as features, and operational knob control. Since he worked through 1959, it was very possible that he added the features seen as he progressed from 1848 to 1959. 2. Construction No. 3 by Lerebours& Secretan. Ca1839-1855(designed and described by Lerebours alone in 1839 but not manufactured till 1855) Monocular Compound Achromatic Brass Microscope, height 10 1/5" Rack-and-pinion focusing, one bull's eye lens. It included a Mahogany wood box. This unit can be seen on the Internet and was valued at between $1,000- $2,000.00. 3. French Drum Microscope ca1865. Trade label of James Foster Jr. Mathematical& Philosophical Instrument Maker, Cinncinnati Ohio. This microscope can also be found on the Internet, and is is funtionally equivalent to the instrument being offered. For Auction. From my own collection of stuff, one optician's antique lens set in the original leather case. From the M. Wiseman Co. Ltd one of the great names in British Optical History. Founded in England in 1898 M. Wiseman was a leader in the optical industry producing scientific instruments and eventually frames. M. Wiseman products are on display at the British Optical Association Museum in London. England. Now, here is an example you can display in your own collection. The leather case interior and exterior is in wonderful condition for it's age and the clasps have a nice patina. Approximate measurements of the case are 5 7/8 inches x 2 3/4 inches by 3/4 inch high.The hand held tools are also in great condition, handles good and lenses perfect. Antique Cambridge Scientific Instruments Aneroid Barometer
Ever find yourself wondering what Charles Darwin's youngest son did with himself? Well now you know: This is one of his early 10" barometers with a lovely ceramic dial. Sadly the glass is cracked but it DOES seem to be working. And it is thick flat glass which is easier to replace than thin domed glass. It is also just under the 2 kilos weight unpacked. Which means postage outside the Ireland and UK(where it can be sent by GLS courier quite reasonably) could be a little bit frightening. Contact me before bidding if you are elsewhere and we will see what we can work out. Taking that broken glass out might get it far enough down to pack under 2 kilos and I would certainly be happy to attempt it. Imported and distributed by Ogilvy& Co. 18 Bloomsbury Square. London. The other name on the box is Brady& Martin, Newcastle on Tyne who were the cabinet makers. This is not a toy but a heavy and extremely high quality laboratory instrument. It sits in its own purpose made box which has a hinged lockable door standing 34 cms high x 22 x 19. There are some accessories inside but not the complete set as when it was new. The condition is superb and seems to be totally intact so is obviously in working order. Antique Measures were used by a person called a SEALER( A person who would check to make sure that people were getting what they paid for) Whether it be the general store. Peddlers, anyone selling measurable products to the public. This sealer would have an office assigned to him with a specific layout. He would have scales, weights, measures for liquids, solids, as well as lengths. He would be responsible to make sure patrons were not being cheated by unscrupulous merchants. That being said this was his MEASURES KIT for liquids. The VESSELS were made out of brushed nickle. The top had to be smooth so that a" slicker" a glass cover almost like a magnifying glass could be put on top. This is also present in the kit and attaches to the bottom. There was also a glass cylinder beaker to measure smaller amounts up to 2 oz'as well. ... morePresent and has all the measurements etched right into the glass) The measures are 3 sizes Quart, Pint and 1/2 Pint these are inscribed on the vessels, and signed W.L. E. Gurley Troy NY and have beautiful tankard type handles. The bottom of the Measures look like a wagon wheel with 6 spokes the handbook called these strengthening ribs! The Wooden case is beautifully dovetailed. Has brass hinges, latches and key hole(no key is present) The case has some scratches and dings but is structurally sound, the leather strap is missing except on the sides where it was attached. See photo's) The original nameplate is present. The dimensions of the case are 11" x 8 3/4 x 7" so it would have been quite portable. I found a handbook posted online named A handbook for the use of sealers for weights and measures 1912 by W@LE Gurley, Back in 1912 the handbook shows the price of this kit at $20.00. In today's money we are talking $500-600 quite a hefty sum. So you know this man had some clout as this was just one of his many tools. Rare Antique Milvay Scientific Instruments Chicago Apparatus Co Electricity Old
Here we have an antique scientific device from Milvay Scientific Instruments and Chicago Apparatus Co. I'm not sure what this device is used for even after some time of trying to figure it out. I've decided to part ways with it from my collection. From what I can see the glass cylinder looks to have housed some type of fluid that would cause for this to act as a battery and create an electrical charge that could be manipulated with the wand. This is all simply a hypothesis of mine and if you do know what it is for I would love to know. Shipping for this will be on the expensive side as it is obviously fragile and will most likely require multiple boxes and be shipped in pieces. As you can see from the photos it seems that the"wand" is missing it's handle. Also there is a crack in the glass cylinder and the piece is held ... morewith tape. RAY FISH SKIN STORAGE BOX EARLY GEORGIAN c1750S SCIENTIFIC INSTRUMENTS ANTIQUE
This is for a nice early storage box that dates to around the 1750s. It has a fine ray skin cover that is much finer than shagreen and it has its original brass hook catches at the front which are a very definite early shape. The lid is hinged and the inside is missing but im guessing it would have held a scientific tool. The box is in excellent condition with minor wear the the outside at the edges only and the underside of the lid has its black silk linning which is very worn. Antique Brass Microscope 19th Century Ernst Leitz Wetzlar Scientific Instruments
A brass microscope marked E. Ernst) Leitz. Wetzlar, No. 50057, late 19th century with original case stamped with the same number. I would describe it as in good original condition, the lacquer is not rubbed through but is starting to slightly degrade in some areas. This is not my field of expertise so it is not tested, but it is in undamaged mechanical condition. The case is sound but the lock is missing and has a small loss where someone has opened it without a key, there are a few vacant holes so maybe there is not a full set of accessories. Antique Liverpool Scientific Instruments Cased Set Fuel Measuring Rods Customs
An interesting cased set of 19th century collapsible boxwood and brass fuel measuring rods. Probably made for customs and excise use. They are marked A. Casartelli, 54 Old Street, Liverpool. They are in good condition but the brass junction is missing to one section, comes with 2 associated spare rods, so a repair could be made using these pieces. They appear to be calibrated on one side in imperial gallons and on the other inches. The heavy leather case is in good condition but the tongue loop is detached on one side. Antique Brass 19th Century Scientific Engineering Technical Drawing Instruments
A small set of mahogany cased mid 19th century drawing instruments. C1850, case aprox. 19 X 10 cms. These are in retail condition, the case has been repaired where necessary and the instruments cleaned but not lacquered. Although these are unmarked they are of superior quality, the velvet lined case is not veneered but made from solid, well figured Cuban or Spanish timber. The set contains a good sector, scale rule and an ebony parallel, I think it is lacking a ruling pen. Excellent condition, minor knocks rubs and scratches. Free UK postage. This is on purpose so that you can lift the earth. Disengaging it from the arm gear, so you can turn the earth freely without having to move the arm. Notice how the sun is slightly offset from the center post? That is scientifically accurate. This is a feature that adds value to the piece. More recent planetariums from the 40s and 50s don't include this feature. The major attraction to the piece is the fact that the moon rotates around the earth as the earth moves around the sun. This requires more gearing than a lot of planetariums offer. Even brand new planetariums sold today charge about 50% more than planetariums that don't offer this feature. There are a lot of condition problems with this piece. Unfortunately. It is almost certainly the oldest model I've seen. That's both good and bad. Almost every Ideal Planetarium I've seen on the internet had a sun in nearly perfect condition. One was described as having a small dent, but that was the worst flaw.
