2 Wood Darning Eggs~Robin Egg Blue Original Paint
Listing all of my small collection of antique and vintage darning eggs. I don't sew but just like the look and feel of these things. All sewing marks on the eggs are vintage. Too! 2 x pretty blue ~ Original paint. Happy to combine as there will likely be savings on postage(wait for invoice) Also some buttons listed. THERE WAS A TIME when no proper household would be without at least one. As common as sadirons and buttonhooks. They were regularly used by women, often by children, occasionally by men. And, although they came in a seemingly infinite number of shapes, sizes and materials, every one had the same function- to hold fabric taut while being darned. They are stocking darners(or darning eggs, balls, bells, spools, mushrooms) once highly esteemed in the days of the"use it up, wear it out- make do, or do without" society ... morethat has been shunted aside in today's disposable one. Yet this humble tool is emerging again as a fascinating, attractive and highly sought-after collectible. A 19th-century instruction manual for teachers describes the virtues of darning as part of the American public-school curriculum: If wisely taught. It develops the thrifty dispositions and habits of neatness, cleanliness, order, management and industry. Darners were made from nearly every conceivable material, most commonly wood, as well as stag horn, mother-of-pearl, porcelain, ceramic, celluloid, plastic, Bakelite, papier-mache, ivory, brass, aluminum and tin.

This lot has 1 3" long black Darning egg that is in good condition. 1 Mending Knob 7" long and 2 old dry Gourds she used for darning. The Grand kinds said their mother told them she liked the Gourds better than the other item for making repairs. This auction is for 3 vintage wood sock darners Including from front to back: a large(7" long) dark stained one that was turned in one piece. Back left is a light stained one with metal band. It is 4-1/4" long. And finally. An interesting chubby one with turning grooves on the body and the handle. This one is 4-5/8" long. It does show lots of use and has scratches and finish wear, but I believe it's made of pine(a soft wood) instead of maple(a hard wood) and would scuff more easily.
