Antique jug handle 1917 Bausch & Lomb Microscope
1917 Jug handle Bausch& Lomb microscope. Serial number on eyepiece tube is 125673. Which would correspond to a 1917 manufacture date. Course and fine focus mechanisms move smoothly and focus to a crystal-clear view. Optics are clear and sharp with great color and contrast. The plano-concave mirror is excellent on both sides. The instrument is finished in lacquered brass and painted black brass. The two objectives are engraved with Bausch& Lomb and the following: 4 mm 0.85 and 16 mm 0.25 N.A. Two metal objective containers painted black and labeled with 4 mm and 16 mm(corresponding to objectives) The eyepiece is 10X. Dovetailed, wooden case without lock, but with clasp. Box interior has had repairs. This microscope is a functional, very beautiful piece of scientific history.

Antique Bausch & Lomb Microscope Pat. Feb 16 1897 Brass 2 Lenses No 177 Optical
You are bidding on this Antique Brass Bausch& Lomb Optical Co. Microscope with 2 lenses. It measures about 11 1/2 inches high when adjusted all the way down. Marked on the back knob is Pat. Feb 16 1897. On the eyepiece lens top is 7.5& in a triangle B-L Z S. The eyepiece is in very good condition. Both sides of the bottom mirror look fine. There are some marks and scratches on the brass throughout but it looks pretty good. The part that turns and the lenses screw into has a black paint coating on top of the brass. The black is flaking off in spots. The one lens is marked 1/6 and that's it. The other brass lens has"Bausch& Lomb Optical Co Rochester N.Y. 16mm 0.25 N.A. The lenses need lightly cleaned. The slide clips are ok. As is the deck(shows some wear) There is the number 177 on the black cast iron bottom(underneath) ... moreThe tilt works well. 1763 Antique Print of a Chemistry Laboratory Furnace
The print is a copperplate engraving printed on laid paper in 1763. The sheet measures 9 X 5 inches and is in good condition aside from foxing spots and light age toning. The image is titled"The Furnace of the Portable Laboratory. It is inscribed in the lower right"T. Jefferys sculp. This is the name of the engraver. It is inscribed across the top"Facing page 1864. Plate CLI. The print comes from"A New and Complete Dictionary of Arts and Sciences Comprehending All the Branches of Useful Knowledge. By A Society of Gentlemen, published in London, by W. Owen at Homer's Head in Fleet Street, in 1763. There is nothing printed on the reverse side. The print is shown on a black background in order to show the edges of the sheet. Parallel lines visible when the paper is held to light. The lines are usually a few millimeters apart. Laid paper is a type of paper having a ribbed texture imparted by the manufacturing process. It use was diminished by the 1790's by the introduction of wove paper(which eliminated the ribbed lines for a smoother printing surface. A copperplate engraving is an intaglio process. I.e. it is the grooves, rather than the raised portions that are inked. The steps are: 1. A drawing is cut into a copper plate using a burin, a metal tool with a sharp point, to remove the metal and create the lines of the drawing. 2. Ink is applied to the plate with a dabber or roller, and forced into the grooves. 3. The surface is cleaned with soft muslin. 4. A sheet of paper is laid over the plate. 5. 600+ 1890s-1906 Wood Boxed Antique American Microscopic Prepared Specimen Slides
For your consideration is a collection of over 600 antique boxed microscopic prepared specimen slides. First off. I do not know anything about this collection recently purchased at an estate auction. That being said, I have done the very best I know how to describe what is here, but a further note is warranted- much of the handwriting is difficult to read. The collection consists of 25 antique wood boxes with an approximate count of 607. Although two of the boxes do not have slides in them. each is supposed to hold at least 26 slides) some of the boxes currently store more than that count-example- two boxes have 40+, several boxes count over 30, and a few under 26, and the like) There are several boxes that have a pencil notation on the end stating what is in the box. After a brief look, it would appear that is mostly correct, but again, ... morethe writing is difficult to deciper. All of the slides are identified in English as to what the specimen is which is why it is believed they originated in the United States. Only a few of the slides are dated and I did not see any year date past 1906 or anything earlier then 1894. Of those that are dated, more are from the 19th century specifically 1894 with the other year date(s) of 1902 and 1906. Some of the slides are identified with a proper name and/or institution. If during the course of the auction we find other noteworthy information or biographical sketches of the others. We will add those findings to the listing. In 1894, Mel T. Cook was elected Head of the Biology/Botanical Department of Depauw University at Indiana. From the reading online, Cook had some impressive credentials. Among other varied credentials, E.M. Wilcox along with F.D. Heald and Venus W.Pool wrote a book or paper in 1909 entitled, The Life History of Parasitism of Diplidia Zeue" Here is a partial list of what was inscribed on the end of the boxes that had notations. Antique Leitz Wetzlar Brass Microscope with Parallel linkage No 5349
This microscope belonged to my father. What he did with it. I couldn't say. He wasn't a doctor, and actually, it was just stored away. I never saw him use it. It is in very nice condition. The brass table for slides has one place on the right side where the paint is off it in about a 1/8" area. The back of the base has some marks, something sticky that is on the paint. I didn't want to chance trying to clean them with a solvent. The lenses are all good. The fine adjustment mechanism works smoothly and has no play. The rotating disc under the table clicks in solidly to it's detents, and the mirror moves smoothly. It is certainly a nicely made instrument. I believe this style would have been considered a traveling microscope, if I am reading their history correctly. Another one like this on EBay listed it as 1908. I couldn't ... moresay for sure what year this one is. The number on the table is 5349.

