Description Wonderful antique bone( cattle- Bovine species) small sewing winding or netting clamp. Which has been deeply carved with birds and butterflies, and so typical of Cantonese export carving of the early 19th century. AGE The clamp dates to the middle of the 19th century. Circa 1850's. SIZE The clamp measures 10.5cm(4" high. 3cm(1¼" deep and 0.5cm(¼" wide. CONDITION The clamp is in very good condition for considerable age. With no damage to the bone, although there would have been two disks to the winder section and only one remain. Also i think there would have been a small finial to the top of the clamp(where small hole is drilled) and this is missing. Please refer to the above photographs for details of condition. Thimble, awl, bobbin, crochet needle, handle, and a case to hold the bobbin and needle. Each pieces fits perfectly in the carved bone case. Overall condition of the tools is very good. Some discoloration on the blade of the scissor. Can possibly be polished out. Overall condition of the case is very good, one spot of discoloration on the top and 2 minor areas on the bottom. One small chip in the back. Hinge works very well, but the mechanism to release the lid is bit tight so it makes it somewhat hard to open the lid. There is a tiny nip/point on the tip.this would have been able to get under thread and perhaps be used as a sort of seam ripper or thread pulling tool. Up for auction is a collection of five carved bone sewing tools. These are all antique and in used condition. The group consists of two needle cases. Two awls and one ribbon threader. The first needle case measures 3 inches by just over ¼ inches wide. It twists apart to reveal the needle compartment. There is a tiny area of loss to the top of the screw edge. A single, scrimshaw line completes the top. The second needle case measures 2 ¼ inches by ¼ inches wide. It screws apart to reveal the needle compartment. There is a ¼ inch vertical crack on the top. It has two scrimshaw lines on the lid as well. This lot includes two sewing awls. One has a large hole that may have contained a Stanhope at one time. They measure 2 ½ inches tall and ¼(plus) wide. Found with the lot, as seen in photo 12, is a note written in the hand of my grandmother as follows: My mother’s bone crochet hook. I broke it—yarn too heavy. Her mother came to the United States from Germany in 1886. I discovered this crochet hook. Together with the other 10 sewing tools in my grandmother's old sewing cabinet. The daisy buttons are lucite, the tatting shuttle is celluloid, as is the crochet hook with the flat handle. The beaded velvet strawberry is a pincushion(not an emery) The wooden needle case has holes for different sized needles; the pin cushion on the top has a little wear but still intact. Also included is a small sewing knife with celluloid ... morehandle(the very tip has a tiny chip) The linen needlebook is hand-made& embroidered with silk floss(a bit of wear to the embroidery) Also included is a needle waxer and two crepe paper"flowers" with straight pins in the center. Antique Carved Bone Bodkins Awls Fids Sewing Tools 6 Pcs
This is a very nice lot of 5 carved bone bodkins and one carved bone cap( The first bodkin from the left is about 4" tall. The next is 3 3/8" the third is 3 1/4" the fourth is 2 3/4" and the last bodkin is 2 3/4" The last mystery piece is also made of bone and was stored with the bodkins. It is about 1" long and has a deep hollow center. I thought it might be a cap but it didn't fit any of the items in the sewing box. The first bodkin has more brown bone"specs" on one side than the other. The 3rd bodkin from the left has a flat area which looks like the bone wasn't as thick at that spot when the bodkin was carved. It does look original to the carving and not later damage. All the bodkins are in very good antique condition.
