2 Wood Darning Eggs~Robin Egg Blue Original Paint
Listing all of my small collection of antique and vintage darning eggs. I don't sew but just like the look and feel of these things. All sewing marks on the eggs are vintage. Too! 2 x pretty blue ~ Original paint. Happy to combine as there will likely be savings on postage(wait for invoice) Also some buttons listed. THERE WAS A TIME when no proper household would be without at least one. As common as sadirons and buttonhooks. They were regularly used by women, often by children, occasionally by men. And, although they came in a seemingly infinite number of shapes, sizes and materials, every one had the same function- to hold fabric taut while being darned. They are stocking darners(or darning eggs, balls, bells, spools, mushrooms) once highly esteemed in the days of the"use it up, wear it out- make do, or do without" society ... morethat has been shunted aside in today's disposable one. Yet this humble tool is emerging again as a fascinating, attractive and highly sought-after collectible. A 19th-century instruction manual for teachers describes the virtues of darning as part of the American public-school curriculum: If wisely taught. It develops the thrifty dispositions and habits of neatness, cleanliness, order, management and industry. Darners were made from nearly every conceivable material, most commonly wood, as well as stag horn, mother-of-pearl, porcelain, ceramic, celluloid, plastic, Bakelite, papier-mache, ivory, brass, aluminum and tin.

This is a beautiful. Antique, sterling silver darning egg. The handle is marked sterling. The top portion is hardwood. It is in very good condition. There is some slight wear-please see photos. 2.5" long 5.5" round Hand Blown White Glass Darning Egg. This one is very interesting. It little black specks- imperfections in the glass and the tip of the shows clearly a little nipple where blower severed connection with egg at time of blowing. The nipple is brownish and rough. This was probably a"dime store" purchase for only a penny or two. Really neat. Not the fancier more pristine as they usually are. I heard from a shopper that this is actually an egg that farmers used to put in hens nests to encourage them to lay eggs. I know that my great great grandmother did use this as a sock darning egg, but as she lived on a farm, with chickens, I am sure she used it because it was handy and probably the perfect size especially for children's socks.
