The faces are very sweet. The colors are excellent with no fading or chips. The darner that has the dark hair has a split in the grain I'm sure due to age. The first(top photos) belonged to my great grandmother on my father's side of the family. It came with an old desk that I inherited from my grandmother over forty years ago. It measures about 6" long overall with 3-1/4" of that being the gloss black painted handle. I think the egg portion is painted wood but it sort of feels and looks like it may have been dipped in a hard. Plaster-like material. The egg also has some staining as if it ... morewas hung upside down and the handle paint ran onto it. It could also have been accidentally stained by some kind of dye(possibly laundry bluing etc. However the stain got there it looks quite attractive and unique. There is a small amount of wear on the handle as one would expect. The second egg I found in an old truck. About 20 years ago, which contained items once owned by a great aunt and uncle from my mother's side of the family and is comparatively quite primitive in appearance! It measures about 6-3/8" long overall with 3-1/2" of that being the handle. It appears to have been originally painted a light brown color. Most of which was worn away long ago! It's interesting in that it has been repaired. It's impossible to know whether it was patched by the original maker or by a subsequent owner. The paint extends partially over the repair which makes me think the maker painted over it thinking nobody would ever know! It has a nice patina to it, and the business end of it is pitted with scratches and needle marks from many years of use. I've cleaned it with Murphy's oil soap. There is an unmarked"Foot Form" style one. It is 5-5/8" long. A very primative dark stained one. It is a little under 6" long. And a very interesting 3 piece example that is 6-1/2" long. Overall condition is good. They all show signs of use and wear. The dark stained one has a crack in the handle(see photos) the 3 piece one has what looks like an ink pen mark on the inside to the right of the rough area(does not show on outside) Otherwise it's a great group that looks awesome on display!
