Antique Steel Embroidery Scissors with Decorative Brass Sheath. 4 5/8 inches long, unmarked, probably European, probably late 1800’s, the scissors are undecorated and the steel has discoloration from oxidation, one tip is slightly bent, the brass sheath is 2 ¼ inches long and has an embossed design, there is discoloration from oxidation but no cracks in the seams, beautiful design is on both sides, the sheath was a necessary item to keep one from poking oneself with sharp embroidery scissors, they often became lost, this is a very nice example of an early sewing tool even though it is on a very ordinary pair of scissors. Offered are three pairs of antique sewing embroidery scissors. All the scissors are in great used condition.The first pair(pics 2-4) shows a crane or stork form and measures 4 inches tall by 1.5" long from side to side at their handles. This pair shows some fairly light surface discolorations from use and from age.I also see surface discoloration on the inside of the scissors. When the pair is opened.The next pair in the collection(pics 5-9) measures 3.5" tall by almost 1.5" long from side to side. The blades are stamped with the maker's mark"Leuchars" There is a town in Scotland by that name and William Leuchars was a silversmith in London. This is the first pair of scissors I've had with the name and I'm not sure who the maker is. The scissors still have most of their gilding and are in great condition. The y have intact points and cut beautifully to the tips. They measure not quite 3 1/2" long and 1 1/4" across the bows. The intricate handles were hand made and filed and the detail is lovely. The steel blades are tight with intact points and they cut pretty well. They are exceptionally high quality however and would take a nice edge if you want to sharpen and actually use them.
