The Shuttle has always been stored in the box inside. The directions are readable with some difficulty- but the print is very small and some of the words are warn off. The second to the bottom line states: By taking pains in working your rug you will be surprised at the beautiful work you can produce. There is not date on the box or the shuttle. I somewhat know the history- my husband's aunt Helen lived on the farm since here marriage in 1932 until she died in 1989. She did a lot of hand crafts. I believe this was one of her tools for the crafts she enjoyed. Aunt Helen saved everything. Never had any children of her own so everything was kept very well. ANTIQUE/VINTAGE WOOD& METAL RUG-MAKING TOOL. It has a SLIDING NEEDLE with two parts that move independently. This is an INTERESTING and USEFUL DEVICE! It measures about 9 3/4 inches long to the tip of the needle when it's in it's shortest position. In the longest position. It extends to about 10 3/4 inches. The oval hole in the needle where the yarn or string will pass measures about 3/16 of an inch by 1/8 of an inch. I have seen similar devices referred to as'speed-shuttles' and'punch needles' i wish I had an instruction sheet. Please look at the pictures. I tried to take pics in different positions to show how it moves.

Antique Wood & Brass Sewing Tool Mechanical Rug Hooking Needle
Antique Wood& Brass Sewing Tool Rug Hooking Needle This wonderful old tool dates to the late 1800s. There is a pointed. Curved needle on one section end with a large hole in it; the other section has a metal clip-type piece with a curved end. A metal(iron, I think) eyelet is affixed near the top of the section with the needle. To work the tool, the wood section(e.g. half) with the needle slides up and down. When down, the other side’s clip springs up. The wood looks like maple(not certain) and all the fittings except the eyelet are brass. A small patch of a paper label is still present on one side. The other side has a light water mark. And some darker spots near the bottom, shown in the photo. There are a couple of very small, light/ shallow marks(not really scratches) in the wood. Antique Sewing Guide and Rug Needle, original boxes, Grandmother Clark
My mother had this old sewing set of 2 items. The antique or vintage rug needle comes in its cute red original box. The box measures about 8" by 3 1/2" I believe it is in working condition. Metal is tarnished. Box says Virginia Snow Studios. Elgin, ILL. Also included in this auction is the antique or vintage Grandmother Clark's sewing guide that seems to be in working order, too. It comes with its original instruction booklet rolled within its cute original box. It says it is a simple way for making rugs and other coverings for the home and is for use with wool or cotton yarns or rag rug strips. The box measures 10" by 1 1/4" by 1" I do not see a date on them but from the picture of the woman on the rug needle box I would guess around 1930, but possibly 1940's. If they go back to my Grandma's sewing days ... morecould be 1920s. From my smoke-free home.
