The spring appears to be missing thereby not allowing the beak to stay closed. The pincushion is without its velvet top& it appears that the wings have been broken off& are missing. The item for auction is an Antique/Vintage“Sewing Bird” Seamstress’ Clamp and Pin Cushion. The item was acquired less the newly installed pin cushion by a local seamstress in the family. The steel tool is authentic and not a reproduction. The item features a clamp to fasten to a work table with a maximum thickness of 7/8” and also has another clamp in the bird’s beak that is designed to hold fabric. See last photo. These items were also referred to as a“seamstress’ third hand” as it allowed the seamstress to use both hands freely for sewing. The item measures 3 1/2” wide by 6” long. The tension spring for the upper clamp is extremely strong. ANTIQUE SOLINGEN GERMANY BIRD STORK EMBROIDERY SEWING THREAD SCISSORS VINTAGE
This auction is for a very neat pair of antique embroidery scissors in the shape of a bird or stork. The scissors measure almost 4 inches long. They are in excellent condition and still work beautifully. I believe they were gold plated. But some of the gold has rubbed off over time. The stamp inside the scissor(photo 4) says, H H Hill, Solingen, Germany" Sorry it is so hard to see. It is very clear with a magnifying glass. These were made in the early 1900's. Great rare vintage figural sewing tape measure. This bird- Shaped holder looks like a kookaburra. It has a cloth tape measure with a round metal end that comes out from beneath the bird’s tail. The kookaburra has quite a lot of detail in his painted metal body. The piece has some paint loss(see our pictures. On the underneath part of the tail you can make out faintly“ Germany” embossed in the metal. He stand proudly at 2 ¾ inches tall and is about 3 ½ inches from beak to tail. Antique RARE Claus Sewing Scissors in the Shape of a Bird
Small Vintage Gold& Silver Toned Italian Stork Bird Sewing/ Embroidery Scissors. They measure 3.5" x 1.5" are marked CLAUS. They are still very sharp and cut very well. The head. Body, and feet are gold tone, while the beak and wings are silver tone. Why the stork. Since midwives were women who also did needlework in their spare time, they kept their medical tools handy-in their sewing basket. Maybe they even worked on their needlework while waiting for a baby to be born! The original stork scissors were not actually scissors, but clamps used by midwives in the 1800s to tie off the umbilical cord after a woman gave birth. The original beaks were offset, rather than straight, rounded instead of pointed, and the blades were dull, not for cutting fabric. Midwives often did needlework in their spare time and kept their medical tools ... morehandy in their sewing baskets. Many have found these odd looking storks mixed in the contents of antique sewing baskets. Over time, the storks morphed into the scissors we know and love today. Now a more refined looking stork, on the way to becoming scissors. It seems that the storks originated in France and spread to England, Germany the Orient and on to the Americas. Here is a lovely large pair of vintage sewing scissors in the shape of a bird or crane with gold wash on the body and legs of the bird. The body of the bird is etched with feather details and the wings are silver colored so they stand out against the body. This is a very special antique sewing bird or clamp The pin cushion holder is a beautiful shell. Cut steel for the cloth holder and clamp, and a gutta percha material for the spool of thread holder. The pin cushion has the original red velvet with a brown velvet trim around the edges. This piece is in excellent condition considering the age of the piece. I do not know what the decorated front steel piece says. It might be a clue to where this sewing bird was made. A wonderful and unique piece to add to a sewing collection. See photos.

