Antique BUTTONHOLE SCISSORS: W.H. Morley and Sons: CUT STEEL w/ Depth GAUGE
Antique W.H. Morley and Sons Buttonhole Scissors 4 3/8-in Length. Germany, with adjustable-spacer screw ca 1920 This is an interesting pair of scissors used by seamstresses to make buttonholes. The scissors were made by W. H. Morley and Sons. Germany, and are the Clover Brand. They were brought to the U.S. around 1920. These scissors are in excellent condition. The spacer screw turns effortlessly and spreads the blades. It is the spacer that determines the length of the buttonhole. The top of the blades near the hinge is cut out so that a space remains open when the blades close. The blades are still fairly sharp. The steel shows very minor staining. But there is no rust, and the blades open and close smoothly. The scissors are a total of 4 1/2" in length. The blades are 1 3/4" from the tip to the hinge. I think the W.H. PAT DEC 1884. The screw used to adjust to the size of the buttonhole desired is probably not original. But the other parts are.

Rare scissors made for cutting buttonholes. This pair has an ingenious adjustment feature to size buttonhole cuts and make matching cuts. Marked with a patent number and dated July 1, 1884 on one side, with an animal figure and name logo on the other. Makers mark is difficult to read, however, but is visible on the photo. The sizes of the cuts are numbered. It is 4 1/2" long. The scissors are in excellent working condition, and have the patina of old age. There is no damage to the metal.

These antique buttonhole scissors were found in my mother's San Francisco estate. I am estimating that these come from the pre-1930 era. The inserted screw allows for them to be adjustable(see photos) They measure approximately 5-1/4" from the tip of the blade to the edge of the handles and are in very good condition.
