ANTIQUE CAST IRON SEWING CLAMP IN THE FORM OF A DOLPHIN. ca. 1840
Continental ca. 1840. This sewing necessity was used to hold fabric when hemming. It is very elaborately decorated right down to the thumb screw used to attach the clamp to the work table. The two sided thumb screw is in the form of an angel with wings and the head of the dolphin supports a pin cushion. The condition is excellent with no cracks. Chips or breaks and the steel spring which opens the mouth of the dolphin is strong and very functional.

I think the hoop pieces are from one set and the anchor base is from and older set. A bit of paper or tape wrapped around the plug would make it tighter and fit well for use. Function/Use: Widely used in Europe by women who ran cottage(at-home) businesses. Much better than the simple hoops that you must hold in your hand. The item for auction is an Antique/Vintage“Sewing Bird” Seamstress’ Clamp and Pin Cushion. The item was acquired less the newly installed pin cushion by a local seamstress in the family. The steel tool is authentic and not a reproduction. The item features a clamp to fasten to a work table with a maximum thickness of 7/8” and also has another clamp in the bird’s beak that is designed to hold fabric. See last photo. These items were also referred to as a“seamstress’ third hand” as it allowed the seamstress to use both hands freely for sewing. The item measures 3 1/2” wide by 6” long. A Fine collector piece offered here that was acquired from Queens estate. This Sewing box was original owned by Stated"Agustina Bruchaus" and dated 1863. A pristine box with clamp in a fine inlaid hardwood. Measures 6.75" deep. 2.75" wide and 4" Height. The drawer is fine dovetailed craftsmanship and is rather tight and needs some adjusting or oil to get it to open easily. An absolutely lovely example of a necessary useful piece of the 19th century. This is an original metal sewing clamp. The pins go into the original blue velvet cushion on the top. The cushion sets into a tin base with a ring of brass around the dish holding the blue cushion. I have not seen another clamp like this one with the two wire prongs on either side. They. Most likely, held cotton reels for the sewing to be done, probably smaller than my two red spools of thread I have used to demonstate the clamp. OLD VICTORIAN SEWING BIRD CLAMP HELPER PIN CUSHION BRASS PATENTED 1853
Here is an old original Victorian brass sewing bird clamp or helper and pin cushion. These were clamped onto the table and used as a third hand while sewing. Mending, etc. This one has a great heart shape cut out in the thumbscrew. Marked on the bird's wings nearest the body is"PATENTED- FEB. 15 1853. Everything works well, spring is still good and tough. The only issue I see is there would have been a larger pin cushion just below the bird's chest that is gone. A threaded hole remains. Other than that it is excellent. There is a good write up about these on a site called realorrepro. It shows the differences between the real ones like mine compared to the two main repros out there. It measures approx.4 inches long, and 2 inches across the widest part of the wings. It stands 3 1/2 inches tall not counting the thumbscrew. Check ... morethe photos carefully for close ups and details. The photos are part of the description. It weighs just over 1 pound packaged for safe shipment and will ship via USPS Priority Mail. Description Wonderful antique regency early Tunbridge ware painted wood sewing clamp. With integral lidded pot(to contain small sewing items) which would have original had a vabric pincushion to the lid. The clamp has typical baded and floral painted decoration, as is found on these early pieecs, plus early printed image of the Brighton Pavillion. AGE The clamp dates to the start of the 19th century. Circa 1820's. SIZE The clamp measures 14cm(5¼" high. 7.7cm(3" deep and 7.7cm(3" wide. CONDITION The clamp is in good condition for considerable age. Althpugh there is considereable surface wear and fading to the painted decoration, especially to the lid. As can be seen from the photographs, the original pin cushion is sadly missing. Antique Victorian Original Ornate Silver Plated Sewing Bird Clamp 1853 patent
This auction is for a wonderful early bird sewing clamp. It is gorgeous! The ornate work. And it seems to be in very good condition from what I can see. You press the tail and the birds mouth opens to hold the fabric. Bird measures 4 inches long. The one wing has embossed"PATENT" and the other wing has"Feb 15. 1853. Sweetest little piece. The screw is the only part I am not sure about. I have seen similar birds with a much more ornate screw. But this looks early and fits and turns beautifully.just thought I would point this out. Also, I believe the round spot on the top would have had some early velvet to hold the pins, and there is no fabric there now. Please feel free to ask any questions.

Unusual c1860s Sewing Clamp with Thread or Spool Holder
A neat 19th Century Sewing Clamp. The Clamp has an attached thread or spool holder. The sewing implement is hand made in the mid to later 1800s and is made from Maple wood. The screw is a lighter colored wood, it fits but I can't tell if it is origin or simply refinished. Overall dimensions are 6 1/2" high x 1 3/4" in diameter. There is an old repair on the bottom and the wood screw is very tight to turn, see photos. The sewing clamp would make a neat addition to an early sewing collection. This large mid 1800's sewing clamp has a screw crank to secure it to a table edge. It is made of maple. With paint decoration. There is a post at the top to allow use of a pin cushion, winder, needlework hoop, or other sewing item. The clamp is 12"long overall, with the clamp open, and is in excellent condition considering it's age, with only a small surface crack visible which does not affect strength, function, or appearance. It will clamp tightly to a table edge, as shown. Rare items like this are now extremely hard to find.

Antique Large Solid Wood Sewing Clamp
This was a pin cushion clamp. But the pin cushion is now gone. It could be replaced with out much effort. This was a real working women's sewing clamp not a dainty one from a work box. I think the wood is mahogany. It is all from one piece of solid wood that was carved. The turning handle works and the piece is in very good condition. Featured here for your bidding consideration is this very ornate antique brass Victorian sewing bird tool. Often referred to as a sewer's"third hand. This nifty item could be clamped on the edge of a work table at the ready for the industrious home sewer. It would have held two pin cushions for easy accessibility of pins, AND the bird acts as a spring loaded clamp to hold the sewing project in place in its beak. How handy! Fortunately, this bird is in good working order, and the clamp will hold tightly to any fabric. However, the two pin cushions are missing. Antique wood sewing clamp. Possibly sycamore wood, light weight, believed to be English. It is the original finish-no wax or polish or staining. The wooden screw works well, and when fully open is over an inch wide to attach to a table or quilt frame. The area where the pincushion base is attached shows chips and wear marks. Thin ornate metal piece on front appears to be silver and is held in place by a tiny metal nail on each end. Pincushion's cover is a"mole gray" velvet. The clamp may be earlier than the 1860s.
