Victorian Microscope Slide Set, Antique, Rare Storage Boxes Shaped Like Books
Antique. Victorian Microscope Slide Set Boxes Shaped Like Books with Latches Victorian Era ~ You are bidding on what looks like two. Leather volumes, but what is in reality an early microscope slide set. The inside is lined with red velvet and the slide holders are numbered. This is a very unique holder which fits nicely on a bookshelf. Outside of boxes are made to resemble marble pages, each book has a latch that when pressed opens the boxes. On one of the boxes the lid has detached. This is a very old set. Corners are slightly bumped and covers are rubbed. This would make a great gift for anyone who loves Victorian Era scientific instruments and ephemera. Each volume of slides is approximately 8" x 11"

This is one of the most unique items I've ever come across in my business as an estate liquidator. This is a solid mahogany lab case which would've been used back in the very early 1900's. Based on some of the design elements it appears that this case would have been used to store slides for a microscope. But. It is so well made and so functional that today it can be used to hold anything- money, jewelry, valuables; just about anything. The lid flips open to reveal a top storage area- the divider lifts out. Then there's a hatch that runs about 2/3 up the right side- open the hatch to reveal a nice little storage area. When the hatch is open you can then swing out 4 small drawers/ storage compartments. These compartments will only swing out when the hatch is open. The hatch closes tightly to keep the compartments firmly in ... moreplace. The dividers in each compartment are all original- see photos. All of the hardware- pulls. Hinges, top handle, etc- are solid brass and all original. Hinges work well. Pictures tell the story but in nice condition overall, some imperfections in the mirror, as happens over time. The wood is in very nice shape…great piece for display and very collectible. I believe this dates to the early part of the 20th century. The wood box is 6 3/4 inches long x 2 7/8 inches wide x 2 1/2 inches tall. It has brass latches. The number 84 is written on inside of lid. The microscope has an adjustable mirror to focus the light. It is 6 1/4 inches unextended and fully extended is close to 8 inches. There are no slides with the microscope. So we can't tell if it actually works properly. We can see light through the opening when the mirror is adjusted and magnification seems to increase as it extends. It marked Made in France on the side. 1. The slides are a smaller size, most of the slides measure 2 1/4" L X 3/4" wide, and other slides measure a bit larger. The paper wrapping is not one particular preparator or style, but many. The paper wrapping of each slide is in excellent condition. The slides are mostly insect or plant specimens. The case has six(6) removable slide trays and six(6)slide slots per tray. The front of the case will fold down so the slide trays can be easily accessible and has two(2) C" clips to secure the case closed. I bought this at a Radio Swap in Michigan about 6 years ago, because of its excellent condition and impressive look. I can tell you what I know. Engraved on one of the feet is Bausch& Lomb Optical Co. Rochester, N.Y. On the base at the top rear is stamped 36832. The base appears to be Solid Brass with some kind of Bone or Ivory Locking Adjustment Arm/Handle. It has 3 Objective Lens, which are marked(1) 1mm, 1/12, 1.32 N.A. 160.0mm Tube Length, 2) 2/3, 0.24 N.A. 160.0mm Tube Length, and(3) 4mm, 0.65, 43x, 2/3. The Microscope is stamped Pat. Feb. 16. 1897. There 2 Eye Pieces which are marked 1. The Objective Lens have Storage Containers, with the size stamped on top, and seem to ... morematch the lens. Antique Microscopic Slide Cabinet, Circa 1800's
ANTIQUE MICROSCOPIC SLIDE CABINET. CIRCA 1800's Microscopic slide cabinets were a unique cabinet to catalog and store treasured slides for easy retrieval. The cabinet itself was designed to be a unique storage system that would be found in a nice library or laboratory environment. It would house microscopic slides that would be available for demonstration or a conversation piece for interested quests or colleagues. The cabinet was often constructed from heavy. Strong and durable wood, perhaps mahogany or cherry, many cabinets with ornate carvings and immaculate detail. Brass handles, locks and keys would often accent the cabinet. The drawers may have alabaster pulls to accent the cabinet finish and design. Often the drawer pulls may be carved wooden pulls that off set the wood finish. Some of the cabinets had velvet- lined drawers, which ... moreadded a delicate, sharp look for the microscope slides to rest on in the drawer itself. This wooden microscopic slide cabinet is a very heavy, well constructed cabinet, measuring 17 1/2" H x 17" W x 11 1/2" D. It has 29 drawers with