Antique Wood Sock Darner With Original Metal Band This is a great antique darner in a mushroom shape with a metal band which can be used to hold a sock in place while darning. It is hardwood construction appears to maple. But cannot guarantee it. Measures 2 1/4 inches in diameter X 4 inches in length. The band is stamped PAT'D DEC 18, 1900. A nice sewing collectible. It has great patina and I love the scars that it shows from someone using it. As is the nature of vintage treasures this piece is neither perfect nor pristine. But shows subtle marks of time gone by which in no way compromises the soundness of the piece, but only adds to the beauty and the character. Great addition to any ones collection. The stamp on this one is not as clear as some others like it, but it was originally stamped"FOOT FORM Pat. NOV, 1907" I can still make out the word FOOT, and the 07, but not much else. The label inside is not perfect but indicates it was Patented Nov. 10th, 1874 by Harley's. The patent date is also stamped in the wood on the handle. The very top unscrews for needle storage. There is an unmarked"Foot Form" style one. It is 5-5/8" long. A very primative dark stained one. It is a little under 6" long. And a very interesting 3 piece example that is 6-1/2" long. Overall condition is good. They all show signs of use and wear. The dark stained one has a crack in the handle(see photos) the 3 piece one has what looks like an ink pen mark on the inside to the right of the rough area(does not show on outside) Otherwise it's a great group that looks awesome on display! Purchased from an estate(old farmhouse in what used to be a rural area of Pittsburgh) filled with lots of antique sewing items. Including several old treadle sewing machines. The family lived in the house for many generations, and the same family had occupied the home since the 1800's when it was originally built.