This is one beautiful in excellent condition very old micriscope. All lenses are clean and clear. Including the mirror. No signs of damage, misuse or abuse. All functions work as brand new. This must be from the 18 hundreds. I know very little about antique microscopes as I am a machinist and can tell you this is a machinist's work of art. There is a removable compartment under the table that seems to facilitate some kind of reservoir for lab specimen viewing. It slides in and out on a dovetail. Hopefully the pictures can tell you more than I can. The barrel is engraved in script, E. Hartnack, Place Dauphine,21, Paris. I would love to keep it myself but it is on consignment and so it has to go to a real Scientist, Doctor or some medical instrument collector. Anyhow, thanks for looking and maybe even buying.

R&J BECK ANTIQUE MICROSCOPE, LONDON W. BOSCH & LOMB OPTICS-
800x600 This is the nicest old microscope that we have ever come across. It is a very old(we think c.1880’s) serial#4777 R&J Beck microscope from London. England and it comes with its original(and beautiful) fitted wooden box, four other lens attachments besides the one on the scope, special oil, brass container and another small glass bottle. The microscope is solid metal with a brass body and a heavy cast metal base. The scope is in excellent condition but the focusing gear slips and will no move the lens mount up and down. I was told that this was a relatively easy fix for an instrument repair person. The optics appears to all be Bosch& Lomb and this is stamped on the bottom of the scope and on one of the brass tubes in the case. The condition is very good and the scope would be spectacular if it was cleaned up. This is certainly ... morethe most vintage microscope we have ever had. It deserves to be in a fine scientific instrument collection! ABOUT THE MANUFACTURER– R& J BECK: The firm that was ultimately to become R& J Beck was founded by James Smith(1789– 1870) who was a very talented mathematical instrument maker. It was rather late in his life. At age 50, when he established himself in business in 1839 in London. From 1839 to 1847, his business was located at 50 Ironmonger Row, Old Street, London. Smith received the assistance of the famous lens maker, J.J. Lister, in the design of his 1inch, ½ inch and ¼ inch objective lenses used on his microscopes. Smith also made microscopes for Lister’s many clients. In 1840, Stand Number 41 went to Lister himself and in 1841 Stand Number 43 was sold to the Microscopical Society of London. In addition, one of Smith’s microscopes found its way into the hands of the famous naturalist, Charles Darwin. A nephew of J. J. Lister was Richard Beck(1827– 1866) Who was sent by Lister as an apprentice to Smith in 1846. One year later(in 1847) Beck was taken into partnership with Smith, and the firm was called“Smith& Beck. What makes this instrument so valuable is condition and the fact that it has been stamped with a“USSR occupied” label that has survived the last 50 years. This is an antique drum microscope sold by J. Lizars. Themicroscope is in excellent condition as shown in the photos. It is functionalas well. Although no slides are included with this lot. I inserted a piece ofpaper with printing on it and shown a flashlight at the mirror. Looking throughthe eyepiece and adjusting the focal length I was able to sharply focus on theprinted letters.
