Antique Pinking Machine called The Gem dates to April 25, 1899
Up for auction is THE GEM. An antique pinking machine, dating back 114 years ago. In sewing circles, pinking is the name given to produce scalloped or zig-zag edges to cloth to prevent fraying or for decorative purposes. The serious sewer used special machines such as this one for pinking. Today, the homemaker uses a shears called a pinking shears to perform the same tasks. The item for auction(THE GEM) was patented by H.A. Hannum on April 25th, 1899. The Hannum machine was made by H.A. Hannum& Co. of Syracuse, N.Y. and was a success as this improved version which he called The Gem became known. On the left side. This auction is for an old industrial looking pinking machine in as found uncleaned condition. On the machine it states"DURBROW& HEARNE MFG CO NY" and on the cloth plate there is some patent information-see photos. The machine suffers from some paint loss and it looks like the wooden hand crank was replaced at some point in its existence. Machine rotates and appears to work as it should- I tried it on a sheet of paper and it worked well- see photo. I do not see any cracks or breaks.

This kind of fancy pinking rotary cutter was also used for pinking ruffles on Victorian dresses. Weight is 5.5lbs. Machine measures 5 1/2 wide and 6 1/4 across bed. It also has an adjustable face guide for how deep u want it from the edge of your product. Crank handle turns smoothly. Tighten or loosen pressure of die by tightening or loosening the spring below. This is a vintage Columbus Coated Fabrics Corporation pinking machine in outstanding original condition. According to my research. This is a highly sought after vintage pinking machine from a company that has gone out of business completely. Columbus Coated Fabrics operated in Columbus OH and originally started in 1901 as Columbus Oil Cloth. The company, or a version of it, closed it's doors in 2001 after 100 years of operation. This pinking machine has the desirable fancy zigzag scallop blade(triple point triangle. Image#4) and it easily cuts through both quilting cotton and leather; it leaves a beautiful edge on oil cloth as well. I have lightly cleaned the machine and oiled the moving parts where necessary. My philosophy is simple, I don't over clean or try to"restore" vintage tools. I do rejuvenate them to a condition ... morewhere a craftsman or artist would be proud to work with the tool or display it in a shop or collection. This machine operates as designed and all of the adjustments work properly. The original japanning is about 98% intact with just a few dings on the edges of the platform and one near the lower back. All of the parts are original to this machine and operate smoothly without impediment. The original maple handle is in excellent condition as well and it is without damage or repairs. The original gold label is prominent on the front of the machine and it is 100% intact and clear(image#3) I have taken several images of different angles so you can see the fine details and outstanding condition of this machine. Antique/vintage pinking machine with the RARE and sought after scalloped cutter. This machine produces the intricate scalloped pinking that is highly prized by historical costumers. Seamstresses, and preservationists. I have been told that taxidermists also use these machines(for what purpose I have no idea) The original label on the machine is somewhat worn but reads"Durbrow and Hearne Wooster St" I learned from Google that the company was located at the address 12 Wooster St. in New York City from 1884 until 1981. This was acquired at an auction from the estate of Michael D. Roberts(July 4. 1939- August 1, 2014) who was a member and contributor of International Sewing Machine Collectors Society(ISMACS) It works and was tested on thin leather. Denim, thin fabric and vinyl upholstery. Here is an HD video I made of this item. The pinker has the original paint with chips and wear. All exposed metal parts are in good condition. The chrome deck has a good shine with some light scratches. The brass handle. Clamping screw and gauge thumbscrew have a good shine. It rotates as it should. It was used in the home and in general stores to cut a sawtooth edge on fabrics. Cloth edges that are unfinished will easily fray, the weave becoming undone and threads pulling out easily. The sawtooth pattern does not prevent the fraying but limits the length of the frayed thread and thus minimizes damage. The machine is roughly 5 inches wide and 6 inches long to the bottom of the clamp screw. It weighs 2 pounds 8 ounces. It will be double boxed and have a shipping weight of 3 pounds 8 ounces. The fabric feeds onto the surface plate using the edge guard for guidance. While turning the wood handled crank. The adjustable upper solid wheel provides pressure down on the zig-zag wheel to pierce the fabric.