Exceptional Antique Gilt Metal Sewing Bird
A fabulous mid 19th Century English sewing bird. The finish is very attractive. Gilt over metal which I assume is iron. The sewing bird clamps on to a table and holds your fabric in place. With its two pincushions in excellent condition, there's no reason this couldn't be used. Or add it to your collection of sewing implements or English antiques. The overall height, with the clamp closed, is just over 4 1/2" There is some inevitable wear to the gilt, which overall is very good. Other than that, there is no damage. OLD VICTORIAN SEWING BIRD CLAMP HELPER PIN CUSHION BRASS PATENTED 1853
Here is an old original Victorian brass sewing bird clamp or helper and pin cushion. These were clamped onto the table and used as a third hand while sewing. Mending, etc. This one has a great heart shape cut out in the thumbscrew. Marked on the bird's wings nearest the body is"PATENTED- FEB. 15 1853. Everything works well, spring is still good and tough. The only issue I see is there would have been a larger pin cushion just below the bird's chest that is gone. A threaded hole remains. Other than that it is excellent. There is a good write up about these on a site called realorrepro. It shows the differences between the real ones like mine compared to the two main repros out there. It measures approx.4 inches long, and 2 inches across the widest part of the wings. It stands 3 1/2 inches tall not counting the thumbscrew. Antique Victorian Original Ornate Silver Plated Sewing Bird Clamp 1853 patent
This auction is for a wonderful early bird sewing clamp. It is gorgeous! The ornate work. And it seems to be in very good condition from what I can see. You press the tail and the birds mouth opens to hold the fabric. Bird measures 4 inches long. The one wing has embossed"PATENT" and the other wing has"Feb 15. 1853. Sweetest little piece. The screw is the only part I am not sure about. I have seen similar birds with a much more ornate screw. But this looks early and fits and turns beautifully.just thought I would point this out. Also, I believe the round spot on the top would have had some early velvet to hold the pins, and there is no fabric there now. Please feel free to ask any questions.

Rare Antique Gerould & Co. Brass Sewing Bird Circa 1860-1870
Antique A. Gerould Brass Sewing Bird This sewing bird is circa 1865 and exhibits the original patina. This is molded and known as the full bodied robin. When clamped to the table. Pushing down on the tail lifts the beak to allow the seamstress an"extra hand" to hold the fabric. He is still in good working order and the spring is strong. Embossed on the underside of the tail is"A. Gerould& Co" and"Patent" The piece measures just under four inches from beak to tail and it would sit about two inches above the tabletop. The bird is brass and the clamping mechanism is iron. Payment is expected within three days of the end of the auction; shipment will be one business day after payment is received.

Antique Sewing Bird Another of the many vintage sewing/needlework items I am selling from one collector. This item is being sold in"as found" condition. There is plenty of tarnish and patina on it. The only marks I can find on it are on the top of the wings by the head. It is stamped Patent Feb 15 1853. I do not know the actual age of the piece. I have seen plenty of reproductions on the market. This is in working condition the birds mouth opens to hold the fabric for had sewing. There are two pin cushions that were at one time a much darker pink color. I can see the original color on the underside where the fabric meets the metal. The 2 original felt lined cushions are perfect; the pressed tin metal frame is also perfect- check my photos. Guaranteed a genuine antique sewing bird. Sewing clamps or sewing birds were devices used by a seamstress to assist with hand mending and fancy needlework. They acted like third hand. If you will. These Russian Sekwing Bird/ Clampvintage and oftentimes patented devices were typically fastened to a work table by a thumb-screw or other clamping action. The working portion was designed to hold the fabric so that it could be held taut with one hand and her other hand would be free to do the stitching. They are sometimes referred to as"third-hands" even though some were designed to help ... morewith numerous sewing tasks beyond just a third hand holding the fabric. Some were multi featured and had pincushions, thread cutters, small drawers, scissor sharpeners or other features to help with the sewing related tasks at hand. Some can be quite elaborate, others very plain and utilitarian. Some of the rarest. Most desirable and hardest to find are figural examples in the shapes of animals, birds, bugs or other critters. Manufacturers of the day promoted the health-related benefits of these needlework tools. Claiming they eliminated rounded shoulders and stooped backs developed while sewing. But clearly for the lady of comfortable means, who could afford it, these needlework tools were pieces of art that were treasured symbols of status and were often given and received as tokens of love. Some sewing clamps were made as almost little portable work stations and a very interesting and desirable model that we are looking for is known as the"Lady's Companion" It has all sorts of accessories and features that the typical clamp does not. Featured here for your bidding consideration is this very ornate antique brass Victorian sewing bird tool. Often referred to as a sewer's"third hand. This nifty item could be clamped on the edge of a work table at the ready for the industrious home sewer. It would have held two pin cushions for easy accessibility of pins, AND the bird acts as a spring loaded clamp to hold the sewing project in place in its beak. How handy! Fortunately, this bird is in good working order, and the clamp will hold tightly to any fabric. However, the two pin cushions are missing. Vintage Stork Sewing Scissors 1930's, Westfield Germany, RARE bird embroidery
I have a pair of Vintage stork/bird embroidery scissors. Dated to the early 1930's or before. This pair of scissors is marked Westfield MFG Germany, and was originally gold plated but the gold has worn down over the years. There is no other damage to the scissors, they are in original condition, i have not tried to polish them or alter them in any way. I have found similar scissors posted online, but i have not been able to find any from Westfield Germany, which leads me to believe they are slightly rarer then other types. Antique Victorian EraEmbossed Brass Sewing Bird/ Clamp/ Fabric Holder. Marked on the wings"Patented Feb 15. 1853" Sewing bird is embossed cast brass with a nickle plating. Clamps to a table or sewing stand. Holds material in its mouth in order to free a hand for stitching. Measures 3-5/8" L x 4-1/2" H. Very Good Used Condition. Clamp works fine. Nice original old patina. Pin cushion is missing and so is part of the round disk that attaches to the clamp.

