This is a beautiful. Antique, sterling silver darning egg. The handle is marked sterling. The top portion is hardwood. It is in very good condition. There is some slight wear-please see photos. Antique Blown Milk Glass Darning Egg/or for nesting hens farm supply/different!
2.5" long 5.5" round Hand Blown White Glass Darning Egg. This one is very interesting. It little black specks- imperfections in the glass and the tip of the shows clearly a little nipple where blower severed connection with egg at time of blowing. The nipple is brownish and rough. This was probably a"dime store" purchase for only a penny or two. Really neat. Not the fancier more pristine as they usually are. I heard from a shopper that this is actually an egg that farmers used to put in hens nests to encourage them to lay eggs. I know that my great great grandmother did use this as a sock darning egg, but as she lived on a farm, with chickens, I am sure she used it because it was handy and probably the perfect size especially for children's socks. This is lovely antique darner and spool holder. It screws on and contains the double thread holder with even the old cream and black thick thread! There is a crack on one of the egg pices which I tried to show in the picture. On that same piece there are two small chips. but when you screw it together. You can make the good side only show.
