This is lovely antique darner and spool holder. It screws on and contains the double thread holder with even the old cream and black thick thread! There is a crack on one of the egg pices which I tried to show in the picture. On that same piece there are two small chips. but when you screw it together. You can make the good side only show. The wood is beautiful and shiny with dark striations throughout. A wonderful addition to your collection.

Antique Dec.18 1900 Banded Wooden Darning Egg
This is a wooden darning egg with a metal band/clamp on the top. The band says Pat Dec. 18 1900. The photos show the patina and condition on the piece. The piece is 4 3/8" long and just about 2 1/4" in diameter. There is a small hole in the bottom of the handle from an eye-hook but this did not crack the handle.

The tiny flowers, leaves and buds all have their own special and individual allure. Darning eggs" were used for generations and generations in many different forms and material. They were a tool and an aid to be used especially for darning socks when a hole in a sock meant immediate repair.rather than buying a new pair. This is not only a great piece of the past.it is a lovely small piece of art. It is basically the same shape and size as an x-large hen egg. Or perhaps a small duck egg.