carved wooden pulls, some are knob-like and a few that are pin-wheel shaped that were carved to replace the pulls that have been lost over time. Unique design. There is a working lock on the door of the cabinet with the key- see image. There is a large drawer in the base of the cabinet for storage of larger items- see image. The top of the cabinet has a brass decorative carrying handle- see image. The cabinet has a storage capacity of about 800 plus slides. The overall finish on the cabinet is in good condition and can be polished. The glass does not have any cracks. The slides in one of the images are placed in the drawer for demonstration and are not for sale. The mahogany box measures 9 3/8” x 8 5/8” x 6 3/4” and weighs 11 lbs. 4 oz, unpacked. The box has some dovetails and has very heavy brass fittings, including a folding handle. This is the optical work-horse of the mid-last century for capturing tiny barely perceptible measurements from old mechanical metrology experiments. If you're browsing an article with photos from the 40's or 50's where an autocollimator is being used to detect a tiny deflection. Then the photos more likely than not show the Aminco Tuckerman at work. This unit is in exceptionally good condition with uncommonly clean optics showing no difficulty focusing. Very large antique Microscope case measuring 16 1/2" tall by 14 1/2" wide and 8 1/2" deep. The wood appears to be mahogany and it clearly was a production case. Fancy hardware on the pulls and hinges suggest pre 1940's. The handle on top as well as two pulls mounted on the front are clearly later. The inside support for the top handle is Japanned copper again suggesting pre 1940's construction. Below the drawers is a swinging vial holder that easily lifts out but has a round bottom so its not something you could set on a tabletop. This is a Circa 1900-1910 Battery-Type Electrical Device that was Manufactured by the CAMBRIDGE SCIENTIFIC INSTRUMENT CO. LTD.Cambridge. England) It measures approximately 9.5" tall, 9" wide and 4.25" deep, and is mostly constructed of Oak( wood, Brass, a Bakelite( Top, and brass and copper fittings and lining. The wood has been so permeated by chemical solutions( thru the century, that it has created a very dark patina to the wood overall. Stamped into the top of the lid is"The Cambridge Scientific Instrument Co. Ltd. England. No. 2539, No. 476" and the 3 thumb screw brass terminals, starting with the upper left one, are stamped"B1" B2" and"G2" The two large, square brass posts are stamped"5 OHMS-C1"left one) and the other is"5 OHMS-P2" There are no other markings, inside ... moreor out, but everything seems to be there, including the Bakelite"cork" in the top. Note also that the tallest brass rod/knob on the device can be pulled up and down while the top is in place. The interior of the box is sheathed in copper with soldered corners. We estimate its age based on the fact that the firm was not formed until 1881, and changed its name to Cambridge& Paul Instrument Co. in 1920. That and the overall look of the instrument and the materials with which it is contructed, would suggest a ca 1900 date, plus or minus 10 years. The apparatus weighs exactly 10 pounds. 1763 Antique Print of a Double Reflecting Microscope
The print is a copperplate engraving printed on laid paper in 1763. The sheet measures 9 X 5 inches and is in good condition aside from wear& age toning along the edges and foxing spots The image is titled"The Double Reflecting Microscope. It is inscribed in the lower right"T. Jefferys sculp. This is the name of the engraver. It is inscribed across the top"facing page 2102. Plate CLXXIV. The print comes from"A New and Complete Dictionary of Arts and Sciences Comprehending All the Branches of Useful Knowledge. By A Society of Gentlemen, published in London, by W. Owen at Homer's Head in Fleet Street, in 1763. There is nothing printed on the reverse side. The print is shown on a black background in order to show the edges of the sheet. Parallel lines visible when the paper is held to light. The lines are usually a few millimeters apart. Laid paper is a type of paper having a ribbed texture imparted by the manufacturing process. It use was diminished by the 1790's by the introduction of wove paper(which eliminated the ribbed lines for a smoother printing surface. A copperplate engraving is an intaglio process. I.e. it is the grooves, rather than the raised portions that are inked. The steps are: 1. A drawing is cut into a copper plate using a burin, a metal tool with a sharp point, to remove the metal and create the lines of the drawing. 2. Ink is applied to the plate with a dabber or roller, and forced into the grooves. 3. The surface is cleaned with soft muslin. 4. A sheet of paper is laid over the plate. 5. The plate and paper are passed through a rolling press that applies pressure and forces the paper into the grooves to pick
