Antique Steel Embroidery Scissors with Decorative Brass Sheath. 4 5/8 inches long, unmarked, probably European, probably late 1800’s, the scissors are undecorated and the steel has discoloration from oxidation, one tip is slightly bent, the brass sheath is 2 ¼ inches long and has an embossed design, there is discoloration from oxidation but no cracks in the seams, beautiful design is on both sides, the sheath was a necessary item to keep one from poking oneself with sharp embroidery scissors, they often became lost, this is a very nice example of an early sewing tool even though it is on a very ordinary pair of scissors. Up for auction is a lovely silver embroidery scissors sheath for a chatelaine or necklace. I cannot find any markings on it. But it appears that originally, the sheath was gilded as there is gold color in the nooks and crannies of the repousse. The top of the sheath is lined with red velvet. Antique Victorian Gothic Bronze Sheath And Scissors
This is a cool looking antique Victorian Gothic bronze sheath and scissors. I'm sensing it's from the 1880s to about 1900. The entire piece measures 10 1/2 inches long(26.7 cm) The sheath width varies from 1/4 inch at the bottom to 1 1/8 inches at the top(64 cm to 2.9 cm) It is 5/8 inches thick(1.6 cm) The scissors themselves measure 9 1/2 inches long(24.1 cm) The scissor handle is 2 1/4 inches wide(5.7 cm) The detail on this piece is beautiful. There's a good chance it's German. Though it's not marked. There is green tarnishing on one of the thin sides of the sheath(please see photo) One of the wide sides of the sheath has lost part of its patina. Possibly worn off due to use. This is a highly desirable and very scarce original late Victorian pair of shears. C1880s-90s, large, approx. ten inches long, bronze or brass, made in Germany- as shown, terrific period details and Jugendstihl(art nouveau) design, mild wear and tarnish, a bit loose in the sheath, unusual and elegant- the intricacy of the design is superb(see pics) This came from a local northern VT estate. Antique Steel Persian Scissors w/ Damascene Work & Silver Sheath * 18th Century
Scissors20 Antique Steel Persian Scissors/ Silver Sheath 18th Century These elegant dagger like steel scissors are Persian and have folding bows that open for use. Both sides are decorated with scrolling silver inlaid Damascene work. They measure 8 1/4" long. They have intact points. Tight blades and cut paper very well. They are Persian calligraphy scissors and paper is what they were designed to cut. They were made in the 1700s and the condition is unusually excellent with no rust or other damage. They came to me in a solid silver sheath. It has German 800 silver hallmarks(800/1000 pure silver) and dates to the mid-late 1800s. It's lined with velvet and fits the scissors so well that I think a nineteenth century owner may have had them made for the scissors. The silver sheath is heavy and solid and weighs 32.2 grams. It is 6" ... morelong and the scissors measure 8 3/8" when in the sheath. Scissors like these are shown on p. 291 of Frédérique Crestin-Billet's book La folie des Ciseaux.