ORIGINAL AUTHENIC WOODEN SEWING BIRD-PIN CUSHION
This is an original antique wooden large sewing bird. The warm mellow wood was carefully turned in the making. The length is between 7 and 8 inches depending on how tight the screw is turned. Note the special material for the little knob on the tip of the sewing bird. The material is worn on the cushion and could be replaced. This large sewing bird is in perfect condition and will add to any sewing collection. It has been in our collection for forty years. See photos.

There is some wear on the silver finish, and there is some wear on the velvet pin cushions. The base for the lower pin cushion is a little bent out of shape. That pin cushion is a little loose. I found this piece at an estate sale along with more sewing collectibles. Including another clamp with a bird figure! Description: Cast iron sewing clamp known as"birds" because they were usually decorated with a bird figure 1860's Civil war era This was used to hold the fabric in place while sewing The Turn screw attaches piece to a table It has a Scroll design made by the blacksmith Decorative scroll filigree piece swings on a hinge which comes down to hold the fabric in place Still has most of it's original black paint This is a real piece of History that you can hold in your hand! Maker: Unknown Size: 4 1/4" long 1 1/4" wide Condition: Used Black paint is slightly worn ... morein spots No rust Excellent condition Interesting antique sewing tool. A device that clamps on to the table and holds the piece of fabric you are working on. This functions the same as a sewing bird. The screw attaches it to the table as shown in the photos. The pivoting clamp swings down to hold the fabric. There are notches in the clamp to hold the fabric taut. The Height is 4 1/4" Width is 1 1/4" This is about the same size as a sewing bird. There is Black enamel paint on cast iron. With decorative design on the shaft, and on the clamp. In good working condition. Some wear on the black paint from light usage. If you collect antique sewing tools. This is a great example of the ingenuity of that era! Wonderful Civil War Victorian finely detailed sewing bird. I believe for hemming. It can clamp onto a chair or? by screwing tight. And. Birds mouth opens and clamps to hold fabric. Pin cushion in place. Date is on wing, so hard to see but it is there. Can be seen easier with a magnifying glass. Wonderful piece of sewing history and usable! Measures 4 3/4 inches high 3 3/4 inches from beak to tail. I believe the clamp is brass and metal.
