Description Wonderful antique Victorian carved wood/treen knitting sheath. Which would have been used tucked into the knitters belt or apron to allow a free hand and increase the speed of knitting. The sheath has simple turned handle with hole to the centre to hold a needle. AGE Knitting sheaths were used in Great Britain from as early as the 15th through to the end of the 19th century. Although this sheath would date to the middle of the 19th century, circa 1850. SIZE The sheath measures 19cm(7½" long and 1.5cm(½" in diameter. CONDITION The sheath is in a very condition for age. Although has been well used and as to be expected there are marks and scratches to the wood, with several cracks to the wood. Also there is a small paint spot to the top end. I do not know what the wood is, but it has a very fine grain, lustrous patina and the screw action is very smooth. It was almost certainly intended as a sewing etui, but in France these elaborate items were sometimes used to hold a rosary. It measures approximately 3 inches(8cm) high and is 1-3/4 inches(4cm) in diameter. Condition is excellent. Apart from a slight chip on the inside of the etui. Shipping: Well packed. antique(German? carved wood head of a woman. a folk art sewing tape measure. has a slight crack in the wood at the bottom. Cloth tape is missing the first part of the tape. some hand writing on front and bottom of carved head. Measurements: carved head is almost 3 inches in height. About 2 and 3/8 inches across. It was a busy last month but now I will finally be listing a lot(hundreds) of antique and vintage jewelry including part of a large antique coral and Chinese jewelry collection. This is a lovely lot of 3 lace making tools. There is a blade and two other tools. The carved bone tool is about 2 3/4" inches long and the wood one is about 4 3/8" inches long. They are in overall good condition. The end of the wood awl is not as sharp as originally. The bone and the blade are undamaged. NO RESERVE!
