It is in the form of a book and covered with brown leather. The sides are gold embossed with scrolls. Birds, fountains and decorative borders. The'spine' is embossed'Lady's Companion' The interior is lined with velvet and printed paper(all original) The leather is in excellent overall condition. Much better than usually seen. The top is gold stamped with the maker or retailer's name, I. Bagshaw, 96 Church Street, Liverpool" It's 4 1/8" tall. 3 1/8" wide and 1 7/8" deep. Some in this style are shown on p. 92 of of Bridget McConnel's book The Story of Antique Needlework Tools. The sterling silver tools(tested) include a ... morethimble. A tape measure, a propelling pencil and a sterling topped perfume bottle. Also included are steel scissors, steel tweezers/earspoon, steel seam knife a spool and a packet of needles. The last two items are in the'secret drawer' below the thimble rest. The steel tools are held in a leather needle book which has moth damage to the wool needle page. The silver tape measure has a silk tape marked in inches and works well to wind in back in. The thimble has an applied band and wriggle work engraving. It has 3 tiny needle holes but you have to look for them. The condition is otherwise excellent. It's about an American size 9(16 mm diameter opening) The little scissors(3 5/8" long) have tight blades and sharp points and cut very well. The propelling pencil works well(twists out the lead) and it holds a 0.7 mm lead. It is stamped with the maker's name. Sampson Mordan. The cut glass perfume bottle has the original glass stopper, a sterling top and has no chips or cracks. The other tools are also in great shape with no damage. Ornate 19Th Cent. Italian Cut Steel Sewing Scissors Campobasso. B. Terzano Description: These lovely and rare ornate antique Italian steel filigree sewing scissors have fancy pierced bows and handles with scrolling floral pattern. They are completely hand made and filed and the handwork and engraving on both sides is beautifully done. They are Italian from the famous steel making Campobasso city and are stamped with the maker’s initials. If you look at the picture you will note that there’s a tiny disc by the tip of one of the blades. When trying to cut off the selvages of a fabric to get the proper width or length you need to cut a straight line. The tiny disc on the tip allows to pull a thread up along the length of the fabric and use it as a cutting guide. It also can be used to create tulle inserts and to realize laces. All the scissors are in great used condition.The first pair(pics 2-4) shows a crane or stork form and measures 4 inches tall by 1.5" long from side to side at their handles. This pair shows some fairly light surface discolorations from use and from age.I also see surface discoloration on the inside of the scissors. When the pair is opened.The next pair in the collection(pics 5-9) measures 3.5" tall by almost 1.5" long from side to side. The tape is pulled from the hare's tummy, and is wound back in by turning his tail. AGE The tape dates to the end of the 19th century. Circa 1890. SIZE The tape measures 6cm(2 1/2" long and 3.5cm(1" deep and 5cm(2" high. CONDITION The tape is in a very good condition for age.
