Up for bid is this pair of unusual scissors. The handles of these scissors are very ornate and I think are sterling or possibly silverplate. But they are not marked, so cannot guarantee what the metal is. I don't have any idea what these scissors were used to cut, so if anyone knows, please let me know as I'm curious. This auction is for a gorgeous pair of small sterling handled embroidery scissors. They measure 3 1/2 inches long. I believe they are from the mid 1800's. You can see the small round mark on the top handle in photo 2.this reads. sterling silver" and other hallmarks that I cannot make out. These beautiful little embroidery scissors are 3 ½ inches in length. With 1 ½ inch blades. The handles are stamped“STERLING” in two places and the blades are very sharp with an excellent‘bite’ They are not loose. There is slight oxidation on the blades but no pitting; this should clean up well. The sterling handles are festooned with flowers, and are in their original, as-found condition; I wiped them but did not polish. Silscis3 Ornate Sheathed Antique Sterling Silver Scissors English* Circa 1840 These wonderfully ornate sterling silver(tested) handled embroidery scissors and their sterling sheath are at least 170 years old. The scissors shanks are modeled with birds and flowers and the bows are laurel wreaths. Flowers and foliage decorate the sheath. They were made in England in the early 19th century. Probably by Joseph Taylor of Birmingham. English silversmiths didn't mark small items(and have to pay duty on them) until required to by law in the early 1880s. They have tight blades and cut beautifully to the tips. The silver on the scissors is in excellent condition with no dents. Splits or repairs. The sheath is a nice snug fit on the scissors. The scissors measure 3 5/8" long(4" in the sheath) They were probably once part of a boxed set ... moreof tools. The scissors and sheath measures 12 inches or 30.5 cm long. The scissors themselves measure 11 inches or 28 cm long. The scissors have a silver very fancy floral decorated handles. The finger holes are shaped as oval frames. The silver is marked with a variety of hallmarks. The main hallmark is a key with a rampant lion. The sheath has a chain to attach it to a chatelaine and it threads through loops on the sides of the scissors' bows. It has the English sterling hallmarks for London 1874 and the maker's mark for Henry William Dee. The sheath is also marked for Thornhill. An elegant New Bond Street establishment. Antique Sterling Silver Sewing LOT Scissors Punch Two Thimbles Early Art Nouveau This is an excellent lot of antique sterling silver sewing tools and accessories. This lot includes a set of Scissors(sterling handle only) and punch with matching handles. And two thimbles. I am not sure of any of the makers or exact ages. The scissors have sterling handles. But one of the handles has a very small crack where it meets the scissor blades, and is loose. I do not see any more damage. The punch is in very good condition. The first thimble is stamped Sterling 10 Pat. May 31. 90(1890) It is in very good condition and there is a makers mark faded stamped on the inside of the thimble. The second thimble is stamped 9 and is also in very good condition. Though there is a small pin(or needle) hole at the top. The inside makers mark is also faded on this ... moreone as well. But both may be eligible to the experience eye in these sort of things. All of these pieces are absolutely beautiful. The total weight of JUST THE THIMBLES is 8grams. And the weight of the scissors and punch are 14.8 grams. These would make an excellent addition to any collection.
