Figural Antique Gilded Steel Owl Scissors German Circa 1900's.
Up for bid is a figural antique gilded steel owl scissors. Kullenberg Germany,Registered. This was originally gold plated, most of which has worn away. It measures approximately 7" long. The owl is 2 sided, the eyes that had gems in them on one side are missing. The points on the blades are intact and it cuts well. There is no rust, in useable condition.

This pair of scissors was made in Germany by Garland Cutlery Co. Company signature is on the inside of the open scissors as seen in the attached photo. Scissors have a very fine. Sharp point tip. The scissors are in the shape of a stork with the tip of the scissors as the beak of the stork. Scissors are 3 ½ inches long and approximately 1/ ½ inches wide at the widest point. The scissors have had a lot of wear and use. Scissors will need to be adjusted at the set screw as they are fairly loose. Probably could use an eyeglass or sewing machine screwdriver to adjust. These Lovely Antique Sewing Shears Are From Graef& Schmidt Circa 1890 They Were Were Made In Germany William Graef& Carl Schmidt were former salesman for the Peters Brothers Co. who opened up their own manufacturing and importing cutlery company in 1884 on# 29 Warren Street in NYC. At first they were cutlery importers. They and their heirs were the exclusive U.S. importers of J. A. Henckels Twin Works cutlery from 1884 to about 1948. Although no Henckels knives were imported to the USA between 1942 and 1950. According to the 1888 Illustrated New York- The Metropolis of Today. Graef and Schmidt were among the most active and enterprising manufacturers and importers of"high-class cutlery. They manufactured and imported"only the finest lines of pocket cutlery, butcher knifes, scissors, razors, etc. In addition to importing ... moreHenckels cutlery. When they first started they also imported their own"private brand" cutlery made for them with their name. This is one of those scissors. Later they purchased their own manufacturing plant in New Jersey where they made medical instruments and scissors. These scissors were not marked"Germany. The scissors shanks are modeled with birds and flowers and the bows are laurel wreaths. Flowers and foliage decorate the sheath. They were made in England in the early 19th century. Probably by Joseph Taylor of Birmingham. English silversmiths didn't mark small items(and have to pay duty on them) until required to by law in the early 1880s. They have tight blades and cut beautifully to the tips. The silver on the scissors is in excellent condition with no dents. Splits or repairs. The sheath is a nice snug fit on the scissors. They are the smallest I've ever seen(1/2" long) They open and close and I bet they would cut. They are wrapped up under cellophane with an embossed card from Joseph Rodgers& Sons. One of England's premier cutlers in the 19th century. The card says they were the cutlers to Queen Victoria. This piece was in the collection of Diane Pelham Burn and this is the piece that was photographed in the lower plate on p. 40 of her book Sew Precious. PE Guerin Brass Antique Desk Scissors * German * Circa late 1800s
P.E. Guerin is the oldest decorative hardware firm in the United States. And the only metal foundry in New York City. The company was started in 1857 by French immigrant Pierre Emmanuel Guerin and has been at its current location on Jane Street in Greenwich Village since 1892. Pierre Emmanuel Guerin was one of the pioneers in artistic metalwork in New York City. And examples of his production can still be found in various public buildings, parks and important residences throughout the city and the country. Maybe a goose? Foliage around the bows creates loops at the top so they could be attached to a chatelaine. They are stamped with the dagger hallmark used from 1814-1905 for 833 pure silver. Their style dates them from 1820-1850 and t hey measure 5" long. They are in nice. Usable condition with tight blades and intact points The silver has no repairs or other damage. Shagreen is usually from the skin of a shark or ray. This case is decorated all around with gilded studs. The interior mounting. Push button and ring on top are all solid sterling silver(tested) The scissors have nice details and are in excellent condition. The blades are tight with sharp points and they cut like new to the tips. It would be a great pair to actually use. Both the case and scissors date to the mid-late 18th century. The case measures 3 3/4" long x 1 5/8" wide at the top. The scissors are 3" long. The silver hinge is strong and original and the push button latch works well. They were made by Bontgen& Sabin. A well known cutlery company in Germany. In the photos, I've included a c. 1910 ad from the company showing these scissors. They're completely hand made and filed and the handwork and engraving on both sides is beautifully done. They were used for Carrickmacross* lace and have one point with a rounded section. They're Italian from the famous steel making Campobasso region and date to c.1890-1900. The blades are partially stamped but I can't make out the mark. They have tight blades. Intact points and cut beautifully to the tips. The condition is excellent with no damage or rust and they measure almost 4 3/8" long. The steel still has almost all of the original polished surface. Carrickmacross lace was composed of a layer of fine cambric laid on net. When the ... morepattern was outlined with stitching. Much of the cambric had to be cut away close to the stitches leaving the design applique on the net. Beautifully chased birds(doves) and flowers decorate the shanks and garlands of leaves form the bows. A scrolling floral design is on the sheath. They were made in England in the early 19th century. Probably by Joseph Taylor of Birmingham. English silversmiths didn't mark small items(and have to pay duty on them) until required to by law in the early 1880s. Scissors25 Ornate Antique Cut Steel Sewing Scissors English* Circa 1850 These fancy steel scissors are hand made and filed and have nicely curved bows with scrolls and faceted detail all around. The steel blades are tight with intact points and they cut beautifully to the tips. They are exceptionally high quality. The condition is excellent and they measure 5 5/8" long. They have the maker's mark(Mechi) stamped on the blades. This company was located at 4 Leadenhall St. in London and manufactured dressing cases. Cutlery, pencils and many other items. Silscis2 Antique Art Nouveau Sterling Silver Scissors American* Circa 1890 These wonderfully ornate sterling silver handled scissors are the height of late Victoriana. They are decorated on the shanks and bows with overblown. Flowing floral designs. They are marked"Sterling" on both handles. The blades are marked Germany, but the scissors are American. American manufacturers all ordered their blades from Germany during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The steel blades have sharp. Intact points and they cut well. The details are nicely engraved on both sides and they have the maker's mark(Joseph Feist. Solingen) stamped on the blades. I've never seen this pattern before. The points are intact but the blades need tightening. They cut very well though. The condition is excellent with no rust or damage and they measure 3 5/8" long. Silscis9 Ornate Antique Filigree Sterling Silver Scissors English* Circa 1850 These lovely sterling handled scissors have ornate all over scrolling patterns that imitate silver filigree. This pattern was very popular in the mid 19th century. They have their matching sheath and both test sterling silver. English silversmiths didn't mark small items(and have to pay duty on them) until required to by law in the early 1880s. The steel blades are tight with intact points and they cut pretty well. The silver is in excellent condition with no dents. Repairs or damage and they measure 3 3/4" long. A pair in this filigree style is shown on p. 108 of Gay Ann Rogers' book The Illustrated History of Needlework Tools. The condition is excellent and they measure 3 1/2" long. A couple of pairs with these bows are shown in a 1816 Sheffield guide to polished steel scissors on p. 45 of Needlework Tools and Accessories by Molly Proctor. They're very rare and hard to find. Scissors7 Antique Steel Scissors& Sterling Silver Sheath English* Circa 1800 These antique scissors are steel and simply and elegantly shaped. They come in a sterling silver(tested) sheath dating to c. 1790-1810. The sheath has a scrolling monogram on one side( MEB) The scissors measure 3 3/4" long. 3 7/8" long in the sheath. The blades are tight with intact points and they cut well. The bows are slightly different shapes and it's hard to tell if they were made that way or if it came from use. The sheath has a few minor dings but is in overall excellent condition with no other damage and t he scissors fit well.
