This is a figural tape measure in the form of an orange painted metal egg with a plastic fly. It has no markings on it. The metal case has some small chips in the paint which makes me think it was used as a darner. There are no dents. The tape pulls out fine but the cloth has fraying. I just love old sewing notions like this. Imagine its history and how many socks it may have fixed over the years. Solid wood painted black. Egg shaped, sock darner. 6" long. Age unknown and type of wood under paint unknown. Condition: Vintage. The black finish has remained nicely intact over the years. Plenty of needle usage marks give this beauty a primitive look and feel and the black paint is only slightly scratched in spots. The egg is somewhat flat on the end. So it can stand up on its own. Antique Sock Darner Spalted Maple Vintage OOAK Darning Mushroom Form
One can view folk art and the more common sock darners all over the internet. I can only imagine that this elegantly designed sewing tool was made for the lady of the manor during times of distress when help was no longer affordable or available. Although I am no expert. I have a friend with some authority who has told me this is assembled with a spalted maple finished with a light stain for the darning portion, and a medium stained maple for the finely turned handle. This belonged to my mother as early as the late 1930's and my grandmother conceivably as early as the 1900's since she was nearly 40 years old at the birth of my mother. It's possible even my great grandmother had it before but that is just speculation as my mother had passed before that could be confirmed. Times are tough. The item is made of glass, there are two pieces that have been glued together and have what looks like pepper corns or some other spice inside. I do not know what this is, if it is not a darner.
