Rarely were pillow cases used that did not bear the handiwork of the needleworker. Condition This bone-handled fid is in excellent working condition with a very sharp point. Ready to ply its trade at a moments notice! It does show obvious signs of age as it was no doubt used frequently by my grandmother and mother during their embroidering years. As you can see in the pictures. The punch is marked with gradations to help the needleworker keep track of how large or small she wants the punched holes to be. You can also note. In the last picture, that the patent was pending on this product ... morewhen it went to market. Size It measures 5 5/8" from handle to tip. Fully extended. Retracted, it measures 4 5/8" the handle is 5/8" wide at its widest point. The maximum hole size would be 1/4" in diameter. While this tool was generally used on fabric. The ESTATE FIND in an old sewing box. The awl/hole puncher. I am not familiar with how it would have been used. There is a tiny nip/point on the tip.this would have been able to get under thread and perhaps be used as a sort of seam ripper or thread pulling tool. This antique sewing leather awl has been gently restored. What does gently restored mean? The overall objective is to preserve as much as the old tool or item with a good balance of lifetime patina as possible without the use of power tools. The first step is to dismantle the tool down to individual parts. Metal is typically initially cleaned using mineral oil. Or a weak solution of washing soda and water and if necessary brief burst of electrolysis to remove and or convert rust to black oxide. Whichever method is best, a scotch brite plastic cleaning pad is used with water so the underlying metal is not damaged. A heat gun is immediately used to blow dry and eliminate moisture which is followed by a hand rubbed coat of mineral oil. It is often necessary to repeat this step one or more times. After letting the oil“soak in” for a day or so, ... morethe item is wiped cleaned then hand rub in bees wax to seal it. For wood a weak solution of oil soap and water is used to remove grime, old oils and dirt which is air or blowed dry with a heat gun. This is followed by a hand rub of“feed and wax" Normally all other materials are simply wiped clean with a dry or slightly damp cloth as appropriate. If the situation requires it, a soft brass bristle brush or“0000” steel wool is used occasionally. A couple of items should be noted. The first is this gentle process may not remove all rust or dirt, etc, as there is always a balance of limiting restoration to not affect patina. The second is that tools and items are not conditioned for use such as sharpening, tightening or replacement of parts. This is left up to the judgement of the new owner as there is a large range of utilization of older tools. Lastly, the item may have residual oil left in the cleaning process. This can be wiped off but the item may benefit from an additional application of clear oil to further enhance and stabilize the item for extended life. Salvaged from the basement. Of my Grandpa Frank Sobotowitz, in the early 1960's when we sold his house in Kenosha, Wisconsin. He had all kinds of shoe repair tools and equipment. This is what I have left from there. I think they were made in the 1950's. The handles feel so calming, infact soothing to hold, as if there are many working memories held within. The red and brown colored handles together display an era long ago past. There is still linen thread on the spool inside the hollowed out handle. You can buy such tools new.but why? Art Deco Era Cobalt Blue Travel Sewing-Lace Making Tool Kit-Awl/Needles/Scissors

This is a lovely and functional. Art Deco(1920's) era compact travel sewing and lace making tool kit. There is a plastic awl, large plastic needle, a small cylindrical sewing needle holder and a pair of scissors. It is a pretty cobalt blue. It is marked Made in Germany. It measures about 3" inches long by 5/8" inch wide. It is in good condition. There is a nick on one side and nibbles on the clear ... moreplastic stripe part. NO RESERVE!
